Hey Dave, just a quick question, this is completely irrealevent but are the parker guitars nice to play, are there necks like any other brand like ibanez thanks?
Very nice and instructive. Thanks David. The point of not overdoing backtrack is essential. I often loose the backtrack goal because of inspiration going on, making more and more layers... which doesn't leave any decent place for guitar.
David, I have a few suggestions as far as metal guitar players. Per Nilsson of Scar Symmetry is absolutely fantastic, and has lots of "Holdsworthian" qualities in his playing. Michael Keene of the technical death metal band The Faceless is a great player as well, especially once you can appreciate the music (which can be a bit overwhelming at first to someone who doesn't listen to that style of music).
Also, is there any reason you make backing tracks in Garageband as opposed to Logic?
Do you use the free demo version of Addictive Drums? I can't afford the real one lol. And I've been using Adobe Soundbooth, is there something I'm missing out on with Garage Band? Thanks in advance.
Hey David, this helps a lot. Two questions remaining though:
1. What's the name of the bass plugin?
2. I heard a hammond-like sound in one of your other tracks (aeolian island groove?) and I wondered if you could recommend a good synth-plugin for these purposes.
really agree with you on the strings part. almost every song i even think about making involves strings. i do however like a very big sound, with lots of elements, eh shakers, multiple synths (since i use reason). great tutorial, definitely going to try some of those things!
Hey David, I've seen your lessons on guitarmasterclass and have learned a ton from ya, its really good to see this lesson here on youtube, glad I found it!!!!!
Brilliant! I always learn something from your videos :) What do you think about Death Metal? I'm sure you're not into it but I'd be interested to hear what you think of the genre. Would love to see you play some too!
@Wallimann Death Metal is a unique beast. There's "classical" death metal which is what the hardcore proponents of the genre say is the ONLY death metal. Those are bands like Death and Norther. Then there's the "new" death metal style (often called by the name "deathcore") which has bands like Job for a Cowboy, Whitechapel, and Emmure. Then there all all the metal bands in between. A lot have REALLY good guitar players (Children of Bodom being one of my favorites). Hope that helps :)
Hey man, i seen one of your JamPlay videos on youtube last night, the theory series, wanted to see more so i got a subscribed on jamplay for a month for starters. Have to say they are brilliant! Your teaching methods are really easy to understand and I have already got through all of the scale and interval videos so I'm going to start on modes today! I am very excited as I've been playing for about 10 years (21yo now) but on and off because I hit a wall years ago and always got bored......
@bellers ......with playing the same ols stuff. So im really going to give this theory stuff a real go, I have tried learning modes before but never got my head around them, so hopefully your way of teaching will shed some light on them!! The interval lesson has already answered a lot of questions I had for years! Can't believe its taken me this long to learn about them!! So thanks very much!!
Great backing. It's a good idea to start with drums, I use to do the same things but I only record some rhythm guitar...the bass line is a good idea lol
This is very helpful! :) I did a song for a friend of mine who wasnt playing much guitar at the time this summer. It was also a lot of fun to do for me. This makes me wanna do another one =) Thank you!
Since video's on backing tracks, I've been wondering. I notice that the backing tracks mostly are in 4/4 timing. I don't have a problem with that, but I've been wondering if you plan on using odd timings (3/4, 5/4, 7/4 for instance) for some future backing tracks :).
I've been recently looking for some for general practice, but haven't really found any.
David is a very sincere, knowledgable and talented musician. His love for teaching others shows. I also like the idea of providing the tools so YOU can apply what you learn. BRAVO my friend!
David,,,you are an absolute TREASURE! I wish you lived in Chicago, I'd probably drive you NUTS, picking your brain on a daily basis! Oh Well,,,,to be the BEST, you gotta play with the BEST, right?
@Wallimann ...and Thank YOU for continuing to put out QUALITY Videos in an Informative AND Entertaining manner! You inspire me every time I check one of your vids out...TRULY!
(,,,and Thumbs WAY Up for Strings,,,I'm a sucker for their sound, too!)
Great video. I'm currently making as many backing tracks to jam on as possible, for a similar reason to you (though I still use many GPB backing tracks ;)) it's amazing that you get such a professional sound from the Apple's standard recording program!
I'm extraordinary impressed by how simple you made this sound. I've tried and failed at doing this before and I knew for sure that I was overdoing it but couldn't stop since I was really unsure about how to go about it in the first place.
This video has changed my perception on what I'm supposed to be doing for the better. Thanks heaps!
Hi, that very interesting. I was wondering though would it differ if you were setting about writing a song rather than a backing track? Would you follow similar methods? It would be cool to see more of this type of stuff. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! I'm really glad you shared these tips :). I might have to give this a try sometime in the future to see what I come up with. I imagine one of the hardest parts of this is coming up with a groove that works while not over doing it.

TheTadz9 3 weeks ago
@TheTadz9 It's hard to compare to anything else, but they are VERY comfortable. About 10 years ago, I was endorsed by Ibanez France.
I went to the music store to try some new Ibanez guitars, and saw that Parker sitting there.
I had to try it just because of its weird shape and it's been my main guitar ever since.

@GuardianOfFate12 Thanks a lot for those suggestions!
I actually know a little of bit of Faceless. Really cool stuff!
The reason I use Garageband the most is that It's so much faster than Logic for "easy" projects such as backing tracks. :-)

Songwriting would be somewhat similar. It all depends on the style of song.
There isn't really any rules. Personally I usually spend much more time on songs, I add complexity and lots of ear candy in it. At least I try!
