you actually only have 10 seconds to shoot a free throw. I think Auerbach knew that, but he was just trying to make a point that you're in control and no one is there to rush, hurry or bother you....
@zyxwut321 yes but he's saying that as a thinking mentality...cause you see some people think they have to rush there shots...just relax...focus on the rim and remember your techniques...
I know what you're saying but you should still not dawdle when taking your free throw. A couple dribbles at most and shoot. Some guys like Karl Malone have abused that rule throughout their career.
