This so beautiful. It's interesting that it's not really a "hula" song--doesn't have the traditional progressions and cadences, but it fits so well with the graceful, sweet nature of the dance. That tone quality and the tastefulness of his ornamentation is so special. Jake is really a genius, and is well-respected by musicians of all types here on the islands.
Gorgeous music, befitting of such a high caliber film. Nice to see the mining industries' plight from a Japanese perspective. Do wish 'films' were just classified as 'films', not the dominant Western/English-speaking versus the 'Foreign'. Then more people would see great art from all over the world. End of rant-BTW Toyo Etsu (Etsushi Toyokawa) is in this! one of my faves
For the past two hours I've been saying "It's two am... you have school in a few hours... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN THIS EARGASMISTIC MUSIC OFF!" but I just can't do it.
@202mahina LOL No. Unfortunately I'm not. I always wanted to go to Hawaiian. I want to learn hawaiian culture, the language, lifestyle & let a hawaiian demonstrate hula to me. What part of Hawaii are you from?
I have the DVD, its in Japanese with English subtitles available. It's on Netflix as "Hula Girls". The next time you fly to Japan on All Nippon Air ANA, it should still be one of the in-flight movies. Mahalo.
Yes you can watch it on dailymotion(dot)com! I just watched it and that's why I am now watching this video! lol It was an awesome movie! Cried like 3 or 4 times tho. hehe :]
Beautiful, Jake!!! I forward this to all my friends and got some really great comments!!! I met your mom, Carol on Friday, she is a really fun person, even got to dance with her!!! hahaha
This movie was alright. Not my favourite. But I remember when Jake Shimabukuro visited my elementary school. Way back when. And all my friends and I made fun of our music teacher 'cuz she had on a low cut shirt.
This is a movie based on a true story in 1960s to revive an old coal town by founding a spa resort. Although the town had nothing to do with Hawaii and nothing to attract tourist, towns name resembles to Hawaii and it is warm like Hawaii in the spa, which, of course, no one believed enough. So, some people tried to introduce Hula dance show as a highlight of the spa.
They invited a dance teacher from Tokyo. But, parents strongly opposed their daughters to dance barely-clothed. As the girls made efforts trying to be a good Hula dancer day after day, parents gradually understand and support them. In 1960s, most Japanese cant afford to visit Hawaii. They enjoyed the spa resort as an easy substitute, well knowing the difference from the real Hawaii.
This is good video even if it misses the spirituality of Hula.. and being a buddist culture.. you should not have missed that connection to the land that is basic for good hula.. root yourself and live forever..
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If everyone in the world practiced true buddhism, there would be no progress, scientific discoveries or advancement. Everyone would be happy with the status quo. Find another religion that makes sense.
"everyone would be happy" certainly nonsensical, everyone should live in misery and strife for "advancement" that never actually yields the happiness it promises. Surely the same route is advancement despite lack of change. The true advancement would be actually reaching happiness and not making more mindless creations to distract from our misery. I'm atheist but I do hope you note the contradiction in your thought process.
please try to type in the number without the apostrophes. It's the ASIN number, which is unique for the item, no matter what country. I just tried it for (Amazon-)US, JP and germany and it works fine...
he must have been bored out of his brain playing this.. hes a genius.. dont get me wrong that was nice- but i coulda played it and that dont mean much at all
i play ukulele and guitar and a plethora of other instruments. ukulele, while simple, is actually quite challenging. i think you may in the intermediate stages of learning musical performance as true expression and maximization of an instrument goes far beyond the number of strings and distance of scales. you should review some of jake and ohta san's works as well as J. Heifetz who also plays a small 4 string instrument -_-
Distance doesn't mean much, you don't seem to realize the ukulele has re-entrant tuning meaning unlike a guitar where you can simply go to the lowest string and expect a lower sound you have to be mindful that the lowest string is a major second below the top string. I play ukulele, guitar, bass, violin, flute, harmonica, piano and a few others and am shocked at how people equate number of strings to simplicity. Try playing an Erhu. only two strings and realize how wrong you are.

I'm a hula dancer also-taught hula in Kalispell, Montana.
Since my surgery on my knee I hardly can't do the steps-this movie brings back memories.
Is there a soundtrack I can purchase? I would love to have the sound track.
Excellent movie I reccomend people to watch even though you are a dancer or not.
