@stayfrostywilly you are part of the new problem with DCI. There was no input from former members of corps. There was no democratically held election. I'm not asking that there should have been a vote that included my hanging Chad. I searched andsearched for tv coverage of the bands to see if there were any corps at the show....there weren't. The only drum corps show I saw was from the scouts. In deference to the crown I will not make disparaging comments about them...I just never liked t

we did argue ,we fought when bflat 3 valve horns were rammed down our throats .we were told they were necessary because they'd be easier so you lazier less talented "musicians " wouldn't have to learn new fingerings,we argued when we heard we needed sound amplification in the pits.the theory? smaller corps could use fewer instruments it would be cheaper to function, then electronic keyboards and vocals now .they've even talked about saxs "we need them" and it will happen
PT4 at melloman, one more thing, the difference between corps now and then, we had some God Damn respect for those who came before us. If it wasn't for us old farts, there would be no new farts. pt3 to The melloMan, Not sure if you've marched. Hope not given your attitude, cause that means the activity has really tanked. This great drill you speak of? Innovated by us. Better musicallity? Yeah, more options not using a G horn. Or should I say bugle, since trumpets aren't. Watch the old vids or listen to recordings from 80s,'90s, even early 2000's. Note the crowds screamin so loud you can't hear the corps. Not just at the end. Pretty music? listen to orchestra All bout entertainment.
DCI has always been an "elite" organization. Not slammin current members at all, but the activity. 1) getting rid of 2 valve G bugles. A trumpet and a Tuba are just that, not bugles. Hence "bugle" corps. 2) it's all about the entertainment. What gets 'em on thier feet. 3)synthesizers are not drums or bugles.4)We had complete isolation from the world. I hesitated to get in on this, but here goes. (and probably in 2 parts) I marched Star of Indiana '89/'90. I'm sure the '70s early '80s guys said the same things about us. There is great love for the activity from us "old farts". You new guys cherish every second of this, you'll treasure the exp for a lifetime. The concern is DCI has become too commercial. New guys only know it for what it is now, and great for them. OK, 2 more posts after this, please follow........
Fuck you asshole. You are tearing the activity apart just because you cant get over your "good ol days." I seriously cant stress this enough... FUCK YOU.
You obviously have some GREAT reception here, are ya proud? Wanna cookie?
Hypocrite. You talk about ignorance by DCI. How dare you. Neither of your videos speak truth.
Get your stuff straight. If you love this activity, then you would continue to embrace it and see the positives.
However if your heart has turned away from here, then I an genuinely sorry that you will be missing something as great an opportunity as Drum Corps can give these days. Truly very sorry for you.
I can recall marching in a small Illinois corps back in the 70's and everyone who was decent ended up quitting and joining Phantom, The Cavies, The Guardsmen, Madison, a few went to the Kilties and so on. We could never keep the really good talent so the corps folded it up in 80 and that was that. I often heard comments about DCI destroying the small corps and I think it happened, at least in Illinois. Sure, the DCI corps today are far superior than 40 years ago, but small corps were fun.
Can't we all just be happy that music itself hasn't died in society? I mean it's ridiculous that people don't appreciate the arts anymore. I'm just glad music is still alive despite all this.
I'm pretty sure the exact same thing happened in the past, there was this corps in 93 that nobody liked becuase they were so different, but 20 years later that show is still remembered, this little one called Star of Indiana. We'll see what is said in a decade about George Hopkins and other innovators. If you're a real fan, the direction the activity is going shouldn't effect your look on it if you really love it. And for the record, I'm pretty sure financial is the reason for most folds.
You got that right!!! Thanks George Hopkins, for ruining Drum & BUGLE Corps!!! Singing, props, amplifiers, and M&M that is complicated but boring. Bands used to want to be like us...now Corps have become bands!
part 2- the solos were basicly lets see which trumpet can play the highest note possible, while now we actually have musicality, the color guard's better than ever the percussion's better than ever and the show design's are better than ever! im not going to call them "old fucks" because that would be ignorant im just telling them to stop saying "well back in the day we used to ...... better than they do now"
JESUS CHRIST! all these people are saying "remember the good old days?" there were no fuckin good old days! you people make me sooo pissed! These corps are better then they've ever been, i mean the overall performance of the show is far beyond what they used to be. Sure I get chills watching 1979 Troopers or 1985 Scouts but visualy they looked like shit and the formations moved soo slow. There were no such thing as visual like these corps now in days dance while they play which is hard as hell!
as a former member let me say this, when corps fold its usually a finacial thing. What do you suggest we could have done when [example] the 27th Lancers folded? As for drum corps current direction, as long as drum corps does what it does i'll be there yelling & cheering. i dont have a problem with the activity evolving. BUT we have lost a large number of corps due to another situation, 911. how we can get back the canadian corps?

I can imagine sometime in the future when some liberal will whine, "Why can't flutes be part of the activity? It's not right to discriminate." :P Soon the activity will be just college band in the summer, LMFAO :D
I marched for 11 years starting back in the 80s, so I'm an old fart. I think I'm reasonable and I can see both perspectives of tradition and change. I'm sure there was a crowd who criticized the switch from valve-rotar (which I started on :P) to 2 valve upright, just the way I criticized going from 2 to 3 valves, and G to Bb. However, I think the real argument is that the activity is evolving into a different species and soon won't or shouldn't be called drum & bugle corps anymore.
this is absolutely right - drum corps used to be an activity for kids who wanted to work together and have fun - now it is a few groups of very musically talented kids getting together for a few weeks out of the year . Tryouts , practice and learning drills and music by mail ? C'mon - that is not drum corps - there were hundreds of drum corps in the US , now there are probably less than 100 total -
@cwk1417 yes but ON TOUR - that is June July and August . It is a big commitment (and no one is doubting that ) as it always was BUT I am talking about old school drum corps al all levels (that DO NOT tour) and not necessarily DCI corps. It was an activity that involved you across the whole year - you went to school or hung out with most of these kids in YOUR TOWN - it did not involve money or talented musicians
Oh! Too funny! I especially like the woman who keeps changing her mind every time she gets "shot." Thanks for posting this! My eyes are watering I'm laughing so hard!
Too bad synthesizers make the show better! They still put on an amazing show and they still march and they still play. Synthesizers just add what cant be done through brass or percussion.
imo corps that have to resort to electronice and props for extra GE are doing so to hide musical inadequencies
drum corps should be about a horn line, percussion line and colour guard
you might call us old fucks, but we did drum corps the way it should be done and no corps using these gimmicks could even think aboiut competing with corps from 25-30 years ago
drum corps is tried and tested, it doent need evolving, it was perfection the way it was
It is NOT "drum & bugle corps" anymore and THAT's what us "old fucks" are annoyed with. We've been bitching for like 10 years now and DCI just goes merrily on. BTW...it is not us "old fucks" who even GET to vote, it's the directors of the top 12 WHO admittedly want to turn "drum & bugle corps" into marching band......or something else including stage electronics. So, it's not by "choice" that we've not been "part of the voting",etc.
This video is a waste of your time...don't bother with it. The activity is better now than it has ever been. The old days were great dont get me wrong, but it is wonderful to see these new shows and ideas. I can close my eyes and tell the difference between drum corps still. Traditions should be about excellence and dedication to the growth of young people, not playing malaguena every year!! Drum corps are dying because they can't keep up with the demands of the activity and or the economy.
For anyone considering DCI corporate marching band, please note the "character" demonstrated in most of the pro-DCI 'evolution' comments. You won't see such in DCI's marketing & promotions. However, the quality, or lack thereof, demonstrated is far more indicative of the reality. Let the buyer beware!
Close your eyes at a DCI show and see if you can tell the difference between one corps and another. Can't be done. I DID march DCI for 4 years. 3 with SCV. It ISN'T the same. Musically, many of these kids could not pull off some of the great stuff that we did back then. It's obvious because not one corps has brought back things from the past. Sure, they play them in the lot or for encores, but the quality of the music is not the same. I hear intonation issues and they're STANDING STILL!
dude wtf? the shows are 10x more complex and creative than they use to be in the 90s and back.. And the 2 highest scoring shows were in 02 and 05. and DCI is dying?? they've gotten SO Much better than they used to be. DCI WILL NEVER DIE! ITS FAGS LIKE YOU THAT ARE TRYING TO KILL IT! SO STFU AND GET A LIFE!! Holy Name Cadets bound!!
I remember when my high school band first changed to free form drill from military in 1981. We went to a competition, lit the house up, and made scores of I,I,III,with a GE rating of superior. Strange, huh? Then we heard the judges tape. The judge that gave us a III rating kept yelling, "Where are the lines? STRAIGHT LINES, PLEASE! How do you march without straight lines?" The only thing constant is change,
Oh Come On!!! Corps like Holy Named Cadets and Cavaliers has been evolving since 1930. Blue devils for over 50 years, SCV over 40, Phantom over 25. Star of Indiana did it to them selves but they were the one who came out the famous indoor marching arts. The show 'Blast' was organized by them for heaven sakes!!
Point well made, if not done in a completely ridiculous manner. Let's face it: When DCI allowed corps to stop using G bugles, that sounded the death knell for DCI as we all knew it. While it's true Hopkins had nothing directly to do with the demise of any corps, what he has pushed, and been able to implement, has skewed a once level playing field. Not only has the activity alienated the fan base, but it has alienated the kids. The rules have changed, but who do they favor now? Not the kids!
This isn't even accurate. It says Star of Indiana "Died" - But they are just reincarnated as the Blue Stars. If you're going to make a ridiculous video, at least make it correct.
you know,as a current marching member i have to say that THIS is the reason why drum corps is "dying," as you so boldy put it. all of you old fucks don't support the activity just because it is going a different direction. if you didn't wanted change, then you should've said something. you have no right to criticize if you were not part of the voting. if you didn't want electronics, it was YOU who should have said something. if you didn't want a corps to fold, YOU SHOULD'VE DONE SOMETHING!
I do support the activity. I donate to local corps. I buy tickets hoping that the shows will entertain, but they generally fail (with a few exceptions). I've said much in writing to corps, talking with friends who teach in the activity, etc. to express my concern that drum corps has lost touch with the general public (those people who used to attend shows in droves). The DCI intelligentsia turned its back on the fans years ago. They left me, not the other way around.
@stayfrostywilly as a former member let me say this, when corps fold its usually a finacial thing. What do you suggest we could have done when [example] the 27th Lancers folded? I stood with them @ Finals in 86 As for drum corps current direction, as long as drum corps does what it does i'll be there yelling & cheering. i dont have a problem with the activity evolving. BUT we have lost a large number of corps due to another situation, 911. how do we get all the corps from Canada Back ?????
Of course the author has created a piece here that's over the top to make his point, but he is right. As one comment indicated, Drum Corps was the USA's #2 participation "sport" behind bowling back in the late '60s / early '70s. There are hardly any drum corps left today. Attendance is way down. DCI Championships are no longer televised. I've tried hard to stay interested, but the shows are generally musical borefests, so I stopped attending this year ('09). Drum is devolving, not evolving.
dev⋅o⋅lu⋅tion - noun: the act or fact of devolving; passage onward from stage to stage.
'70s & '80s: thousands more corps members, 100s more corps, many more contests, higher attendance, finals TV, Now: declining audiences & participation, no television coverage, reduced relevance in our culture. A passage onward from stage to stage. My description is correct.
If drums & horns continue to "evolve" as you put it, Einstein, drum corps will "evolve" itself out of existence.
There used to be so many corps in New York State American Legion Championships, that there was Prelims in both senior and junior divisions.DCI and to a lessor extent DCA have killed, and prevented the formation of,more corps than can be counted. They have killed the activity.
this video is pretty fucked up i must say. hopkins didnt cause any corps fold. and the rules that hes requested havent put any limitations on any of the corps. if anything they have broadened the creative pallet 4 designers.
I find this site very sad. I was with a drum corp known as the Imperials from Pembroke, Ma (sadly disbanded) and I must say that begining a member was the best 7 years of my life. It was a lot of hard work but I would do it all again in a heart beat.
One thing that kind of made me go "...?" was when they mock Hopkins getting rid of drums, he was a percussion caption head to my previous knowledge,(Right?) the joke about him hating drums dosn't make sense
But I have noticed DCI's level changing. Some things are just becoming weird, the music is still hard, but now its being overrated, and the musicality seems to be dieing. I say the music is being over-rated, ex, look at Pratts solo book, before = All class B (two A solos) Now = All Class A
Actually there are very few actual drum and bugle corps. Blue Devils, Cadets, Cavies, all are just marching bands without wood winds. Loss of bugles marked the loss of music with passion. My day you marched because you had to, you were a slave to the passion. Today it is just another academic activity.
I agree with mlippincott6.I havent watched nationals for the last three years.Thank God for youtube fer the old time corps that are uploaded. How can we get DCI to get back to music you can whistle or hum on the way out of the stadium?
There used to be 20 drum corps in the Pacific NW....today there are barely 2. Kids used to be able to be involved just by showing up and getting involved. Today you have to be in a college music program and audition against folks from all over the country. Wow, if I were a kid today I never would be able to compete...I'd be "aced-out"....hah!
I agree with several comments here...The Cadets need to tone down the amplified voice and not bando DCI activity...Take Mr. Snopkins off the board of Directors and keep Drum Corps really creative.
I hope its not true but you can see signs of it every year. I cant believe my 2 old corps that I marched in got a mention(Florida Vanguard & Florida Wave). You did forget to mention 1 of my favorite corps - Norhtstar- they were awesome!
What do you know? have you marched corps? even open class is improving! yeah dci's changing, but who are you to say it's dying? talant levels are going up in almost evey corps each year, and more people are finding out about it.
you strike me as one of those people who can't let go of the past. man, you don't have to live in the past for it to remain there. let the new generation of dci come through. If music didn't evolve, there would only what? a-capella choir?
Oh sad but true. To all of you defenders of DCI, yes the performing level is incredible. But I was able to march in a national championship corps for eleven years, until I aged out. And ponder this, in 1965 according to Sports Illistrated, the second largest participant sport in the United States was Drum & Bugle Corps, only following bowling.
My parents met in Drum Corps, I've attended shows my entire life, I have marched..........DCI is alienating it's fan base. Visually it has never been better.... musically it has regressed. Try closing your eye's and listening to today's music then listen to what was happening in the 80's and 90's. DCI has a very obvious problem. Yes I want it to evolve and get better, but the reality is it hasn't.
Several comments were well stated and points well made regarding the evolution of drum corps. Yes, the activity has changed. For the better?
One of the "posters" referred to their participation in '79 & '80 as "old school." Another referred to the 1983 season as the "Golden Age" of drum corps. Let's face it: The year(s) that WE marched was/were the BEST!
Yes, I'm an "old fart." I marched pre-1969 for a dozen years, and I know where drum and bugle corps go to die: A "pit."
Great and right on target. Got to march in Anaheim Kingsmen Alumni Corps this past summer and SCV '79-'80 back in the day. The kids work hard, but bring us more excitement with the music. Bring back the old school!
People that talk about drum corps like this seriously can't handle the fact that it's evolving. To me, it's just like people who insist classic rock is better, when tons modern rock and metal musicians show so much more skill at what they do.
The Cadets, and some others, are taking the chance of trying something new, which just seems to be something people can't handle.
What ever loser put this in is totally f***ed in the head. DCI will get stronger every year and outlive you. As the saying goes what won't kill you will make you stronger. I've been watching DCI since the De la Salle Oaklands were around, 70's era.Does onyone remember them?
Drum Corps is not dead at all. And this is a shot at George Hopkins I know, but have you ever talked to the man?hes as nice as they come. and so what if hes changing drum crops thats why so many people love the cadets because they think outside of the box. your right the GARFIELD cadets are dead, the cadets are here to stay though. they are changing drum corps for the better, we are all sick of hearing the same old jazz shows every year and the cadets keep us guessing and asking for more.
...Seattle Imperials? they turned into the Seattle Thunder Birds, then into the Seattle Cascades, then into Cascades, they're a strong running machine
WTF is this? I expected to see a retrospective of corps from the past, not some stupid computer voiced ranting....hope someone kicks the crap out of you....based on this...they will...
This is making fun of The Cadets and George Hopkins, which is why its "shnopkins" since The cadets have changed alot in drum corps lately. It's just being sarcastic about George Hopkins and the way he is changing drum corps.
I was fortunate enough to have marched in the "heyday" of DCI, anmake the finals in what was, at the time, the BEST Drumline in the world,The NorthStar(Ma) "Chrome Wall". Its a crime to see how far the activity has fallen. Now, you even have to PAY to audition for a corpshis Note :1976 World Open.
110 Class "B" and All-Girl Corps scheduled on Friday.
106 Class "A" and Open Class on Saturday.
1986 DCE/World Open: 16 Open Class corps performed.
Those numbers may return when BOA and DCI merge. With DCI being the major league, BOA will be like triple A in baseball, and the combo of those two "leagues" should show big numbers like the old drum corps days of the seventies. (maybe use it as a selling point for the merger)
California gets Finals as a big thank-you for all the West Coast corps that helped build DCI, but then it's off to BandLand, probably for good. By the way, how long has BOA been headquartered at Indy?
Did you notice that there isn't even a headstone for North Star? Is that because no one cares to remember? Or, is it because there simply wasn't room for all those damn sixteenth notes? Did Vose really have to write down to that line or was the overall philosiphy simple and clean is better than good?
"Government-in-Exile", anyone? :-D RIP kschannen's "old-school" page! I'll bet somebody from DCI just got honked that the old-school stuff was getting more favourable attention than anything "modern". Gee . . . I wonder why that would be? :-)~
It especially breaks my heart to see what's become of Garfield --- I just finished watching the '77 "I Don't Know How to Love Him", which was controversial in its time but positively "tame" compared to what happened later.
Well, gotta go practice my ten-valve double-reed electric hookah (otherwise known as a Schnappophone) --- don't want to disappoint the "master" <=)~ . . .
It was great back in the old days, but things have evolved. These days, corps can do whatever they want (sing, dance, whatever!) And there's nothing you can do about it, so stop complaining! I don't think they'll ever add woodwinds because we all know that brass is what drum corp is all about. If you want to hear a saxophone, go to a jazz band concert, not a drum corp show.
hah, a little farfetched, but I found it funny. I wouldn't give Hopkins all the credit either, he is most definately not the only one pushing for electronics. Hopkins probably is the most vocal about his ideas though, which is why people tend to label him as the "amp" guy in drum corps.
Amusing, but drum corps isn't dying by any means. I love old school stuff too, but this new stuff is catching on pretty well. (xcept amps, i hate amps)
Tom Float was always trying to get electronics back in the mid-80s. He was at a contest at our high school and me and my buddies were absolutely horrified when he said that. But he was really into it, even then.
The face of DCI has definitely changed, but fear not my friends -- DCA lives on and is still about face-peeling sops, bowel-shuddering contras and barley-ass drumlines. I'm gonna be spending most of my season keeping an eye on Reading Buccs and Hawthorne Caballeros.
DCA is struggling some as well, maybe not Buccs but looks like a lot of corps are feeling a lot of pressure and some are breaking down. Sun, Sky, Gold, etc. Even Cabs don't have their usual strong turn out. I too worry about the future of corps...
How in the hell do you figure that drum corps is alive and well? There used to be 100+ Div3 Corps, now less than 30, Used to be 50+ Div2 corps, now there are 8. Most div1 corps are broke, from trying to sell out. Alive and well my ass, One year from a wheelchail, a few more from the grave.
Hiliariously bitter and on-target! (unfortunately)I think "finalofseven" is on the right track --- things started to get weird post-Star-of-Indiana, although I could push it a little further back and make the case that the "new" Cadets of the late 80s were "the beginning of the end". By the way, if you think "electric guitars" is far-fetched, BOA (then MBA) allowed electric basses as far back as '80 or so :-(.
Sylva-Webester High School in NC was using an electric bass in '78 and '79 under direction of Bob Buckner. This high school also won "MBA" championship in '79.
Hi, jadebrew! Now, *there's* a name I hadn't heard in a while, but I remember seeing them. I was at Whitewater in both '79 and '81, and I'm pretty sure I still have the newspaper-like program from '79; Sylva-Webster is in it, of course (as are *we*). I couldn't have told you where they were from, off the top of my head, but I remember they were quite good (aside from the electronic bass, which you could hardly hear, anyway). --- Steve, UHS Renegade Regiment, '77-'81 (2nd in "A" Division in '81)
Change for a purpose is one thing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The music back in the 1980's and 1970's was pretty damn difficult back then. There was no reason to push the change. What purpose does talking / narration serve anyways?
Ha it's funny cuz DCI isn't dying anytime soon

Things change. It's just the natural way of things. Nothing ever stays the same. That is all there is to it.
TheSammywammybar 11 months ago
I'm pretty sure the exact same thing happened in the past, there was this corps in 93 that nobody liked becuase they were so different, but 20 years later that show is still remembered, this little one called Star of Indiana. We'll see what is said in a decade about George Hopkins and other innovators. If you're a real fan, the direction the activity is going shouldn't effect your look on it if you really love it. And for the record, I'm pretty sure financial is the reason for most folds.
CanyonBassCaptain 1 year ago
You got that right!!! Thanks George Hopkins, for ruining Drum & BUGLE Corps!!! Singing, props, amplifiers, and M&M that is complicated but boring. Bands used to want to be like us...now Corps have become bands!

part 2- the solos were basicly lets see which trumpet can play the highest note possible, while now we actually have musicality, the color guard's better than ever the percussion's better than ever and the show design's are better than ever! im not going to call them "old fucks" because that would be ignorant im just telling them to stop saying "well back in the day we used to ...... better than they do now"
THEmelloMAN1229 1 year ago

It's not right to discriminate." :P Soon the activity will be just college band in the summer, LMFAO :D
gorwell97 1 year ago
I marched for 11 years starting back in the 80s, so I'm an old fart. I think I'm reasonable and I can see both perspectives of tradition and change. I'm sure there was a crowd who criticized the switch from valve-rotar (which I started on :P) to 2 valve upright, just the way I criticized going from 2 to 3 valves, and G to Bb. However, I think the real argument is that the activity is evolving into a different species and soon won't or shouldn't be called drum & bugle corps anymore.
gorwell97 1 year ago
this is absolutely right - drum corps used to be an activity for kids who wanted to work together and have fun - now it is a few groups of very musically talented kids getting together for a few weeks out of the year . Tryouts , practice and learning drills and music by mail ? C'mon - that is not drum corps - there were hundreds of drum corps in the US , now there are probably less than 100 total -
golfizfun 1 year ago
@golfizfun
getting together for a few weeks out of the year???
I don't think so...these kids go on tour for months at a time and don't get to see their families and loved ones for long periods of time.
cwk1417 1 year ago
@cwk1417 yes but ON TOUR - that is June July and August . It is a big commitment (and no one is doubting that ) as it always was BUT I am talking about old school drum corps al all levels (that DO NOT tour) and not necessarily DCI corps. It was an activity that involved you across the whole year - you went to school or hung out with most of these kids in YOUR TOWN - it did not involve money or talented musicians

Drum corps are dying because they can't keep up with the demands of the activity and or the economy.
spilldrill 1 year ago
For anyone considering DCI corporate marching band, please note the "character" demonstrated in most of the pro-DCI 'evolution' comments. You won't see such in DCI's marketing & promotions. However, the quality, or lack thereof, demonstrated is far more indicative of the reality. Let the buyer beware!
songspiritUSA 1 year ago
Close your eyes at a DCI show and see if you can tell the difference between one corps and another. Can't be done. I DID march DCI for 4 years. 3 with SCV. It ISN'T the same. Musically, many of these kids could not pull off some of the great stuff that we did back then. It's obvious because not one corps has brought back things from the past. Sure, they play them in the lot or for encores, but the quality of the music is not the same. I hear intonation issues and they're STANDING STILL!
scvanguard86 1 year ago
dude wtf? the shows are 10x more complex and creative than they use to be in the 90s and back.. And the 2 highest scoring shows were in 02 and 05. and DCI is dying?? they've gotten SO Much better than they used to be. DCI WILL NEVER DIE! ITS FAGS LIKE YOU THAT ARE TRYING TO KILL IT! How do you march without straight lines?" The only thing constant is change,
bhkidd 1 year ago
Declining audiences is mostly due to the country's arts and music programs deteriorating.
And how bout YOU go pay the membership dues to keep all these corps alive.
goldcrayon2 2 years ago
Oh Come On!!! Corps like Holy Named Cadets and Cavaliers has been evolving since 1930. Blue devils for over 50 years, SCV over 40, Phantom over 25. Star of Indiana did it to them selves but they were the one who came out the famous indoor marching arts. The show 'Blast' was organized by them for heaven sakes!!
tytzer93 2 years ago
Point well made, if not done in a completely ridiculous manner. Let's face it: When DCI allowed corps to stop using G bugles, that sounded the death knell for DCI as we all knew it. While it's true Hopkins had nothing directly to do with the demise of any corps, what he has pushed, and been able to implement, has skewed a once level playing field. Not only has the activity alienated the fan base, but it has alienated the kids. The rules have changed, but who do they favor now? Not the kids!

you know,as a current marching member i have to say that THIS is the reason why drum corps is "dying," as you so boldy put it. all of you old fucks don't support the activity just because it is going a different direction. if you didn't wanted change, then you should've said something. you have no right to criticize if you were not part of the voting. if you didn't want electronics, it was YOU who should have said something. if you didn't want a corps to fold, YOU SHOULD'VE DONE SOMETHING!
stayfrostywilly 2 years ago 17
I do support the activity. I donate to local corps. I buy tickets hoping that the shows will entertain, but they generally fail (with a few exceptions). I've said much in writing to corps, talking with friends who teach in the activity, etc. to express my concern that drum corps has lost touch with the general public (those people who used to attend shows in droves). The DCI intelligentsia turned its back on the fans years ago. They left me, not the other way around.
newtojo 2 years ago 2
@stayfrostywilly , The reason your so called Drum & Bugle Corps is dying is because it has become Professional and unaffordable.

Drum is devolving, not evolving.
newtojo 2 years ago
are you kidding me?!
look how much drums and horns evolved in the past 40 fucking years you dumbfuck!
irishknightt 2 years ago
dev⋅o⋅lu⋅tion - noun: the act or fact of devolving; passage onward from stage to stage.

There used to be 20 drum corps in the Pacific NW....today there are barely 2. Kids used to be able to be involved just by showing up and getting involved.

Not really that funny, I marched with two of these corps.
DCI I not the only problem with drum corps though. Lack of interest in the arts overall is the real issue imo.

I'm gonna be spending most of my season keeping an eye on Reading Buccs and Hawthorne Caballeros.
chade2112 4 years ago

Thank Star of indiana for the all the crap. What's next? Perhaps a three ring circus!
