Herpetologists get bitten all the time, lack faith, and rarely die. Elephantear1: I fear you confuse stupidity with faith. in 20% of bites no venom is injected. US snakes can be lethal but usually are not. On the other hand you never see snake handlers like this using the most lethal snakes in the world. Why not?
What about the other 80% If you or me tried it we would be in the 80%. They may not be the most lethal in the world but they are the most lethal we have. The same GOD that keeps them from dieing from a rattlesnake bite would keep them no matter what kind it was. My daughter was bitten by a cottonmouth 37 inches long and GOD healed her instantly!!
Most US snake bites, without faith, are not lethal. There are no snake handling nuts where the snakes are really lethal. That tells you a lot. Any bite where venom is not injected, which is often the case for large "prey" would leave two bite marks and little else. I had an atheist friend bite by a puff adder and he survived easily. They won't try with vipers, mambas and the really deadly snakes. Your level of "miracle" is rather low.

I'm a new christian and I have not read everything in the bible, but what I have read makes it pretty clear that humans and serpents are not on good terms. Doesn't the entire thoery behind this practice fall under putting god to the test? I'm refering to the books involving the temptation of Jesus.

At Pentecost believers were given the ability to speak in many different languages so that people visiting from around the Roman world could here God's word in their native languages....Nelson's Bible commentary. When someone brings up the "validity" of th spiritual gift of being able to speak in tongues I immediately think of Gnosticism. Gnostic's felt they had some inside knowledge.

You need to give up your bitterness and forgive whoever caused you to have such a negative atitude against God's people. What one person, or one church does, should not bring all into account, we are judged individually. Just as you want to be sir.

sad to say that most Biblical scholars have recognized that the ending passage in Mark 16 never appeared in the original texts, they are later additions (most likely expounding on examples like Paul in Acts). The earliest known manuscripts do not contain verses 9 through the end. Read the footnotes in any Bible in the Bookshelf about Mark 16. Not to mention the whole "don't put the Lord your God to a foolish test"

The bible speaks for itself. This passage gives account of things that happen to occur, as in; "even if they handled serpents". The biblical example of this is in Act 28:3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
It was not Paul's intention to handle the snake, or viper, it just happened, and the power of the Holy Ghost was there to protect him & he shook it off.

The only way to prove God exists is within believers by total faith that the living God lives in all that was, is and to what becomes. What is not widely known is that St Mark ended his Gospel at Verse 8 of Chapter 16. From the docs I've seen, these people usually have to kind of "hide out" from law enforcement. But the police kind of turn their heads at it unless there's an incident (snake bite). These old-time pentecostals don't believe in going to court and suing people, so the risk of a lawsuit is minimal.

i assume you were taught not tought. And these are ignorant clowns. No faith is involved. Most those snakes wouldn't kill an adult if they were bit. And get bit a few times and immunity builds up. They never take up serpents that are sure to kill with one bite.

Herpetologists get bitten all the time, lack faith, and rarely die. Elephantear1: I fear you confuse stupidity with faith. in 20% of bites no venom is injected. US snakes can be lethal but usually are not. On the other hand you never see snake handlers like this using the most lethal snakes in the world. Why not?

What about the other 80% If you or me tried it we would be in the 80%. They may not be the most lethal in the world but they are the most lethal we have. The same GOD that keeps them from dieing from a rattlesnake bite would keep them no matter what kind it was. My daughter was bitten by a cottonmouth 37 inches long and GOD healed her instantly!!

Most US snake bites, without faith, are not lethal. There are no snake handling nuts where the snakes are really lethal. That tells you a lot. Any bite where venom is not injected, which is often the case for large "prey" would leave two bite marks and little else. I had an atheist friend bite by a puff adder and he survived easily. They won't try with vipers, mambas and the really deadly snakes. Your level of "miracle" is rather low.

esteemnz: surely you would not mind meeting me there and you could handle one of their "harmless" snakes. just let me know the time and place. when my daughter was bitten her foot was swelling and she was crying and saying that it hurt worse than anything she had ever had before. also her foot was turning real red, and there was lumps under each bite mark.

You intentionally misrepresent what I said, but then that happens with the faith infested all the time. I never said they were "harmless". What I said is that most bites don't lead to death. And they don't. You now contradict yourself. YOu said your daughter was instantly healed now you describe symptoms.

You have never had it happen to you, so you dont understand. But the symptoms where all there. The pain, the swelling, the lumps under the fang marks. But mostly she was almost screaming in pain. Then we prayed. And then God healed her instantly. You must sure be a dummy, hard to explain things to you.

I'm a new christian and I have not read everything in the bible, but what I have read makes it pretty clear that humans and serpents are not on good terms. Doesn't the entire thoery behind this practice fall under putting god to the test? I'm refering to the books involving the temptation of Jesus.

Look , God also tells us to put on His full armour but we don't wear a metel suit to work every day. It's more : read your Bible and know the truth of the Gospel in order to face every day life which is filled with "deadly stuff ".Mark 16:15 -18 Is the Great Comm. which probably talks of missionaries going into dangerous(communist/muslim..etc) places praying for people and God healing them. I don't think it's speaking of a cobra or black mamba.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say they are cults but they are definitely NOT accomplishing the great commission by telling people they have to pick up a "viper". Even a Rattler. These folks must put these snakes in the icebox a couple of hours before they start the "show". This stuff is as misinterpreted as "talking in tounges". At Pentecost the disciples spoke to the many different people in their languages not some "sham-a-lama-ding-dong" mystery voice.

I heard somewhere that in many cases, the snakes are made less agressive by keeping them in sacks, without water, and in cold temperature for days prior to a service.

@couches12 The Greek term "GLOSSO" means tongues or languages. At Pentecost believers were given the ability to speak in many different languages so that people visiting from around the Roman world could here God's word in their native languages....Nelson's Bible commentary. When someone brings up the "validity" of th spiritual gift of being able to speak in tongues I immediately think of Gnosticism. Gnostic's felt they had some inside knowledge.

But what kind of poisons are they drinking, hemlock, sodium/potassium cyanide, d-Con, Zyklon B, sewer water? Or is it watered down rat poison? It has been reported numerous deaths in some of these churches where some parishioners have been bitten by the deadly serpent, "because they weren't walking with the Lord."
Does that make a believer less of a true Christian because they choose not to play with rattlers and suck down ichy poison?

sad to say that most Biblical scholars have recognized that the ending passage in Mark 16 never appeared in the original texts, they are later additions (most likely expounding on examples like Paul in Acts). The earliest known manuscripts do not contain verses 9 through the end. Read the footnotes in any Bible in the Bookshelf about Mark 16. Not to mention the whole "don't put the Lord your God to a foolish test"

I give them credit. They're trying to follow the Bible to the letter, while the cheesy Pentecostals, who know that their "tongues" and unprovable miracles are fake, disregard the words about drinking poison and handling snakes because they know they'd die.

This is an error.
The bible speaks for itself. This passage gives account of things that happen to occur, as in; "even if they handled serpents". The biblical example of this is in Act 28:3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
It was not Paul's intention to handle the snake, or viper, it just happened, and the power of the Holy Ghost was there to protect him & he shook it off.

Firstly we are not xians. We are Christians. That is believers in Christ. The New Testament Church is our model, and the Bible is our preamble. I have no choice but to imitate what is given there.
And if they shall drink any deadly thing: no drano needed, but one of our missionaries did drink poison that was given to him by tribal witch doctors in order to disprove what he believe. He lives until this day.

Our belief comes from mark 16:18..not acts..and if our beliefs are so wrong and rediculous, why is it still a matter? why not just leave it at that? something thats is thought of as being so rediculous, sure gets alot of publicity..when not intended..no offense..if you saw it in person, you would be just as strong as a believer as i am..in person its not just seeing it..theres a feeling that can not be denied that goes along with it..god bless u and urs.

raver, no one can prove that God exists and others can't prove that he doesn't exist. The only way to prove God exists is within believers by total faith that the living God lives in all that was, is and to what becomes. You can see His existence in people's lives if you really try and search for HIM through His only Son Jesus Christ. Seek and Ye shall find. He lives in His Word, the Holy Bible.

What is not widely known is that St Mark ended his Gospel at Verse 8 of Chapter 16. The remainder of it, including the verse on which the snake handlers base their ritual, was tacked on later and its provenance is highly doubtful. Therefore these unfortunate people are putting themselves in grave danger, all for a second-hand passage of scripture that does not rightly belong in the Gospels at all! Check the footnote to verse 18 in your Bibles, folks!

Not all pentecostals are snake handlers!I'm Pentecostal and I personally think that those people are stupid.I think its great that they have complete freedom in worship.But there is a verse in the Bible that says thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God!By purposely putting themselves in danger,these people are testing God.He is not someone to be tested.He is definitely someone to be trusted.But that doesnt mean you should go out looking for trouble! Oh and by the way, PENTECOSTALISM IS NOT A CULT!

How can you be tempting God, when you are doing exactly what He said to do Mark 16:18 so do you think it is tempting God to pray, that also is just doing what He said to do. the word shall is a powerful word. Jesus if you believe in Him you shall take up serpents. He also said all unbelief has it's place in the lake that burns with fire. It is not tempting God! They dont take up serpents to test God, they already know God is there and will not let harm come to them. They dont do it in themselves anyhow, to take up a serpent you must have the Holy Ghost, the spirit of God, which will guide you, it indicates when to take up serpents...The reason people get bit, is moving too fast, too slow, or at the wrong time when the Holy Ghost moves upon them...

From the docs I've seen, these people usually have to kind of "hide out" from law enforcement. But the police kind of turn their heads at it unless there's an incident (snake bite). These old-time pentecostals don't believe in going to court and suing people, so the risk of a lawsuit is minimal.

I know some old timers like that, although different religion, but I see your point. I dont believe in most of what passes for suit either, but there are some legitemate reasons to sue. I think if they were active recruiters, it might be more common, since whole families may not be involved, but as it is, theyre probly family held practices, so yeah, the chances are nihl.

As you know, most just shrug it off as BS or allegory, but still have the nerve to call themselves fundamentalist, bible-believing christians. I think all people who profess faith in Jesus should take up the serpent; either put up or shut up!

C'mon man ! Jesus called the jewish leaders a "Brood of Vipers" . So in giving the 11 disciples the Great Commission he was saying your gonna have to deal w/ these people-which they did and died. This might be totally off the mark(no pun intended) It also say's in the Bible if someone asks you for some bread you wouldn't give him a snake or something to that effect...How can you win people to the Lord by expecting them to handle rattlrs.
