  • The Killing Fields was a very good film but it didn't start off well. The first half an hour seemed too rushed. I thought the last forty minutes was outstanding. Especially the part where Dith Pran is caught listening to the radio in English and they realise he is educated and can speak other languages. Then some guy tells him that his wife died while he was fighting for the revolution. And after that, he is helping the guy's kid escape through the jungle and they step on a bomb trap.

  • Linda Hunt is classy as hell.

  • i actually cried watching this.

  • 'Killing Fields' was a great, important movie, and Mr. Ngor was very good, but Adolph Caesar deserved it that year. Watch 'A Soldier's Story' and tell me what happens if he's not in it - he is the heart and soul of that film.

  • He survived the killing fields of Cambodia but couldn't survive the killing streets of East LA. Dr. Haing S. Ngor was a true profile in courage and one of the most deserving Oscar winners ever.

  • Caesar should've won the Oscar, or at least there should be more Asians today being nominated for one.

  • Pat Morita is mumbling to himself, "Arhasdlkjsltaaaaaa... the one year I'm nominated, they find a more authentic Asian in the category... a guy literally from the jungle!"

  • the most deserving oscar ever

  • A mighty actor who played one of my favorite characters in film.

  • What a very remarkable actor!

  • Humbling

  • What an amazing human being....my heart hurts to know how his end came...

  • @cubanbach - my heart also hurts and i cry over it. thank you for saying this.

  • He did an amazing performance in that film. no one could have done it better. R.I.P. Haing S. Ngor

  • hum i don't know, if i saw this guy on the street, i think i would be scared. he looks aggressive.

  • survived killing fields and was murdered in USA.

  • Why did they show a title card for Hang S. Ngor if he was there, in the audience?

  • ching chung ching chong

  • R.I.P One best asia actors =)... I will still love man =)

  • WOW man shit this was during the time when the Oscar was actually WORTH something. Now is a fucking JOKE!

  • Very inspirational victory here. However, it cannot really be called "acting" as he was

basically portraying himself in the movie. Very sad that he was murdered 10 years

    later tho. RIP Dr. Ngor!

  • @JOJO22858 why do you say he was portraying himself?

  • why didn't they get him an interpreter? i would have loved to know what he said but i don't speak cambodian.

  • RIP

  • Two Asians nominated for the same role, HOLY SHIT!!!!

  • @samuraiyao you mean for the same "category" ;)

  • i watched the killing fields on BBC1 last night and had to find more material on this guy. when i read that he died i felt truly sad for someone who i didnt know, such talent wasted

  • I didn't think he showed up! Why wasn't he seen sitting down?

  • @renues

The ushers had initially taken him to the wrong seats as he arrived at the awards ceremony after it had begun.

  • KARATE KID !! 1984

  • he really earn this award! he has been true so horrible things and nothing will make it better but it´s good that he could tell his story!

and it´s so horrible that he died in this tragical way he should had have a long and happy life after all this horrible things...

  • Huh, i wonder why they didn't have a camera on him in the audience.

  • Mind blowing to consider this was basically his only acting role

  • I just can't believe that Mr. Miyagi is actually an actor named Pat Morita, and that's why he should have won.

  • Malkovich who starred with Ngor in THE KILLING FIELDS and learned some of his native language - shoured "The Oscar is mine mother**cker" in Ngors native tongue while he was going to the stage

  • This was not a supporting role. Dith Pran's story was the center of the film. Was Sam Waterston's character the center of the story? No. So what was this? Racism?

  • @bapyou

Hollywood mainly gives best actor/actress awards to white ppl....all other minorities get the "supporting" actor/actress awards....that seems to be the trend...

  • "wax on, wax off"

  • It's not a supporting role at all. John Malkovich should've won.

  • With all respect I wish you a better life in the next life..my heart goes out to you

  • RIP Haing S. Ngor...to everyone who thinks that haing got killed by some random thug was a lie!! you know dam well he got murdered for telling the true story of the khmer rouge..Cheyo cambodge biotch!!!!

  • @milliet08 i've always figured some cambodian official had him killed. i've never believed he was robbed

  • @tranurse Khmwe people killed him? no it was either chinese or VC

  • His story has been my inspiration ever since I read "A Cambodian Odyssey", the autobiography of his life. Not to denigrate Dith Pran's experience, but if the audience members knew what Dr. Ngor had been through to get to that point, they would have given him a 10-minute standing ovation. Absolutely miraculous. He was an incredible soul.

  • Both Asian nominees were well deserving of the award

  • The fact that he was able to play a role that brought back memories of horrible tragedies and atrocities is worth the Oscar in itself.

  • How Pat Morita didn't win that Oscar is beyond me.He was robbed.Haing S. Ngor should have been in the Best Actor Category, not Supporting Actor.

  • @WEINBAUER Agreed... Although looking back now I honestly feel Pat Moritas role was a lead role as well... (although not considered so by the selectors at the time). Interesting how time can change someones perspective... Mr Miyagi is what the Karate Kid movies are all about. His kind nature, wisdom and hidden strengths. Check out the live interview with him ( 7 parts - bit of a marathon - but very interesting).

  • Thank-You for letting Hunt give out the oscar

  • Now. almost 30 years later I consider it a privilege having been part of of this film as an extra for all these months of production in Thailand. Back then, none of the cast had a name,no one knew Malkovic , Waterston or Ngor, we were like a big family, eating, drinking and joking together.Blessed memories.

  • @atzengruber May I know what scene are you in? Ngor well deserved this honour, he totally owns the film. I am glad the film lets him shine and doesn't present a Western-biased view of the events.

  • @atzengruber Awesome! You were in a movie that changed my life when I was 14. A masterpiece and a valuable tool that taught me about the terrible and beautiful in humanity

  • @atzengruber Ummmm.... Wasterson had been around for years before this movie

  • @atzengruber

The killing fields is one of the most powerful and brilliant films of all time. It was a love story with no gay sub text or any female lead yet I was chocked up when I saw it many years ago in the cinema. Haing Norg was brilliant as Dith Pran. I wish he was around today. Humans never seem to learn from their mistakes of the past. All power crazy and making the common people suffer....I hope you enjoyed your time as an extra for this wonderful film.

  • If you haven't already I suggest you read his autobiography.

  • "cheyo kampuchea!" at the end.

  • I saw the killing fields now, research for him, saw that he was "Died =*( sad... He was very good acters

  • What a damn shame that after all this remarkable and brave man lived through his life was ended by some thug with a gun. RIP Mr Ngor.

  • I haven't seen this movie to it's entirety since I was 8 years old, but wasn't Haing Ngnor the lead actor. I think he it would have been better if he was awarded for the Best Actor in Leading Role. I don't think screen time really matters all the time to determine who the lead actor is. We all knew Bruce Lee was the lead actor in Enter the Dragon, but his screen time was only have of the film's running time.

  • I'm surprised that he was considered a supporting actor. It seems to me that he and Waterston were both lead actors in that film.

  • "I wouldn't trust any communist country." - Dr. Haing S. Ngor.

  • This Oscar was his Kama, as Dr. Ngor embodies the kind of human spirit that trancends all evil this world has seen and will see in the future. He will go on to live forever in the hearts of the people whom he touched.

  • Miyagi!!!

  • I am so happy for Haing. He truly deserved the award.

  • R.I.P Haing S. Ngor

  • linda should have gotten mister stickman's musical cue to move along!

  • @VTMCompany

This man lived through and escaped the killings from cambodia.he deserves to tell not only his story but all the cambodians out there that went through the a horrifying genocide!!! you need to give some respect and waTCH WAT YOU SAY!!! Khmer pride bitch wat you know bout that

  • @milliet08

Listen to the way you talk. do you think Dith Pran would like the way you're talking all ghetto and shit?

  • @milliet08

The concept of Khmer pride is what lead to the killing fields in the first place...

  • THE ASIAN COMMUNITY IS SO PROUD OF YOU SIR!!! R.I.P

  • Rest in Power Dr Haing Somnang Ngor

    True Khmer Spirit

  • He deserved it... Fantastic in the film.

  • It would have been cool if Pat Morita won.

  • great performance, he deserved it, moving movie

  • He made me proud to be Khmer :D

  • try 25 years

  • pat morita you are the win

  • Wow 26 Wins 3 Of Them Oscars And 18 Nominations

  • HAING S NGOR IS A GENIUS, HE IS A REAL SURVIVOR, HE IS THE BEST.

    R.I.P

  • HE DESERVED!

  • I salute you Mr. Ngor. People like you make me proud being an asian too..

  • That is inspiration there, I saw the film, read the story in People magazine, long before the Internet. I missed this, but he also appeared on Miami Vice, a very good role too, before he passed away

  • I still think Pat should've won

  • RIP Haing.

For those who don't know, Haing was murdered. He refused to hand over a locket containing a picture of his wife who was killed by the Khmer Rouge

  • this is how casting in films should ALWAYS be - people who fit the part and come from similar backgrounds who have passion for the piece, not a-list celebrities in makeup.

  • @artmania1990 well said, very well said

  • Looks like u can do better than him jackass,u don even have chance to take place in it.

  • Looks like u can do better than him jackass,u don even have chance to take place in it.

  • Looks like u can do better than him jackass,u don even have chance to take place in it.

  • He such a great man shouldn't have died that way.

  • i do the same, it so sad

  • i cry every time i watch killing fields. its not a movie...its a heartbreaking experience

  • "The Killing fields" is one of the best movie ever made. Moreover, the only one depicting the cambodian genocide. If you want to read a great book, I encourage you all to grab "A cambodian odyssey" written by Haing Ngor himself. A great man, and I wish they did a movie about his dramatic life.

  • It's one of the most poignant stories ever and direction, photography and cast was just unbelievable. Hats down!

  • Ngor was gone, Dith Pran was gone too, but the film will remain as one of the best forever.

  • I remember the new that he got killed outside his apartment.

He was gone, Dith Pran was gone too, but the film will remain as one of the best forever.

  • I remeber the news that he got killed outside his apartment.

He was gone, DIth Pran was gone, but the film will remain as one of the best forever.

  • Linda Hunt has so much grace and class when she speaks.

  • Linda Hunt! What a perfromance in Year of Living Dangerously! Haing S. Ngor - what a man! Heatbreakingly tragic end to his amazing life story. Guess the message to learn from his life, and his untimely death, is make each day count...

  • He got Murdered at his Cali. Home.

He will always be remembered in our Cambodian society.

    R.I.P Haing S. Ngor

  • How did he die?

  • Homicide. He was shot outside his home.

  • Murdered by a gang for his Rolex.

  • drive by shooting

  • Got popped by some crackheads in LA who tried to rob him. They asked for his watch which he gave, and then they demanded the gold locket which contained a picture of his wife Huoy who died under the Khymer Rouge. He refused.

    RIP

  • @JakeTheTheSnakePatel Asian gang or not, they have to live with their actions, and be judged by their maker ultimately. So sad, after that tremendous struggle, and final elation with his acting triumph

  • Haing Ngor was murdered in LA by some asian gang members.

  • @MONTARE9 He was shot to death outside his home by a gang called Oriental Lazy Boyz back in 1996.

  • Some said it was a hit. What do you think about it ?

  • Damn, if karate kid was out a year later we could have had back to back asian winners. bleh.

  • I love Dr. Ngor. He is my hero and his legacy will never be forgotten. "The Killing Fields" is a brilliant film, and he represents heroism in its truest form. God bless you sir.

  • im sorry sir he died years ago! fyi

  • @filmmaker991 You and I both. I have loved and admired him since I first saw this move. His autobiography "A Cambodian Odyssey" is a must for fans of his. So, so powerful

  • Pat Morita! I love Mr. Miyagi-san. Wax on, wax off!

  • master miyagi you are the winner

  • respect

    Dr. Ngor

    rip

  • When Ngor initially was offered the role, he didn't want to take the role, but he remembered what his wife told him: "Tell the story of Cambodia." Just before the Khmer Rouge allowed her to die in childbirth. I can't begin to fathom how well-deserved this award is, RIP Dr. Ngor

  • @KOHF34

Right - I agree, but where do you have the information of this. I would like to know.

  • hu is the lady at the start of the video?

  • Linda Hunt

  • Linda Hunt.....................great actress

  • gone too soon...

  • dr. haing ngor was a very good in the killing fieds. too bad, he died to soon.

  • Ngor was a leading role.Very deserved oscar anyway.THE KILLING FIELDS is one of my favourite movies.

  • Pat should have got it

  • It was a little funny how Sam Waterston wouldn't let Mr Ngor go, he just kept talking. I wonder what he was saying? 'Remember to thank me thank me thank me!' :)

Just kidding, of course. Waterston was very happy for his co-star. RIP.

  • Ngor was trying to get Sam to come up with him.

  • Yeah It was the story of Dith Prahn not the Australian Journalist!!!

  • Watch "Dith Pran" try to bring "Jack McCoy" up on stage with him, its funny, but the speech was real serious.

  • i would give my life to bring this guy back to life.

  • You sure about that?

    (in response to sufoodse)

  • RIP sir.

That said, Dith Pran was not a supporting role. It was a lead role.

  • Haing Ngor was an amazing human being. I really admire his passion, dedication to others and his great courage. I furthermore appreciate Ngor for being honest about his short-comings in his powerful autobiography. This text shows Ngor's high intelligence and deep analyses of society and human behaviour.

  • Dr. Ngor, rest in peace, sir. Thank you for all the beautiful things in your work you left through the years.

  • Rest in peace Haing S. Ngor :C

  • He died the day i was born

  • pat morita is fucking cool

  • pretty bad ass to have 2 asian actors in the same categories.. When the fuck does that ever happened, and that was 15 years ago...

  • @samuraiyao

    LMAO!!! Hahaha

  • 1984 is 25 or 26 years ago

  • @samuraiyao Even at the time you wrote that it was much more than 15 years ago. It was over 25 years ago.

  • @samuraiyao Learn to count dipshit. It was 26 years ago

  • he totally shot in los angeles in 1996 1940-1996

  • yay Cambodian

  • lovely person, is he still alive?

  • No. He was killed in LA in 2000. I'm not sure of the circumstances.

  • He was murdered. I bet he was shot to death.

  • He was killed during a robbery. Very sad.

  • He was killed in 1996 by a chinese gang in China Town, LA. :-(

  • He said "Victory for Cambodia" at the end. You made your country proud Mr. Ngor

  • may he rest in peace but this is my view on things:

    a) he should have got best actor nomination, not best supporting actor. maybe the academy wanted both abraham and ngor to win awards

    b) morita should have won this award. he was a joy to watch in the karate kid and most people quote his lines. what's not funny about "wax on, wax off"

  • I agree with you. He should have been nominated & won Best Actor. I'm still proud of him and his accomplishment. May he rest in peace.

  • I bet he was glad to win Supporting rather than lose Best Actor

  • It's like his number was up; but the man upstairs decided that Haing should survive the killing fields to tell his harrowing story to the world; after all that he survived; his life was taken from him by punk kids. How ironic and sad.

  • Comment removed

  • I think his role is The Killing Fields was actually a lead role since he was present for most of the film.

  • After his death, a relative went into his apartement to clear his things. She found the gold had been rubbed off the oscar because he held it so much. This movie and award must have ment alot to him. Rest in Peace.

  • RIP.....I remember hearing of his murder by a bunch of young teenagers and was speachless

  • Yes, rest well Mr Ngor, it is unherd of that a person can live though something like that, then actually act it out in a movie

  • How gracious is he. What a wonderful speech.

  • Nice...

  • This guy is awesome

    R.I.P. Haing S. Ngor

  • rest in peace Dr. Ngor

  • RIP. You are in inspiration to us all.

  • Oh God, if I was one of the nominees I would be like "Shut the fuck up bitch, just get on with it", so rehearsed and pathetic.

  • Sorry Legend

  • What a Lengend

  • very deserving of the award watch the killing fields and very sad but true, good performance

  • I loved his book and I wish I could watch the movie. I'm proud to say that I am of cambodian descent and whats kinda creepy is that he looks like my dad and uncle combined and he speaks like my uncle too. Haing S Ngor is my hero.

  • Go to the video store and rent it.

  • this man is a true hero.

  • my dad knows him!

he has a picture with him and the oscar

and he was in the killing fields

  • really???? he is one of my all time heroes ever!!!!!!!

I cried so much when he died...and when Dith Pran just died....

  • did you hear at the end he said jayo kampuchea!

  • What does it mean?

  • Muy bien merecido premio por su fantastica actuacion en the Killing fields.

    Que descanse en paz..

  • I just finished reading his book about a week ago and finally got to watch the Killing Fields tonight. This man lived through horrors most of us could probably never possibly imagine. Yet he shared his story and the story of Cambodia that needed to be told to the world through this movie and his book. I suggest that every person should take the time to watch/read these accounts. Ngor deserves every ounce of this award. May he rest in piece.

  • fuck the world and its policy why cant people see art and life apart

  • A unique cinematic testamony starring Haing S. Ngor who had to suffer from the Red Khmer regime. I was really stunned when i learned that he was killed by gang members in L.A. back in 1996. I got no words for that.

May Haing S. Ngor, Dith Pran and all the victims rest in peace

    You will never be forgotten
