Love these guys, the Live Lp is a favorite along w/ Strange Dreams .But Frank used alot of audience fill during mixdown/mastering on the album. Listen carefully you will hear the same audience reactions thru out the track endings etc
In addition for filling in the holes of a 3 piece band live there are alot of harmonizers and other f/x going on especially on this track.
Just wish he would have added a 2nd guitarist and not got so reliant on adding to the live mix performance in those ways!
I love this song but what ever happened to that tune you guys did at the " Tales of the Unexpected" tour I think called, :10 Little Indians" here in at the Warner's theater? Would love to get my hands on a recording of that one too! Don't ever stop playing for God's sake.I just wanted to say that I know you were influenced by Jimi but you are a highly original guitarist with an awe inspiring bassist and drummer. --just a dragonfly buzzin' around.
It sounds to me like Franks just using alot of effects on his guitar thats all and that extra rhythm guitar your hearing is his "Brother" playing off to the side of the stage, Something he did from time to time, Hard to see him in this video but you can see him in some of the early "King Be Baby" videos. Turn it up Frank!!!
@4speedpony I hope that was the case! Still, he shoulda introduced him and given him a little credit. People probably would have thought it was cool! I hope that helps dispel the "loop" stories. I met Frank at Tower Records in Seattle in 1977, and he was a pretty trippy guy. Happy, and not the least bit arrogant. Definitely stoned.
I love Frank as much as anyone, but this was from the era when he was accused of having some over-dubbed stuff going on through the PA. You can here some rhythm guitar happening that he can't be playing...
@sandran7121 No worries there! Frank has more talent in his pinky finger than most acts. It was actually too bad that the rhythm guitar loops were in there - not like he needed them. I saw him several times in the mid to later 70's and he totally kicked ass with no loops...
@sandran7121 Ted Nugent used to chew gum when he was with "Damn Yankees"...I never understood it. He never used to do it earlier in his career. When I saw Mahogany Rush in the earlier days, I don't remember the gum chewing thing...But Frank cant help it...He's Canadian! And anyway...Even if he was, it was worth it, to watch him play the shit out of that SG....
@sandran7121 Nugent only chewed gum with Damn Yankees. Weird. I've got some old black and white photos of Frank at Tower Records in Seattle, 1977 or so. His skin was a little ruddy, but he had some pretty nice hair.
If you've never heard Frank Marino much, you have to give his "Live" album a listen. His version of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Who Do You Love?" and the rest just rocks. His "World Anthem" album get s a little sappy, but there is some epic stuff on there, too.
The urban legend surrounding Marino is- around when hendrix died- marino knew nothing about guitar playing--then frank had a dream one night . in it Hendrix visited him and handed him a guitar and said 'here man, you take over from here"...apparently he woke up knowing how to play- this is how i heard it...at least.
Ahh, Mahogany Rush, I remember this band and song in Jr high, WAY WAY ahead of their time, This band was nothing short a stick of dynomite, His guitar tone was so Incredible".to say the least and a voice to match! No one unerstood Jimi Hendricks voice either but it didnt matter.......
I am originally from Montreal now in Toronto. I saw these guys in a church across from my school Howard S. Billings, Maple Ave. Chateauguay Quebec. around 1970 something. for something like $2.oo. I believe they played with April Wine that night. Great show. Ahh memories.
Frank,,,I grew up in Montreal in the early 70,s and in the Mid 70,s KISS ruled,,,Then came Stevie Ray,,,Then Van Halen,,But Frank still has what it takes to get it done
@vanhalen515084...I totally hear you on that. That's the difference. Musicians and "Artists" are nothing alike. Hell even singers are ok in my book cause EVERYBODY can't sing. Anyone can run around on stage w/ your pants falling off yelling YO YO YO....... But i'm just from another generation. If u aint singing or playing something.......I'm not interested

Montreal Forum, opening for Nazareth. I was there that night. Frank did a 20 minute solo under a strobe light I almost lost my rum all over the floor. LOL
Great piece of kick ass SG sound. What a band he had then...I agree with many of you...the drummer is awesome...what's his name? What can you say about Frank that hasn't been said before....wish I was at that very concert.

even the 80s guys have there logical heros, but i am so dissapointed in the new generation, who do the rap guys look up to, that stuff is just shit, m and m, give me a break, whatever happened to people who play real instruments, not a turntable
@vanhalen515084 I listened to this group thanks to my Uncle, when I was growing up. Your'e right,he IS a guitar god!!! I always loved this group, and people say to me,WHO? Very good, and underrated guitar player, like so much CANADIAN TALENT!!!
@fierospeedgirl i was working in edmonton, yrs ago, a friend gave me this and said that i will hear how he influenced zakk wylde. wow was he right, zakk is a super fan of him and being a zakk fan, i could hear frank all over his style,
@vanhalen515084 What makes you think a turntable is not an instrument? How do we define instrument. Shit a computer synthesizer is an instrument if you think about it. Music is subjective, some people like certain things others like other things...It's part of what makes life so interesting, is all the different views...The key is respect though, and remember its subjective. If you don't like it why spread negativity? Just carry on with what you like and everyone's happy then!
well folks, you are looking at a guitar god, he is just incredible, and super song this is, what a sound he gets from his solid state amps, he never liked tube amps, because they change sound throughout the night, as they warmed up, best sg sound ever, amazing player
Did many bong hits back in the '70's, but that wasn't what made the music good. Frank's live album made me the guitarist I am today. Live version of King Bee where it did the Stormy Monday jazz riff up the neck made me lose my mind. Kept me playing. Watch it, learn it, know it, it will change you as a player.
I remenber back in the day, to hear a person play an instrument so intertaining with a diffrent sound to the ear. The sound of change was in the making...for all you music lovers out there "WHERE EVER YOU ARE."
@sgr202060 Ahhh!! I went to the Capitol Centre sooo many times. Lived in Lanham, Bowie, Crofton, etc. Saw Sabbath, Queen, Blackl and Blue (Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult), ELO, Rod, and a few shitty bands too. Great sound on the floor, but echoey everywhere else. Oh, and Van Halen a few times.
first time I saw frank was on t.v. in 78 or 79 california jam...frank was just coming on and I had no idea who he was...the name mahogany rush sounded like a cover band for rush also the three piece band members made me leary but...when the lights went dim and they were anounced then cut into the answer...holy shit ...I never seen anyone play and sing with that intensity and the build up to the guitar solo except for frank...yea what a rush..bong hits any body?
A marino classic!!! Ive been a frank marino fan for 32 years, the guy just friggin slays me. AWESOME player. I saw him in toronto in 1987(i think)at the copa with ronnie montrose, superb show. Frank, your a canadian treasure.
yea it relly piss me off i never here frank marino on the raido every time i call to reqwest a song they tell me they dont have it in the system thats relly fuked up becaus i used to lised to him back in 73 i dont care what any body seys hes a dam good gitar player and he should be reconiezed more at lest play him on the radio rock on frank .
Yeah isn't that something. I worshipped this guy in high school back in the early 80s and none of my friends had even heard of him. Pissed me off. He deserved so much more recognition. He's just amazing
frank marino saw them twice in nola @ the warehouse awesome venue. frank actuyally believes jimmi is reincarnated thru him watch his show and you will see it and feel it. he does red house on his knees with amp feeds then lights guitar, power trio at finest tight ass kick out jams
@freakflag56 Yes.. I read in Hit Parader (or Circus) that Frank states he took a really bad-ass hit of acid and it landed him in a mental hospital and when he came to/regained consciousness/reality.. that he could sing and play guitar like Jimi Hendrix.. after having never played the guitar before that experience. (Hmmm.. a true Jimi Hendrix experience?) :-)
This is an amazing peace of music - it electrified me back in 79 when I first heard this song - and it still does after 30 years!!! The band plays really thite and Frank is flying over it with some awsome guitarlicks and a soulful voice! I could listen to it over and over!!!
Man, I used to love to go and see Mahogany Rush when they came through Austin back in the late 70's. Great times, awesome guitarist; Frank ruled, mind-blowing fast.
A mind-blower. The rythm alone is enough to satisfy. But throw the lead on and you've got some serious things goin' on here. Marino was committed. Not just to following Hendrix. He took it down his own trail, and the majority of his recordings and live shows was and is something to hold tight to.
Interesting tune, huh? Backup vocals, 7th/min 9 chords...sure miss that kind of thing these days. For a time all I listened to was Frank, Uli Roth and Trower. Yeah, so they all copped a lot of stuff from Jimi; but they all took it somewhere different. Definitly worth a look...eventually, though, if you want to keep growing blues rock leads to jazz. Coltrane, Miles, Jaco, McLaughlin, Holdsworth. Jeff Beck knew this well.
i like him because he's pretty much the only guitar hero on a sg. angus young and iommi are more meat-and-potato kind of players (great in their own way).
This song is so fucking stoney. It reminds me of when me & my crazy friends went to Cal Jam II, those were the good ole' days. Frank is so talented to sing like he does while he's playing like he does. One in a million, Frank rocks!!!!
I first heard this song in Meridian Ms in 1976 at the post exchange, bought the 8 track and played the shit out of it, loved the whole album Mahogany Rush IV
Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live is one of the best live albums ever produced. saw them at the World Music Festival, 4/79, still one of the best live performances I've ever seen!
Saw Frank @ Cal Jam 2, this crankin tune & King Bee were the best of the set....... Edwards AFB representing the Mojave Desert @ Ontario Motor Speedway, damn what a concert that was!
I may have also saw this tour...or it may have been the year before. He opened for Blue Oyster Cult in Missoula Montana. First concert I ever saw....great memories!
Life's short so just do it. You can get an SG special a few hundred cheaper than a standard and they sound great too. You can always upgrade the pickups later for a different sound
The thing that got me about this video (aside from the absolutley stellar vibe of ths song it self) was when I was reading the lyrics for the song and listening to him sing them, he just flows with it with oh I can't even think of the words but he sings what seems like complex syllables with easy never missing a beat...Now that's the definition of talent
@PatinOmaha - Yeah, Jim Ayoub is a kickass drummer. Frank always plays with amazing drummers. I saw Frank live for the first time the very next year (1980) in Phoenix. I've seen him play live more than any other artist, and I used to work for a concert promoter in the 1980s. Of all my guitar heroes he will always be #1.
@christineglamazonFrank toured with a drummer named Tim Beiry. I probably spelled that wrong. Tim Beiry is a local dude, here in Maryland. He played with the late great Danny Gatton. I got to do some recording at Tim's place while he was on tour. What a badass...... Whew.
@christineglamazon: Back in '84, Frank played with a drummer from Long Island named Joe Franco. He was a great drummer but I don't think many people outside the N.Y. area know him. Ritchie Blackmore was in the audience that night and I thought Joe was going to be the next DP drummer. His drum solo that night was one of the best I've ever seen.
I saw Frank around 1983 in New York City at i believe was the old Ritz, this being my first time seeing Frank i was truly mesmerized by his power, speed, imagination on guitar....i wish he would get the notoriety he deserves, yet they throw money at rappers, go figure.
If anyone can confirm Mahogany Rush at the Old Ritz in New York City around 1983, please do !
@Bluzisreal: I didn't see Magogany Rush at the old Ritz - but I remember a few other shows there. It was great (11th St.). I saw the Michael Schenker Group there in Spring of '84, it was a great show. (I also saw them at the "new" Ritz in '90)
Have you seen Frank recently? Do you still live around the N.Y. area? He played B.B. King's in Times Sq. last November & they've told me he'll be coming back. He's been playing Vegas for about the past two months. I wished he'd extend his tour back here.
Bell bottoms, bong hits, frisbees...thirty years later, this song still gives me a rush. Frank Marino....the best guitarist nobody has heard of...amazing!!!!
This was/is fantastic! Man, I miss those days - this live version choked me up - awesome! FM has been hugely over-looked by Rock & Roll "establishment" This IS Rock & Roll! Thanks for posting this - would love to see/hear this on DVD! Brings back great memories... ;-)

@vanhalen515084 I listened to this group thanks to my Uncle, when I was growing up. Your'e right,he IS a guitar god!!! I always loved this group, and people say to me,WHO? Very good, and underrated guitar player, like so much CANADIAN TALENT!!!

@fierospeedgirl i was working in edmonton, yrs ago, a friend gave me this and said that i will hear how he influenced zakk wylde. wow was he right, zakk is a super fan of him and being a zakk fan, i could hear frank all over his style,
vanhalen515084 1 year ago

The sound of change was in the making...for all you music lovers out there "WHERE EVER YOU ARE."

first time I saw frank was on t.v. in 78 or 79 california jam...frank was just coming on and I had no idea who he was...the name mahogany rush sounded like a cover band for rush also the three piece band members made me leary but...when the lights went dim and they were anounced then cut into the answer...holy shit ...I never seen anyone play and sing with that intensity and the build up to the guitar solo except for frank...yea what a rush..bong hits any body?

frank marino saw them twice in nola @ the warehouse awesome venue. frank actuyally believes jimmi is reincarnated thru him watch his show and you will see it and feel it. he does red house on his knees with amp feeds then lights guitar, power trio at finest tight ass kick out jams
freakflag56 1 year ago
@freakflag56 Yes.. I read in Hit Parader (or Circus) that Frank states he took a really bad-ass hit of acid and it landed him in a mental hospital and when he came to/regained consciousness/reality.. that he could sing and play guitar like Jimi Hendrix.. after having never played the guitar before that experience. (Hmmm.. a true Jimi Hendrix experience?) :-)

may have seen this tour it's about the right time and everybody usually doesn't have a clue who he is; what a shame.

Great times, awesome guitarist; Frank ruled, mind-blowing fast.
nkerns 2 years ago
A mind-blower. The rythm alone is enough to satisfy. But throw the lead on and you've got some serious things goin' on here. Marino was committed. Not just to following Hendrix. He took it down his own trail, and the majority of his recordings and live shows was and is something to hold tight to.

old k-she classic!!
killcraz 2 years ago
Interesting tune, huh? Backup vocals, 7th/min 9 chords...sure miss that kind of thing these days. For a time all I listened to was Frank, Uli Roth and Trower. Yeah, so they all copped a lot of stuff from Jimi; but they all took it somewhere different. Definitly worth a look...eventually, though, if you want to keep growing blues rock leads to jazz. Coltrane, Miles, Jaco, McLaughlin, Holdsworth. Jeff Beck knew this well.

Yeah the drummer is impressive!
scoobes11 2 years ago
@PatinOmaha - Yeah, Jim Ayoub is a kickass drummer. Frank always plays with amazing drummers. I saw Frank live for the first time the very next year (1980) in Phoenix. I've seen him play live more than any other artist, and I used to work for a concert promoter in the 1980s. Of all my guitar heroes he will always be #1.
christineglamazon 1 year ago
@christineglamazonFrank toured with a drummer named Tim Beiry. I probably spelled that wrong. Tim Beiry is a local dude, here in Maryland. He played with the late great Danny Gatton. I got to do some recording at Tim's place while he was on tour. What a badass...... Whew.
carpig12 1 year ago

Bluzisreal 2 months ago
@Bluzisreal: I didn't see Magogany Rush at the old Ritz - but I remember a few other shows there. It was great (11th St.). I saw the Michael Schenker Group there in Spring of '84, it was a great show. (I also saw them at the "new" Ritz in '90)
Have you seen Frank recently? Do you still live around the N.Y. area? He played B.B. King's in Times Sq. last November & they've told me he'll be coming back. He's been playing Vegas for about the past two months. I wished he'd extend his tour back here.
