Cantonese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Mandarin...

Now I'm from Hong Kong, and live there, and I'll say both languages are beautiful but we must not forget that Mandarin is widely spoken language, and is a necessary subject to learn (it's taught even in America). Cantonese is nice, yes, but it's not as important as a language compared to Mandarin; and Cantonese is from Mandarin in the first place anyway.

Each language has its beauty, let's just live with it. C:

@Bluey306 You are gravely mistaken... graaaaaaaaaavely mistaken! Cantonese did not come from Mandarin, in fact you may consider it as the other way round, but I'd rather not have them related. Mandarin only came along when the Manchurians occupied China, and it was their attempt at integrating their language into the Chinese culture. Cantonese had been around way before that. This is why Mandarin is aka 官話 (official's lang.) during the Manchurian occupation, and Cantonese aka 唐話 Tang's speech.

@Bluey306 And furthermore, they did it terribly. Mandarin has lost all the consonant endings such as -p, -t, -k and -m that are preserved in Cantonese and various other Chinese languages. Even Korean and Japanese have preserved old Chinese pronunciation far better than Mandarin. Have you seen a Tang Dynasty poet's mockery of a certain minority's poor grasp of the Chinese language? He said 十 sounds like 石 and 針 = 真, 天陰 = 天因. You'll notice Cantonese make the distinctions, but Mandarin does not.

It's not that I don't /care/; but Jesus Christ this is a language-cover song of a Disney Classic.

@Bluey306 You have obviously been given the wrong information. I suggest you read what TaiGekTou wrote, because it is correct. It is impossible that Cantonese comes from Mandarin linguistically speaking, because Cantonese has 9 tones while Mandarin only has 4. Tones are lost over time, not gained; this means that over time Mandarin tones merged with one another, shortening the tone count from 9 to 4. Also, Mandarin lacks "entering tones" which Cantonese preserves. Examples: 百、垃、月、佛, etc.

@anythingnew To me, Yes. Canto differs from Mandarin in that it has -p, -t, and -k at the end of words, which gives the language that concise, clean feel and makes for pure-sounding songs. The -p, -t, and -k endings give the word and clean cut-off, as opposed to Mandarin which does not have -p, -t, or -k. Examples of Canto words are baak, pat, dik, etc. These words in Mandarin are bai, pie, and de (notice they all end in vowels). Since Canto has more phonemes, the lyrics sound more wholesome.

Mandarin completely lost these phonemes, begging the question if it can even be considered a real Chinese language, since the ancient forms of Chinese all had -p, -t, and -k. The -p, -t and -k consonant endings on words gives them a clean-cut ending, making the language sound very precise and clear. If these qualities are to your liking, it will sound good to you.

@Bluey306 Whether or not one language is more "useful" than another should not matter. Different languages are useful in different contexts. Maybe Mandarin is can reach a wider audience, but if you came to my hometown and spoke Mandarin to the Chinese people, you would not impress anyone. They would just be wondering why you are speaking a foreign language and why you are speaking it as if you are so great. Most older people do not know a word of Mandarin, so is it useful when speaking to them?

@Bluey306 If it is usefulness that is in question, then why does the whole world not just give up their own language and speak English, since it is more "useful?" When your children cannot communicate with your parents because you only taught them Mandarin, you will regret it. People need to think about the future as opposed to just the moment. If you do not preserve your language now, who do you think will? The people that do not care, or the ones who are already killing it?

From my experiences with listening to both Cantonese versions and Mandarin versions of the same song, the lyrics for the Cantonese versions are usually better.

Wow thanks for the lyrics. While the Mandarin version is just as well performed, the lyrics for the Canto is indeed 10x that of the Mando lol. It actually managed to accurately translate the meaning of the song where the Mando one just goes on about love. Totally agree with F0reseer.

The poetic depth of the Cantonese lyrics is 10X that of the Mandarin version. The meaning is so much richer and the imagery impeccable. It's like reading poetry from some Classical Chinese work. The Mandarin, I'm sorry but it's just lacking in form and evokes very little.
