  • Guarda guarda cosa trasmetteva Italia 1 all'epoca... fosse anche ora così...

  • I was a huge fan of the minds in the 80s and the City of lights live album is one of the best live albums ever realeased!

it is true that they take studio versions of there tracks to a whole new level when performed live!

Shame about the 80s fashions though, just look at the size of Mike MacNeils shoulder pads and wtf is Jim Kerr wearing, i do not know?

  • Regarding earlier posting comparing to Pink floyd, I have seen SM and PF several times each and they both bring so much more to live performances than the studio albums can ever convey!

I love both bands as they are so good live, the diference is this.

If you tell a youngster you saw PF live in the 80S they think you are cool!

  • This track is not the same without Michael MacNeil on keyboards. The minds are not the same since he left.

  • Rotterdam Ahoy '85

  • Dove posso trovare il live integrale? Grazie

  • this version makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck ! Love it !!

  • i numeri 1 dei numeri 1 , la prima volta li ho visti a torino nel 1980 come spalla di peter gabriel , SEMPLICEMENTE eccezionali......

  • 4 muppets like Justin Bieber?!

  • sooo funny to read your comments. Man, they are all great !!! I`m glad to love them all. Such great Music, and I was there, in the eighties, beeing 20+, beeing alive and kicking, forever young, so: don`t you forget about me...

  • Pink floyd in a Simple Minds song? wtf Bullshit, there BORING as fooking Hell, Comfortably Boring, Simple Minds soo much betta you old cling on, Jessus let your mind wander, Imagine decent tunes into your heid! some say, this could be the great divide

  • Lousy distorted video. The song still sparkles in the rain, though.

  • jim kerr is so magical and it's a great and emotionnal singer!!

SIMPLE MINDS IS GREAT GREAT BAND!!

  • I have seen all 3, and Pink Floyd is overrated by far. U2 put on a show no one can copy, period. In the 80s I have seen INXS multiple times live, and Hutchence was the master of taking over the crowd. But the quality the Minds put on is amazing, period. And Burchill and Gaynor are amazing as well.

  • @Commander297 i agree except the bit about the floyd, the have stood the test of time, and record sales prove it, dont wanna argue , but the floyd are the masters of live shows, safe mate

  • I remenber it was in Paris Bercy,I was there.....I'll will see them in Paris le Bataclan on 18 june 2010!

  • Posted before and I will post again - absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, different class!!! There are many a fine SM moment but this, for me, is the very best - "I open up, I take a look, into the bright and shiney, shiney book of brilliant things" Please don't mention U2 in the same breath - they never were, and never will be, in the same league - plain and simple!

  • @dicker040 plain and simple minds bought a bootleg years ago live in copenhagen that song was fantastic later it always got shortened to one or two lines before alive and kicking which was a shame i know it was an album track but what a track all around the world

  • @dicker040 you are spot on mate ! this is the defining song of simple minds ! it all came together right here !! never would you here u2 capture a sound like this when all the sounds intwine ! unbeatable simple minds

  • Le dogs bollocks!!! best live piano tune ever

  • Brillant... bands of today, just listen and try and imitate this type of live performance. "Thank you for the pictures of living in the beautiful black and the white............"

  • where can get this DVD?

  • Brilliant!

Can you post East of Easter from same concert?

  • quite possibly the finest SM performance ever - this is nothing less than pure class and the best version of BOBT they have ever done!!!

    enough said...........

  • i saw this live at Cardiff arms park, from the city of light tour, simply awesome.....in my book....their finest song.....just wish this version got released as a single....fantastic....!!!

  • This was their live concert in Paris. No band in the world is able to beat this song. It's a classic! No one can beat Simple Minds

  • gran cancion,gran grupo

  • Absolutely fucking brilliant!

  • Simply mindsweeping from Simple Minds - this song must have been one of their finest moments!

  • best version ever!

  • seen them 1989 rds dublin they rocked

  • @lou0713 I don't agree, he has no voice, doesn't sing on the beat, music is weak... the City of Light version is much better to me

  • five to one, baby

    one to five

    nobody here gets out alive.....

  • From the days of Glittering Prize these guys have been fucking AWESOME! Some of these one hit wonder bands that splatter our airwaves today need to take a leaf out of these guys book and get it on !

  • GREAAAAAAAAAAAAT

  • The original version of this songs sounds completley different to this. You can dance to the original. This is a rock ballad! Both great versions. I prefer this one.

  • This band still got it. Anything they release is beautiful and anyone who has a good taste of music need to hear some tunes of their new album. All the fans know that they were a stadium Rock band, like dire straits and U2. They lost their popularity in the US after they release street fighting years( such a good political album). The good news, they are likely to come to the US and hopefully chicago is one of their touring destinations

  • Love it,ever since it came esp. this version on the double album In the City Of Light, pure class

  • Poor Jim his voice is shattered! He sounds like an 18 month tour!

  • 'Sweetasugar' has a point. I largely agree with him. And no need to..call..him..a..pussy. As the old saying goes: 'People in glass houses should'n throw stones'.

  • 'Sweetasugar' has a point. I largely agree with him. And no need pussies. As the old saying goes: 'People in glass houses should'n throw stones'.

  • thanks for defending me faddy but i would love him to call me a pussy to my face lol and the funny thing all those bands i have mentioned have spoken about simple minds big influence on them

  • Really I love these guys. Even the 90´s and after albums that i didn´t like, today I can hear them and find some special.

Their early 80´s music is absolutely outstanding and awesome. I hope Graffitti Soul will be their real come back!!!

    From B.A.- argentina

  • Simple Minds are not just a "simple" normal band of the 80's! they were ,are and will be 4 ever, one the best live band ever!!Try to compare any single member of the band(JIm kerr,Charlie burchill(guitar),Mick mcneil(keyboard),derek forbes(bass guitar) and The Unreacheable Mel gaynor(Drummer) with anyone you want!!!......not many others musicians are better than them!

Live long Simple minds! 4 me best live band ever with Muse!

  • Thank you for the voice, the eyes and the memories shine

Classic line, though I don't understand it.

  • this is live in rotterdam. a "TUBE" special. It was shown on a friday evening about 6pm and i was in my element. Greatest stadium band of their time

  • This song is just awesome. So many different forms. Just listen to the album, and this is what makes this band so special. They played their music to perform and for music lovers, not for sales and corporate ideals.

  • Completely agree and this live version.. like the Live Album version... is better than the original track on the album.

  • 80s bands suck...but these guys are pretty sick

  • 80 s bands will stay forever you cunt! nobody will remember "bands" who came from 1995 until after

  • fool just you remember this ! and the evidence is right in front of your blinkered eyes ! this is where the killers, muse, manic street preachers, mgmt, coldplay, kings of leon and so many others ahve reached to acheieve but lets just see if they can be around in 30 years and release 16 albums like the minds ! simple minds are true music icons that the bands of today will never get close to !!!!!

  • i'll be honest. besides muse and coldplay the bands you just named suck. and are you trying to tell me that the minds are more prolific then a band like the Chili Peppers for example....they dont have the legacy yet but they are much more prolific in my opinion. i'm not bashing the minds cuz i like them too but come on...they're not "prolific music icons" atleast past the 80s they aren't.

  • you have no idea! simple minds music from 1980 to1984 was the most inovative out of in any band to come from that era! started out semi punk went into new romantic avant garde went into electronic oreintataed albums, went into anthemic rock ok!went political and done there own thing and just because they are not so popular now they have been around 30 years! tip they have a new album out in may called graffiti soul and it wipes the floor with most albums released by other bands this year !!!

  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a complete joke compared to Simple Minds lol

  • are you high bro? you can't be serious.

  • what a fucking joke pussy.

  • felcher you are lol

  • 80s bands have more creativity than anybody from shows like American Idol - muppets who are told what to do by the corporate bosses in the name of money rather than a love of music

  • i don't believe that it is justified to say the American Idol, and Muppets?! are symbols of the this generation of music. Although those from a pop genre might tend to agree with you...I don't.

  • @WalshNo5

You got that one sooooo right

  • Thank you very much for this post. That's full of... brilliant memories for me

    Thanks

    Fabio

  • bring on the nec 28th nov

  • io sono nato il 28 novembre,.......ahhahah....1972

  • bring on Manchester 27.11.08

  • All i have to say is bring on cardiff dec 2nd !!!!!!!

  • I love this live version!

I'm so glad they re-worked it from the original 1984 version, which was dry and uninteresting to me. I never paid this song attention until "Simple Minds: Live In The City Of Light" in 1987, then I was like WOW!!

  • This is such a fantastic live version of a great song, I love it!

  • The best live song EVER!!!!!!!! I hope they play the song when i see them again in november at wembley, AWESOME!

  • I LURVE THE INTRO lol

  • reminds me of seeing them at nec in 89 track of the night fantastic

  • brillant my favourate song they were the best 80s 90s but not now joseph england

  • dear god did someone try and compare stewart copeland on drums to the legend that is Mel Gaynor jesus thats like saying hendrix was ok at guitar ,,,, copleland does what was needed but as far as a Drummer he aint even close to Mel Gaynor i,m playing drums since i was 6yrs old and Copeland aint no mel gaynor my friend

  • Had you seen Happy 30th's just uploaded "Ghost Dancing" from this same concert? It's like Mel is ripping it apart, and takes it to even a higher level, like I've never heard him play before. It was Mel who said he found Simple Minds music easy to play, makes me wonder how he sounds when he's being "challenged" artistically, must be ultra phenomenal!

  • By far Mick MacNeil was the most majestic keyboard player of the 80's, creating a sound that is timeless and full of splendor, just listen to him play on this tune, like an angel demonstrating some of his prowess! Miss you Mick with the Minds, when you coming back!?!

  • there's no dvd of the fabulous "live in the city of lights" ...thank you for this video, thank you so much..i was 15 , it was yesterday...

  • fantastic!

  • The best rock and roll drummer in the world....Mr Mel Gaynor!

I have seen many many live bands through the years and apart from Depeche Mode, Simple Minds kill off all competition. As for U2, hmmm, I couldn't care less, lyrically weak and peaked at Joshua Tree.

Thanks for the vid, brings back good memories! I even used to wear a beret like JK! lol

  • Sorry, but I think Stewart Copeland of The Police is the best! But Mel can bring it, for sure.

  • Stewart is good, but Mel is the best... guess you've never seen the minds live. Longevity, chemistry and synchronised motion. The best live music ever.

  • Mel always said playing SM music was easy for him, he is truly a brilliant studio drummer capable of playing anything...and his work on New Gold Dream "Live In The City of Lights" is simply mind blowing, as if he had three arms! I hope he and Mick rejoin the Minds on their 30th Anniversary tour this year! That'll be toppers!!!

  • when does the simple minds tour start and where? thank you. ITS THE FIRST I`VE HEARD AND I OVER THE MOON. Can`t wait to see my favourite band in the world. THANKS AGAIN.

  • I could not agree with you more.

Simple Minds, best band period in my book.

  • Neal Peart is the best.Rush may be a bit before your time though?

  • I miss these days

  • This song is just one of the greatest ever written ! And ... gives a special feeling live. I sow SM more than 60 times, and this song is never the same live.

  • Was at the Wembley 89 concert too - top lineup. Fab day

  • yeh me too.did you get wet?

  • I remember my husband wearing a bright yellow rain coat but don't remember getting wet. I was obviously having way too good a time to notice!

  • i was at wembley in 89 with texas, silencers and gun as support acts superb gig,i miss my youth lol, bring bk bands as gs as simple minds g4zza i know wot u sayin m8 ,gr8 memories

  • Kippevel!!!!!

  • The best live song ever... brillant intro, middle and finish. It brings back memories. Thanks for sharing

  • one of the best songs ever, saw this band live at wembley stadium in 1989,simply awesome! bands of today should have a great deal of respect for simple minds.

  • Still gives me chills after all these years.

  • Great song. They are incredible.

    Jose Claudio

  • Thank you a lot to post this. :)

  • This song will always belong to my best mate Mark,(R.I.P).A great song that reminds me of all the good times we had as we grew up.A beautiful song that will last forever.

  • The band at their best- way ahead of everyone else including u2 [im afraid to admit it!] everything clicked into place at this time , all the muscians were at the top of their gam, great chemistry. it doesnt get better than this. All you young bands watch and learn!

  • I totally agree - I saw them in Rome = what a setting - sanctify yourself!!

    Regards

    \\\jp

  • Have seen many bands live over the years, including Simple Minds and U2 and can honestly say I think this is the BEST track LIVE - the build up is amazing and just makes me what to leap around the living room - my kids think I've totally lost the plot when I do just that!

  • Fantastic version and one of their best live tracks. The Ahoy in Rotterdam were treated to a classic show on that night. Must agree though that Mick McNeil is sorely missed

  • No doubt-Simple Minds were one of the best,if not the best live band of their time & seeing them recently in Australia & in Europe confirmed they maybe a little older but leave most bands of this era for dead as far as live performance is concerned. Losing Mick McNeil & Derek Forbes robbed them of been even greater over!!

  • de las pocas versiones en directo que mejora de largo la radio edit.

  • love e´m

  • Fkn Pure quality - Never to be beaten

  • simple minds are a better band live !

  • this song restores my faith !!,SO totally powerful, thankyou Simple Minds!!

  • 100 times better than the album version. But BONO is still king!!!!!

  • bobo who?

  • quality !!!!

  • Very VERY powerful, uplifting, hypnotizing, melodic band live.I had shivers uopn shivers down my spine>

They must be Christian or at least the overtones in some of the lyrics!!

    They are superb musicians!!

Jim STILL has an amazing voice last time I saw him!!

  • An awesome band...thanks for the memories.

  • live in the city of light, by far simple minds best work!!

  • I loved SM, but U2 is the greatest ever live band by a gazillion miles. Simple Minds would back that up as well..

  • I recorded this concert when it was on the tube, unfortunately my vhs copy has dissapeared :- (

    Love this version. Kenny, Scotland.

  • you can get those songs that ch4 recorded for that show on the LTD edition 'silver box' albeit only on CD. If you scanned the internet or back of music press im sure there is someone who has done a DVD quality version of it

i remember recording it aswell on my tape cassete player, ooohh memories!!

  • christ i ain't seen this vid 4 bout 16 yrs, this was shot in rotterdam the ahoy stadium i do believe. i was a huge fan. but they made a lot of crap after the streetfighting years album.

  • fucking brilliant havent seen this for about 20 years makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end

  • Awesome song. love the beret. more guys need to wear the beret.

  • Jim Kerr is a god... Simple Minds still remain the best live band I've ever seen. Where was this shot?

  • If you can make this, than its time to WAKE UP and make a NEW PLATINA DREAM 07, 08, 09, 10.

  • An absolute dramatic brilliant opening to a fantastic song. Seen SM a few times but not enough. Would have loved to have been in this vid with a lighter.

  • Surprisingly, Mel Gaynor has said that playing for the Simple Minds never posed any real challenges in terms of his drum playing. Being a studio musician, a heavy weight drummer, even the wonderful work he does here still doesn't bring out the very best of his awsome talent. Charlies looks like he was having a great time here, smiles and all, love those riffs when the song pick-ups tempo!

  • I would say 'BRILLIANT'is the only way to describe this video!!Very touching!!

  • always been my favourite band and always will be! possibly the greatest ever live recording by any band!

  • u obviously havent seen u2 live my friend!

  • yes! U2's live shows are far better thatn Simple Minds, as Pink Floyd live shows are far better than U2 ones. But Simple Minds are very good, too!

  • U2 is a great band no doubt, but they simply lack the melodic magnificence & depth of Mick MacNeil's ingenious keyboard work, just listen to the intro, it's out of this world, that coupled with Charlie's riffs and Mel Gaynor's pounding drums, just takes you flying like on a Concorde!

  • I've seen both,it's just that U2 put more money into their stage production,Simple Minds are a very slick live act and to me just as powerful as U2.I love both bands!

  • fcuking outstanding

  • Recorded or Live music never gets better than this. Although they made it BIG they never got the recognition and status that U2 did. Awesome live performances and great, atmospheric songs. Charlie Burchill must be the most underrated guitarist ever

  • I'd say they were in the same league as U2 for a long time - in fact its fair to say U2 were great admirers of them ,rather than how its usually portrayed as SM being U2 copyists.. actually I thought musically SM were much better until they started going off the boil a bit 86 onwards

  • when mick left that really did stop the sm sound and he was not a song writer but fantastic musician, street fighting years is a great album but only suits that period of time.earlier albums will stand as great albums of all time.

  • this is much better and impressive than Bono. we see here who was bono\s teacher

  • agree totally.street fighting years was far too pompous.new gold dream was pop perfection, sparkle in the rain was awesome, and once upon a time was still sounds fresh today. Most underated drummer,Mel gaynor.

  • this band were amazing and if they hadnt had bothered with street fighting years which was absolute toilet they may have kapt up with U2 New Gold Dream and Once Upon A Time were two of the best albums of the 80s

  • fantastic song :-)))

  • In Mick's final days with the SM's, some infighting broke out between Mick and Jim Kerr, arguments I'm sure Jim regrets to this day. Mick left the group abruptly in the nascent weeks of their "Street Fighting Years" world tour, causing Charlie Burchhill (guitarist) to comment: "....he (Mick) left like a rat from a sinking ship....". Mick's absence left an indelible vacuum in their sound. I hope they reunite in near future.

  • As one can see from this clip, the original SM's keyboardist, Michael (Mick) MacNeil, created most of the SM's extraordinary soundscapes. Sadly, after Mick's departure, the SM's were never the same again. Mick is a piano virtuoso---a musical genius---and a big Beethoven fan, who's classical influences come across quite clearly in the intro herewith. You can google "Mix Records" for Mick's website & latest materials. Mel Gaynor rocks!

  • awesome brings back so many wonderfull memories. timeless classic. goosebumps every time

  • "some say first impression never will lie" this I heard in 1983 when I was 11 years old. this became my life moto, I married a girl on this sentence and never regreted. thank you, jim kerr..

  • what a good energy ! love it ! thanks

  • fuckl

  • c'est génial j'adore définitivement ce groupe. jim est spectaculaire sur scène : this is the rock and the good music

  • Spektaki, could you kindly upload "New Gold Dream" from this live video too? That would be grand! Thanks for sharing mate.

  • New Gold Dream wasn't performed at The Ahoy in 1985,and therefore wasn't broadcast.

The version on In The City Of Lights was only played a couple of times.

  • In 1987 I went to the Philippine islands for the first time, took Live in the City of Lights with me on the plane from San Francisco to Manila, had some weedy laced brownies with my friend Felipe, smoked some joints on the Philippine Airlines Jet Lavatory too when things were LAX. Book of Brilliant Things Live version absolutely mind blowing while viewing a Philippine sunset at the beach---mind blowing and soaring! Thank you Simple Minds for the golden memories!

  • Is this from the Ahoy in Rotterdam. I remember seeing this on the Tube in the UK when they reworked BOBT live and it blew me away. They played this version for the first time in Glasgow on the opening night of the new SECC and the hall went wild. The chairs collapsed and Jim told the audience to keep dancing although security were trying to move us out. My wife met Charlie Burchill that night as well. Brilliant times!

  • Yup, this was the Rotterdam show that C4/The Tube showed back in, what, 85? Somewhere in my parents' house there is a copy of this video.

Didn't see the SECC show, but I was at Ibrox in June 86. Even 20 yrs later, I'd have to say that was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

  • Thanks love this song live

  • Jim is such a passionate performer! His heart just bleeds out to you when he sings, with that great voice that ONLY he has!!!WE ARE SO LUCKY!!!WE CAN APPRECIATE HIM AND ENJOY HIM!!It's so sad to think of what everyone else might be listening to--and they actually think it's good!!WE KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!!LOL

  • This is the "version" of this song I like the most. Unfortunately they don't play this "version" in recent concerts. Also Ghostdancing from this specific concert is great.

Jimmy clothes in this concert seem to me a bit "unfamiliar"

  • It was his Che Guevarra look.

  • wonderful

  • this was filmed when simple minds were at there very best love the clip

  • More please

  • thank u for posting..jim kerr is sooo hot!!!..thanks againg..love the performance and sound!!!
