It's funny, but Load is my favorite 'Tallica record behind Master of Puppets. Every single song on it is a super solid track. Sure it's a complete departure from the 80s thrash band we all loved first, but it's undeniable that the songwriting here is top notch. If every radio rock song sounded like the stuff off of Load then we'd live in a better world.
man i have been recently paying more attention to the less listened to albums by metallica (such as reload, load, st anger...so on) and i really like load. it has a funky led zeppelin type of style. re load wasnt as good, and i dont like st anger. but this album really shows how underated it is
@ManOwarIdk Yeah, this has that spirit to it like ol' metallica. I love Death Mag stuff nontheless, but I felt it was too focused on pleasing haters who were once fans. But those peeps need their classic metallica fix, so I won't give them any hell. But the Load albums were chocked full of feel good hard rock n metal elements. Anyone who hates on that can go to hell.
i enjoy every single Metallica album, and for people who say this isn't metal, actually this is metal but just because it isn't fast doesn't mean its not metal

Can you really blame people for hating Load?- Alot of the songs on this album kind of suck. The people that grew up with the first 5 Metallica albums were not expecting this from them.
@metallicarulz12345 Yeah I do. I love the first 5 metallica albums. Most of load sucks I like 4 songs on load, the rest I can do with out.. Reload is good. St.anger is just fucking awful. And Death Magnetic is great, possible better than the black album.

Metallica is by no means the ONLY amazing heavy metal band out there. But I'm going to have to say that they are my favorite band because they are so fascinating and interesting. They keep you on your toes with every album. They kicked ass in the 80s, they kicked ass in the 90s, they kicked ass in this decade, and I am fully confident that they shall continue to kick ass until the end of time, where ever they may roam as artists and musicians.

@garranto its heavy for most bands... just not heavy for metallica. Lyrics are not bad and its not like they lost talent when the album came out its just so... 'commercial' not that i expect every album from a great band to be completely underground. For the record i listened to the album through at least 15 or 20 times in any setting you can think of and enjoyed it 'okay' but i completely lost appeal to it after a few weeks and havent gotten it back since.

Granted, it's not as easy to listen to as the others, but think of all the shit they were going through, both as a band and personally. It was bound to come out in their music. Also, why would we want to have them write and play the same old songs? Give this album another listen. Pay attention to lyrics, please get past no guitar solos and you will see that it is heavy in content as well as metal. Peace.

And as far as their "feelings" or "what they were going through" should really have nothing to do with their music. And i agree with you in that Death Magnetic is awesome! i like suicide and redemption and lvoe instrumentals, my favorites on that album are broken, beaten, scarred and the judas kiss.

Well, I agree, if a band changes too much, it obviously is going to lose popularity with old fans. The thing is that an open minded fan (or person) will see that it takes a true master to change your art according to how you change. If an artist doesn't change his music, he makes the same over again, his music is dead. Metallica is alive, and with every disc they create a new unique sound, and for that they are great. People don't have to like it, but it shows how great Metallica is.

Because you are only 20 that you are unable to contextualize Metallica in a way that heavy metal fans of the 1980s would be able to. Metallica was quite different than most metal in the 80s, and it was called "speed metal" and "thrash metal" at the time. Unlike older fans, you have the position of being able to hear it all at once rather than being shocked by the change in style (even lettering on album covers) on Load. I am not cutting your taste, but you can't understand it this way.
@mankei13 Furthermore, after Lars Ulrich promised in the 1980s that they would never make a video for MTV, they did so with Load. This was perceived as a move to the mainstream by many fans. Being 20 years old, I can see how you would not be able to see that in the same light. With radio, what about "Mandatory Metallica" segments like "Get the Led Out" sections for Zeppelin? They have been in the mainstream since 1991. Why is it important to deny mainstream status if you like the music?

@MeBTroll I for one believe that Lars is more known for his persona than for his drumming skills, but i can tell you for sure if he is behind the drums. He has a certain distinctive manner when he plays that is his trademark. No one sounds like him. And he has lost his place in nr. 1 on my top list for great drummers a long time ago, for what it's worth. But Lars is Lars. It's the same as saying that the Sun looks yellow. and sometimes it's "dun...tsh...dundun...tsh..." ;)

And i agree with you in that Death Magnetic is awesome! i like suicide and redemption and lvoe instrumentals, my favorites on that album are broken, beaten, scarred and the judas kiss.

Well, I agree, if a band changes too much, it obviously is going to lose popularity with old fans. The thing is that an open minded fan (or person) will see that it takes a true master to change your art according to how you change. If an artist doesn't change his music, he makes the same over again, his music is dead. Metallica is alive, and with every disc they create a new unique sound, and for that they are great. People don't have to like it, but it shows how great Metallica is.

Its hard to even get the new album to play on the radio Yea exactly! i can't even say my own opinion on what youve said coz you explained what i would say anyway! He was referring to bands that turn to pop just to keep making money and "please the crowd." Metallica writes what THEY want, not just what the audience wants. Because you are only 20 that you are unable to contextualize Metallica in a way that heavy metal fans of the 1980s would be able to. Metallica was quite different than most metal in the 80s, and it was called "speed metal" and "thrash metal" at the time. Unlike older fans, you have the position of being able to hear it all at once rather than being shocked by the change in style (even lettering on album covers) on Load. I am not cutting your taste, but you can't understand it this way.

@mankei13 Furthermore, after Lars Ulrich promised in the 1980s that they would never make a video for MTV, they did so with Load. This was perceived as a move to the mainstream by many fans. Being 20 years old, I can see how you would not be able to see that in the same light. With radio, what about "Mandatory Metallica" segments like "Get the Led Out" sections for Zeppelin? They have been in the mainstream since 1991. Why is it important to deny mainstream status if you like the music?

@MeBTroll I for one believe that Lars is more known for his persona than for his drumming skills, but i can tell you for sure if he is behind the drums. He has a certain distinctive manner when he plays that is his trademark. No one sounds like him. And he has lost his place in nr. 1 on my top list for great drummers a long time ago, for what it's worth. But Lars is Lars. It's the same as saying that the Sun looks yellow. and sometimes it's "dun...tsh...dundun...tsh..." ;)

A band that is marketable through several generations. Some will argue they gave up their roots in doing so. Meh, just enjoy it. A very nice break down of Metallica over the years.
