its unfortunate for the little rabbit, but, thats what these dogs do. its their nature. can you really keep them from doing what they instinctively know? training may slow that instinct down but not gone. But on the side note. I wouldn't let my boys practice that.
@djtabz They're terriers and yes, that's what they were bred to do, however, a well trained dog is taught to control those instincts. Anyone that says different, doesn't know much about dog behavior or dog psychology.
I have 3 terriers and NEVER allow them to chase or kill any other animals its sheer and utter carelessness and stupidity, It teaches them to go for smal fast moving objects. LIKE CHILDREN! I detest irresponsible dog owners that get us all a bad name
@surleyguru as a responsible owner of fox terriers I never allow my dogs to chase or hunt any animals it is sheer foolishness and encourages them to stalk and jump on small fast moving animals which in turn has caused dogs to attack small children for gods sakes everyone knows that.
Our 2 cairns and 2 cats are also one pack aswell. They even sleep together;), but when the cats start to run for one reason or another their instinct kick's in and they will chase them around.
But our cairns are not quick enough to catch an adult rabbit.
I understand what they were bred for, however, it's not 'what Cairns do' unless they're allowed to.
Mine was a rescue and had a very strong chase instinct. In the beginning all he wanted to do was hurt my cats and any small animal. With patience and training they're all one pack now. My Cairn no longer chases any of the rabbits in the garden or squirrels.. he simply ignores them. Any dog with proper training can become well balanced and learn not to chase/kill. Just my 2 cents.
@surleyguru You can't train the instinct out of a dog, but you can teach them self control and how to curb that instinct. My Cairn is proof of that. When I adopted him three years ago, he hated cats and small animals. It took work, consistency, and patience, but now he never met a cat he doesn't like.
@surleyguru As far as small animals, I live in a rural area and we come across rabbits all the time.Sure he'd like to chase them, BUT he's trained not to and will sit there passively and watch them. So please don't tell me you can't train a dog to go against their natural instincts.
Your mindset about dogs and dog behavior speaks volumes of your character.
My female cairn (Suki) did that. It's sad, but it is their instinct, so there's not much you can do about it, is there? I've had 4 cairns, and she's the first one to have actually killed anything, and she's done it twice! The other one was a baby squirrel.
my moms male carin always trys he almost has a few times but someday he will and i tell my mom he will shes like poor squirrel but she knows thats what they are bred for
I don't have a problem with your dogs doing this but why did you put it on the internet.

@djtabz itmight have been their nature living in the wild but they are not living a natural life and should not be allowed to do this

@AnimalRightsUnited Prey drive is reserved for small animals. Animal aggression and human aggression are not at all linked.

@AnimalRightsUnited No only uneducated folks think that. A dog sees a small animal and a child completely different, damn everyone should know that.

thats what terriers do
terrier means ratter
gacysdad 2 years ago
Actually, the name refers to their use as hunting dogs in burrows and dens. Terrier comes from the word terra = earth.
