  • YEAHHHHH !!!!

  • who is the drummer??

  • ES MARAVILLOSO JEAN LUC PONTY, TOCA BELLOOOOOO!

  • Where the he'll is guitar! Keyboardist missed his cue too!

  • yeaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!!

  • gaaaaaay

  • This guy is great! his timbre sounds like sawtooth wave

  • that was fucking unbelievable, on so many levels.

  • Saw him in salt lake city. What a fantastic show!

  • Genial! aguante Jean Luc!

  • sick drummer

  • To all those who were wondering that is Thierry Arpino on drums.

  • exact group i saw in minneapolis 07

  • It's like "Kansas" without vocals.

  • Yeah, some of the most adventuresome, tasty music came out of Jazz in the 70s —And, what a time for Jean Luc in '76, with "Imaginary Voyage" and "Enigmatic Ocean" in '77 —And, hey, ya gotta love Thierry Arpino's work on traps here —Delicious!...

  • he's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • To have seen this man live in Montreal is one of the highlights of my life. He has such charisma on stage and exudes the powerhouse that he is but in an ever so humble way. Also great interaction with Stanley Clarke and Bela Fleck (Trio!).

  • that grin on the drummers face at 5:20 after his solo was contagious.

  • amazing footage,,,amazing musicians

  • This song has touched my soul so often. He does to the violin what so few have done. IMO, Jean Luc has given wings to the violin in that he allows it to merge over conventional lines and priorly known classic sounds. Also JLP has jumped over many set musical rules resulting in sounds that not only touch my spirit, but gives "museful" type images to my mind. Thank you Jean Luc Ponty for being here in this space in time and giving music to the masses.

  • had the pleasure of seeing him at a club on the water in san diego back in 84. what a perfect afternoon. he has his own place in the fusion world.

  • @gebass6 @iloverune Me too! Get your ARRP cards yet? LoL

  • I love this crazy French violinist who has become part of my musical life. Well, let's face it, music is part of what defines me, and this incredible fusion enhances my life each day. Magnifique!

  • @Ironclad3

He is BELGE, BORN IN BELGIQUE.

  • @jcgrof Are you talking about Ponty here? I'd always been under the impression that he is French. It's also what they say on Wikipedia. Avranches, France, his birthplace. What do you know that Wikipedia does not? :~)

  • @Ironclad35 You should hear him play with john McLaughlin in the mahuvishnu orchestra

  • This takes me back!THIS was my favorite album in '78!I was 18.

  • @gebass6 i loved this album to and i was 18 as well - still love it

  • Wow, this version is really a new look at the original, but so well done! And clean sound on this video as well! Thx.

  • What's the drummers name? I like him way, way better than Rayford Griffin.

  • @drumwraith Thieri Arpini

  • @drumwraith hes tom cruise

  • @drumwraith I don't know Ray is a really good drummer. but really there is no way to say anybody who has played with Jean Luc isn't a good musician. I saw Jean Luc Ponte on 'The Gift of Time' tour with Griffen. awsome show .

  • nice ! ですね.

  • such a great ong

  • I love the album version as much as anyone, but I like that he chose to interpret it as more of a straight-ahead jazz samba here. It almost feels and sounds more like late 60's acoustic modern jazz than late 70's fusion.

  • This Music Reminds me Fzero Game for SNES....

if i dont wacht it here i could sware that was from the game

  • WOW!this is tooooooo coooooooooool!

  • Yeah, missing Holdsworth as well. This is just not the same without him.

  • With Ralph Armstrong on bass originally!

  • Takes me back. What stellar playing all around. Maybe add a dash of Holdsworth yes, also the vintage Barcus Berry sound from Ponty, particularly on the lower strings. But still, just incredible. Merci!

  • yeaaahh!

  • the drummer's faces are priceless

  • dang that drummer got chops!

  • By far one of his best performances .....OMG! I will say it again...enjoy....float away ....and oh yeah....don't forget to breathe!!!!!

  • A este tema solo le falta Allan Holsdwoth para que sea perfecta.

  • Also don't forget Steve Smtih of Journey fame was rockin the drum kit on that alblum!

  • love it love it too cool!

  • que epoca los 70................se respiraba creatividad , buen gusto , musica fusion de alto nivel , la mejor decada...............

  • THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST in my book since years

  • I used to have several of JLP's recordings on CD. I lost them all in a house fire.

  • I love Jean Luc!

  • They had these great quality videos here in youtube of him playing with Stanley and Al. They've all been removed. I love Ponty. Because of him I started to listen jazz. I've been like in 8 of his concerts through the years, more than any artist of any kind of music I've seen. Thanks for your music Maestro Jean Luc Ponty.

  • If this music is your "Balliwick", check out Mahavishnu Orchestra's stuff (Jean Luc + McGaughlin on guitar)

  • in the early 70's....we just called this 'Progressive Jazz'

Now...I just call it good sh-t!!

  • Please don't use that word when you don't like it. I really love Jean Luc and his music too much, since I met him in the Rotterdam Jazzclub B-14 in the early 70s.

  • henkokwithoutherbie:Apologies offered but not sure what word you found offensive. A correction, however,is in order. I really, really like his music. I don't understand how you got the impression that I didn't.

  • I am very sorry, dugdad58 then I am wrong! Enigmatic Ocean is one of the very best. On March 20, 2010 I saw and met Jean Luc at Jazz Masters Maastricht/Holland again. The pieces he played were brilliant!! Thanks to Wolfgang Dauner too!

  • That is some awesome stuff right there.

  • great!!

  • thank you so much this reminded me of the old allan holdsworth lineup when steve smith played with him back in 1977, just a ;little more contemporary cool soloing

  • El mejor violinista del Mundo

Le meilleur du monde Jean Luc Ponty

    Antero Moreno

  • I'd like to hear how kid drummer Igor Falecki would sound with JLP

  • I didnt know Tom Cruise played drums? Just kidding but who is this guy, great drummer!

  • awesome, but yea missing holdsworth

  • My fav of LP was in a small venue in Royal Oak MI when he Ralph Armstrong and a great drummer ( cannot remember his name) but what a great concert. I have seen JLP in big and small venues he is always fantastic.

    Bill

  • Haha, I used to date his daughter. They live in North Country San Diego. Cool people, for sure.

  • Jean Luc really is a visionary and a genius. thanks for the post.

  • learning to wait and place...its in

    there...no typewriting?;)

  • what a great performance! I'm definitely going to fav this one...

  • Jean-luc Ponty was the drum'n'bass of the 1970s. So good.

  • great musicians!! where are those in these days??

  • jazz concerts are all over the place. just have to look for them, they certainly don't go to huge arenas...

  • saw them yesterday in oberkochen (BW, germany).... great combo

  • The audience is so well mannered. Drummer really did a fine job of making that groove his own. Got to be a motherfucker to stay on top of that tempo and keep it loose.

  • hawksapoozle: The drummers creed: To keep a fair fight from becoming an ugly brawl. ;-) Cheers.

  • Amen to that!

  • Voila! Beautiful bit of drumming there, smooth and subtle, no showy pyrotechnics like some drummers (no names!). All in all superb music, merci!

    sd goh (malaysia)

  • What, no guitar player? Hello? What was needed here was Daryl Stuermer's work from the Enigmatic Ocean album. This just wasn't the same.

  • Dont forget Allan Holdsworth played guitar on the Enigmatic Ocean album also mate....... Stunning soloing from him throughout the album

  • yes...and sadly, that video seems to have been removed! I'm so bummed, I had a knack to hear my favorite guitar solo of all time today!

  • That album, along with Imaginary Voyage, also included Daryl Steurmer on guitar- they trade off a lot of solos, with minimal ego attached. Those albums have held up very well over more than 30 years!

  • @sadge211 yeah , And also dont forget Steve Smith used to play with them also,, long before Journey

  • @sadge211 fuck yeah allan holdsworth kick ass on that song love this shit!!

  • From the days of the Mother's and the great solo in 50/50...Dinah Mo Hum and Montanna (I love dental floss bikinis) and the rest to today.....Jean luc is the MAN!

  • what's the bass player's name?

  • Guy N'Sangue Akwa

  • Jean,

I've loved your music since hearing it on Birmingham Alabama's K99 FM album station back in 1978. Late one night they spun Cosmic Messenger. I went out the next day searching for that album. I've loved it ever since and almost everything else you've done since.

Thanks for the YEARS of great music!

    Love ya man

    Hugh

  • Hello Jean :

I remember that number well. Enviable rhythm section and your playing is of course spectacular !

    best regards,

    Robert Seagrove

  • 10x

  • Is it just my imagination, or does Ponty end up quoting Holdsworth's licks from the original album at various points?

  • terje rypdal return of per ulv has alot of great trilok gurtu's playing

  • Sounds a bit like Zappa's Montana...that one riff! I've been a devout fan of Jean-Luc since about 1980. Of course, he was with Zappa in the 60's & 70's, & that's all good but he really came into his own in the late 70's & into the 80's. He went Cosmic!

  • at 5:00 he's just like mike mangini in his famous solo :D

  • He´s a great drummer, though his solo stinks!

  • Insane?! I like insane. The world could more insanity of this nature

  • Yeah, and a good part less of the other insanity. But I do think that the posters before you also meant insane positively.

(If you really want insane drumming, check Trilok Gurtu or Mahavishnu Orchestra)

  • I agree, Will check out Trilok Gurto,.. Mahavishna Orchestra goes without saying.I've Been into John and Company since a buddy turned me on many moons ago.

What do you think of Cobham's solo work? Check out Roy Buchanan, Masiah come again, Amazing Guitar work. Peace

  • the drumming is insane

  • agreed!

  • Bellisimo !!! gran concierto ! aunque a esta altura de mi vida este fundido y no tenga posibilidades de asistir a una velada así, aun queda internet y hoy he gozado de esta maravilla... Gracias Jean Luc Mercy mon ami

  • great, great .thanks for your music..!!

  • I LOVE this song!!!

  • Cmon Jean luc... bring back the ROCK the word that comes top mind is diluted pony tail jazz i think its time for the enigmatic oceans reunion alan zavod on the arps funky ass ralphe armstrong Daryl steurmer rocking the hagstrom swede holdsworth and either steve smith or casey sheurell on sonor drums and put some friggin phaser on that violin bro mutron that bitch!! and stop tucking in your shirt comon bro
  • hahaha....

  • yeah!

  • exelent sound

    Is Once Enough?

  • not likely :)

  • CLASSIC TUNE BY JLP AND BAND!!!

  • who's the drummer! He's such a cutie!

  • Killer drum solo!!!!!! and a cutie too!!! Oooh laa laa......when was this recorded?

  • ...when he was younger. At the year 1977

  • are you sure this is from 1977? the video quality looks too good and the sound as well. also, jean-luc looks older.

  • There's a banner in the background that looks like it says Jazz Jamboree '99. Visible after the performance when Ponty is introducing the band.

  • This was NOT in '77, he is much older in this video than he was in the '82 video I just watched.

  • ENIGMATIC OCEAN WAS RECORDED IN 1977. This video is NOT from 1977 obviously, but the piece is from 1977.

    On drums .....Thierry Arpino

  • and to not have on film that LP studio recording with Daryl Stuermer and Allan Holdsworth is a sadness i cannot comprehend. Bravo to JLP.

  • great jazz but in the drum solo there was a part that it was kind of a copy of one of vinnie colaiuta's solo

  • Not really. If you're referring to the rapid alternating 32nd notes between his toms and bass drum...it's not really Vinnie's lick. Vinnie actually got that from Tony Williams. One lick hardly makes the whole solo a "copy."

  • thanks.. i just tought it sounded kinda alike but hey im only 14 =P ive still got a lot to learn thanks again

  • For sure man. You should definitely check out tony williams. I'd recommend buying the cd "four and more." Tony played with Miles Davis when he was SEVENTEEN! He's sick man.

  • Superstar! Great clip. Thanks for sharing.

  • Now that's jazz man!

  • but it´s not avant-gard.
