My HP Touchpad, bought at the firesale, also has the same thing..been wondering what it is...will share with you my thoughts...think other touchpads have it too..
Yeah, HP had originally planned to launch 3g and 4G variants for AT&T, and this would be where the SIM would go, if it had been functional. Nothing new. If you looked at video reviews during your quest to obtain one of these (Like I did, ;)), you'd see that a few of those reviewers discovered this as well.

I didn't even notice that slot until now. At first I thought it was just a cover like others have said, but I kept trying to push it with my nails and it finally opened. I think fataldesain is right, it's probably just something a HP tech would use to find out the serial and part number.
mine just has a plastic piece that covers the hole. They made a 4g model but it never made it to the sales floor. They may be selling the ones they made as normal touchpads.
mine has all of this aswell, they all have a sim slot but they are covered over with plastic so you cannot access them and also mine has the same thing in get info. all touchpads have this, someone will find a way to open it tho oneday

it's not a sim card slot. it's simply the serial number information.
system info has "carrier" listed because webos is not just for the touchpad, it's also for the palm pre's and other webos phones.
hp also had slated a version of the touchpad that would come out later in the year that was 3g or 4g, but, obviously we know now that's not happening.
i WISH the serial number "slot" could take an sd card :( there's no reason they couldn't have)
