as both a violinist and a cellist I can say that really both parts are equally important. I play cello in my high school orchestra for 6 years and violin in the local college orchestra for 4 years and really, the parts of symphonies and things with violin section solos sound bare and hollow in comparison to the layer of bass instruments that usuallly are there.

It's funny. Cellos never get solos in ANYTHING. I know. I've been playing in a school orchestra for 6 years. I was taught that cellos exist to provide a deep background layer and keep the beat so that the MOTHERF*CKING VIOLINS can look good. But I REALLY pity the bass players. They never even get anything interesting.

I never get that playing my sax as a horn substitute. mostly I get a discordant variation of the melody (or maybe it's just how I play it lol). I'd love a good harmony/countermelody sometime. I was excited when I got half a riff from charlie and the chocolate factory. But it was so weird practising to play Star Wars. I got a squeaky, out of key version of the darth vader theme that didn't make sense alone.

I loved playing the Double bass... and I really didn't mind not getting solos, hearing those rumbling notes, sometimes feeling them more than hearing them ... it was the best. The violins can have their solos, they need the bass, with it's rich undertones that help counteract the violins more piercing pitch. The bass was the best. And don't ever say we didn't get anything interesting, the bass' harmonies and melodies are often the most beautiful of the group,
