People DO care about policy. The ads persuade you that everyone is stupid-associating with them is a mistake-it's better to be atomized at the TV and take what we're given.

But people are more intelligent than ads say. It's tempting to feel like an insider and say "I vote for a candidate who all my idiot neighbors can support," but that's self-defeating, and it betrays democracy. I believe in the revolutionary idea that people are capable of governing themselves.

Well, I just watched it again, and that's what she's saying. Enough with substance, says Maddow, give us more "charisma." We've seen what happens when the electorate votes for the guy they'd most like to have a beer with. Maybe the candidates ought to start actually discussing policy. If people would actually pay attention to Hilary's record rather than her reputation, they would see that she is quite conservative.
