  • WOOOOO HAHA OOHHH MMYYY GODDD ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!#$ DOUBLE RAINBOWWWWW

  • Reminds me of Doc Brown.

  • would I see 2 different rainbows if I alternately closed one eye?

  • @mdinka -- almost. Both eyes detect distinct sets of photons. They were reflected and refracted from roughtly the same set of water droplets with slightly different angles. So your left and right eye see slightly different rainbows, but these differences in perspective are minuscule.

Friends of yours a few miles to your side might not see a rainbow at all, because the light from the droplets doesn't get reflected back to them. Or, they look at rainbows from other patches at the horizon.

  • cool

  • @coolvideo28 -- judging from your comments to this video you've made over the recent two years, you sound like a broken record, so it seems that it is you who is empty inside.

The beauty of science is that we don't have to believe »men« (least of all those with funny hats). Like Steven Weinberg said:

»One of the great achievements of science has been, if not to make it impossible for intelligent people to be religious, then at least to make it possible for them not to be religious.«

  • Science - Study of God's Creation

  • Quod erat demonstrandum.

The electronics that connect you to the net, with which you're reading this very comment, coolvideo28 -- those electronics were invented, understood, researched and produced by more atheitsts than you think. There is no Christian brand of science, no Jewish one, no Muslim one, no Hindu science.

Science is a way to reject false hypothesis -- like for example the stories about the desert gods: no miracles, no Hebrew slaves, no exodus, no sun that stood still etc.

  • @virumoz You wont know the the truth at all until you study God's living word the KJV Bible, until then you will remain lost believing what men tell you who are wrong all the time.

  • @coolvideo28 -- you're aware that the adoration for the KJV version is just amongst English-speaking believers? It's no living word by any stretch of the imagination. It's one of hundreds of imperfect translations from biased interpolations and interpretations from incomplete and arbitrarily selected source pieces of scripture, the authors of most of it remain unknown.

Compare this with the living and applied body of work that is published scientific literature.

  • @virumoz Wrong the KJV Bible is the only real translation of Gods word the Bible word for word aka textus receptus. People read it all over the world it is translated in tons of languages you dont know what your talking about so you spout nonsense as If you do. The Bible is your instructions on life everyones and so much more ignore it and you will spend eternity in hell.

  • Believe what you want, coolvideo28.

  • @virumoz Yes I will believe the truth

  • @coolvideo28 Physiology Study of insane people...

If there's a god why he didn't ever shown up to us? I want to see him....

People always created them gods, even from beginning of times, go get your self something else to believe on, start to believe in yourself and your capacities and you'll get a better person.

If there is a god why did he kill your parents, grandpas, etc..

Enjoy life till you die, i not saying: get some drinks and drugs and sex... you know... get better

  • @tsunamyboy69 God Created you knowing he exists your not fooling anyone I will pray you will step out of denial and into true feedom wich can only be achieved through Jesus Christ forgiving your sins

  • @coolvideo28 yeh you are all skilled and stuff and you know that god exists because you already saw him.

Religion is the opposite of logic, it always would be...

You know what happens when you die? Nothing! and if it happens anything who cares if you aren't you anymore, you lost everything that you learned, you lost who you are. And don't say that isn't true, if it is tell me why people with stroke lost them memories.

  • @tsunamyboy69 You will give your life to Jesus Christ and spend eternity in paradise in heaven or you will do anything else and end up in hell in tourture for eternity the choice is all yours. God made/Created everyone knowing he exists though many like you fight to stay in denial everyday and Fail its sad.

  • @coolvideo28 who cares about that? You didn't answer me:

-Tell me why people with stroke lost them memories.

If the memories are save in your body if is there's a soul who cares about that if you lost your memories and what you are?

I guess you are more intelligent that that, don't you? You believe in god because other people make you believe on that... Don't come with bible and shit, if there were anything he was a scammer that trolled people saying that he was god... come on

  • @tsunamyboy69 You should care about that its the most important dicision you will ever make you decide were you will spend eternity and as of now you have choosen hell. If somthing that important you say "who cares about that?" then we really have nothing else to talk about its like saying who cares about that lets talk about a butterfly when we are in a car about to fall off a cliff. No thanks.

  • @coolvideo28 so why didn't you answer me about what i was asking for... did you quit already?

Take a look on what you are saying, it doesn't have any sense. Are you losing arguments or you are just weak on conversation with an "almost atheist"... yeh... me!

Prove your sentences with reality common sense, and i'll give you credit to that.

But just don't say: it's on bible and bible is cool and you should read it cuz you are a noob

  • @tsunamyboy69 re read last comment

  • I do understand that inside the cone we have the white light as all the colors are mixed together. Also I do understand that on the far edge we have only red because no other colors can have a such high degree.

For some reasons(I may missed some lectures), I couldn't understand why in the very inside edge of the cone we have only blue light. Don't we have also red and green (and therefore we will have white?) Thanks in advance for lighting me up.

  • @cacarnitzu -- that's actually a great question. My guess would be that the white light inside the cone is diffuse and weakened by not being close to the Brewster angle, whereas the monochromatic reflections/refractions at the edge are more directed and therefore too intense to be washed out by the white light. But I can't quantify my gut feeling. I'd love to hear Walter Lewin’s take on this!

  • this is the !!LAST!! video i would EVER expect to fall victim to bullshit comments..THANK YOU MIT.

  • @vPanya -- same thing I thought. Lewin is excellent in this lecture! I only wish the quality was better and the dark bits had more contrast.

  • HOW THE FUCK DID HE DRAW A DOTTED LINE SO QUICKLY

  • Comment removed

  • @fealmor I've actually been practicing on the chalkboards at school; if you get the pressure JUST right, it's easy to do. Forget sports cars and money, girls love a guy who can do the dotted-line chalk thing.

  • @fealmor The attack angle of the chalk. If you hold the extremity down, you draw a continuous line. If you change the angle, (chalk perpendicular or the extremity is held up), then the line is dotted. Same like moving a heavy refrigerator, if you push it from below, it goes smoothly. If you push it from the top, then it 'jumps'.

  • You might need lead lined underwear and double polarized lens with all the rays he beams at the class during demonstrations. I really like his lectures.

  • I remember this guy. How could we not remember him as he says "What's wrong with you ?". 44:30 or 45:46

  • @Rainbow28IsADouche

i laughed so much when i saw your name hahahaha! So ironic! But I digress

can't you recognize a troll when you see one?

  • @coolvideo28 The sad part is, you will never be convinced by anyone but yourself...what's even sadder is the fact that I'm e-arguing with what appears to be the greatest simpleton in youtube's short history. If your "god" really wants you to solidify your faith, read a book other than the bible or those by christian authors. I've argued evolution against many a christian, and they fail everytime...even the most ardent christian can't defend their beliefs against my arguments...not even you.

  • @Rainbow28IsADouche HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA evolution is a fairytale the fossil record proved that years ago you are funny though you like most evolutionists get into a debate then the Creationist tears your arguments apart and you come back w evolution nonsense then the Creationst teears them apart with comon sense then you guys see that the Creationst is right so you swear atack them call them names then think you won the argument its hilarious. Thanks for the laugh

  • @coolvideo28 You're boring...I was just at a grave site and saw loads of tombstones and I thought, there are so many people here with so many different beliefs...rotting in the ground. Your mind is a rotten corpse too I might add.

  • @coolvideo28

Dude. GO to school. Get an education you dipshit. People like you make me ill about the state of learning in our society.

Hmm... mathematics and modern scientific theory that has yielded everything from vaccines to nuclear power, OR millennium old fairy tales used to explain what at that time was inexplicable in naturalistic terms.

    Gee, tough choice.

You didn't understand a word of that, I know.

  • @supowit You believe in God thats why it makes you guys so angry your purposfuly trying to stay in denail but it never works it never will. That emptyness inside will always remain until you make Jesus Christ your Lord and savior. If you want to learn the Truth read the Bible and trust God. Or you can keep believing men that are proven wrong every day

  • @coolvideo28 cunt.

  • This was absolutely fascinating for me! I think this professor is wonderful even though his daughter may not think he has a Heiligenschein about him. I love that I can sit in on these lectures--now in my older age of course; after I took education for granted in my younger years. My advice to the young... GET SMART!

  • I like the theory I disagree with the exact numbers since rain drops are not perfect spheres due to friction with the air so the exact angles are distorted :) The next time I have my transit out in the rain I will check the angles to see if we are close :)

  • "the radiation you would expect from a saint"

    lolol

  • Thank you so much for sharing these lectures, truly a fascinating subject... I regret greatly not going to a real college like MIT to listen to the knowledge of minds like these...

  • Very cool! Great questions and metaphores.

  • Phenomena like rainbows, sundogs, Heiligenschein, diffraction, but also the tides or transparency to light or relativistic effects; they all can be roughly explained to a plausible degree with a short sentence or two. But the more you look into them, the more intricate, revealing, encompassing and beautiful their explanations get. Love this stuff!

  • yep thats because God created rainbows like everything else thats why everything is ao amazing

  • Please be precise, coolvideo28. According to the GodChecker (dot com) database, there are 95 rain gods, 90 thunder gods, 211 sea gods and 168 sky gods, overlaps nonwithstanding.

Exactly which subgroup of them do you deem responsible for rainbows?

  • coolvideo28, do you believe in the same Abrahamic Yahweh as your parents do? Do you think this is a coincidence? If Yahweh loves me very much as you assert, how can he in his right mind punish me ad infinitum for a finite sin (not believing in the Holy Ghost)?

While we have a sound evidence-based model for how rainbows form, you stated without evidence that God did it. And what you assert without evidence, I can dismiss without evidence. Would you agree?

So many more questions on my mind...

  • coolvideo28: How is "I know for a fact The God of the Bible is the truth the only real God" anything other than anecdotal? How could this ever be more valid than the heartfelt credo of a Muslim, a Buddhist, a Bahai or a Mormon?

Compare and contrast to Prof Lewin in the video. He won't make his students believe him because he "knows for a fact" that the aperture of any rainbow be 42°; he shows by means of deduction and experiment that Snell's law can be trusted.

  • Science is not my religion, coolvideo28. It's a tool with which smarter people than you and me were able to construct computers, high-speed data connections, GPS satellites and modern medicine.

The beauty of the scientific method: it works the same for Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Atheist scientists. Propose hypotheses and anticipate flaws; test both; if verified, test current models and theories with it; if falsified -- dismiss them.

Not something you can do with deities, can you?

  • Why dont you mesage me with further questions because Iam going to need to place multiple comments to answere your questions plus I could answere them much better much more in detail if I had the room

  • I'd like to keep this public, so I don't think there's a need for messages. "He came and died for your sins"? No evidence for it, many contradictions against. What has an deity resurrecting itself have to do with me being punished *forever*?

And because these are comments on a video about physics, I'd just like to mention the laws of diffraction and reflection I'm sure you'll claim to be made by Yahweh; but why not by Allah, Thor or Wodan? Why have faith in a cult with such a flawed Genesis?

  • I'm searching for truth. I just prefer to find truth via science rather than have it asserted via revelation.

Again: the rainbow is an observable phenomenon; it can be repeated in experiments and verified to great precision. Those thousands (really?!) of people who saw a Rabbi named Yeshua are by no means proof for anything ascribed to him (or Mithras? or Dynonysos?) by the Gospels, the Apocrypha or the Qur'an. That's a fact, coolvideo28. Sorry.

  • Whoa, coolvideo28. Now you're claiming that evolution "is not even a hypothesis"? Instant disqualification. Evolution (change over time) is a fact, evidenced by the fossil record and DNA/RNA sequencing. Descent with modification is the overarching theory with many models, e.g. punctuated equilibrium. It's not that hard.

    :-)

Compare this with your anecdotal claims about your special brand of Christianity, one denomination amongst thousands. Just look up "List of Christian denominations".

    :-(

  • Read up about the "foot print" on the talkorigins (dot org) website and go to any decent museum. I'm not here to educate you, but I'm not angry. Good thing for us Europeans that the U.S. economy and research are stifled by people like, well, you. No offence.

Reading our little dialoge again, at least we can agree about one thing, coolvideo28:

    Rainbows are beautiful.

  • coolvideo28: When you write "sorry I already know the truth" -- do you really mean it? It sounds arrogant, compared to the skeptical and critical, self-validating and -falsifying process of science.

I'm sure that I know almost nothing, but with what I know (languages, Unix and its tools), I can build stuff that works, and I've been getting better at it year after year, decade after decade.

Around 1900, some thought we knew everything: "Close the patent offices". Good thing they didn't.

  • @coolvideo28 It's probably your uncle's footprint you neolithic grunt. The same bible you say encourages man's mental faculties to engage in reason to fortify faith also states the foolishness of a man who utilizes reason. Evolution doesn't require faith, take a course in bio-chemistry, we are bags of chemicals. Believe what you want, but don't make assertions for which you have no evolved appendages to stand on.

  • Whenever I see a rainbow, I will think of how awesome this video is. And butt sex. I will think about butt sex.

  • Loved to get to see the rainbow!

  • had a quiz on it

  • so dont watch ;) obviously not meant for you

  • Rammstein ROX!

  • I wish I went to MIT :(

I saw this guy on that PBS Elegant Universe Movie talking about String (M) Theory

  • What do we call the first point your eyes are drawn in a painting even if its not the center of the painting?

  • Focal point or center of interest, I think.

    Byw why?

  • I knew 3.

    This is very interesting!

  • ty for the video course.

  • really cool..

  • Thank you |MIT| Keep up the good work pliiiz.

  • Neat stuff. Thanks.
