hi Millie! Loved your video and method. We have an 8 month old ragdoll cat named Mars. He is leash trained and loves us a lot! We have recently moved aboard a 42 foot sailboat and have two heads...one of which I plan to designate as Mars' toilet. Do you think this will work?
The delicate nature of the holding tanks and the fear of getting litter in there has us a little concerned. Thanks. Jan and Orrin
So my cat, charlie, adapted to the litter bowl right away( he used it the second I put it into the toilet) but now that we are on stage two, he has been holding it for a long time. Any tricks to help him feel comfortable going into the hole?
@MissB2TheLynn Two things that have helped others ... check to make sure the platform is really sturdy, no squeeks or wobbles, next fill the litter bowl up VERY HIGH so that it is a short distance to reach the litter. Good luck!
@PawTheFox ... some cats readily use the other toilets in the house or on a road trip. While others seem to only "recognize" the initial training toilet as their "litter box". Miss Millie uses two bathrooms in our house with a preference for the first one that she initially transitioned with.
@CoolKarma one additional note on my post below: I believe our platform is quite sturdy. It doesn't squeak or wobble. It holds her weight. She's comfortable sitting on the platform and playing with the litter through the hole for quite a while.
@CoolKarma Great vid. We're beginning phase 2 with our 5-month-old kitten. She's gone #1 and #2 once each in the hole, but most of the time she holds it for a long while. After about 12 hours we break down and take the platform off. Then she goes right away in the bowl as if back to phase 1. She pooped behind our tub once during this phase. And she's given us signs she needs to go to (successfully) coax us to remove the platform. Could you offer advice for mastering phase 2?
@jessyoakum ... You may want to try making the hole a bit bigger but not so large as the young kitty can fit her whole body inside of it. We put empty plastic bottles around the floor to discourage accidents. If kitty doesn't mind you in the room while she does her business, you may want to just sit with her when you know she has to "go" and give her lots of verbal encouragement. Ready with a cat treat when she sucessfully uses the platform.

Hellooo! So i've been trying to get my cat to use the toilet for months! She will pee in the water, but she wont poop. She will poop in the basement where she used to go...except it's all on the carpet. My plan was to cut her off from the basement and let her know she's not allowed to poop downstairs. What do I do? She will poop if there's just litter, but whenever there's water she wont go poop. Help!
maybe youve already answerd this question but i wanna know if i need to remove the toiletbox when i get started. i already dit cartonpaper with a whole above the toilet with a box fulled with littr. do i need to wait before i take his toiletbox away? or is the change big that when i do that he's going poo everywhere
I went to goodwill and bought a baby (human) toilet that fits into the top of the toilet. I filled the hole the toddler sits on with litter and my cat is using it just fine, the only problem I am having so far is that I can't seem to take the litter out, and add water. My
Cat would rather hold it then just go in the water. I know he knows what to do, he just won't do it. I am having to slip the bowl out right before he goes everytime, so he will get used to going in the water. But I can't stand
HI.. so my cat is at the small hole in the center of toilet bowl stage... he peed in it yesterday, but he won't (yet) go #2 there... today he looked in stuck his paw there and then ended getting frantic for a while, he then finally did in the bathtub. I didn't get mad at him, just cleaned up and now am wondering what you suggest is the best course from here. I have still a good layer of litter in the bowl, so it'll be a few more days at least for me to decrease and get to the water stage. thx!
I'm trying to get rid of the litter completely and replace with water:
We've tried this before, but our cat would stick his head in the platform and start drinking the water. I sprinkled some litter in the water so that he would stop, but it didn't work. He freaks out when his paws get wet.
How do I go from a spoonful of litter, to the water stage? How do I convince my kitten that it okay to go the bathroom in the water, and he doesn't have to stick his paw in at all?
@oriolio -- some folks report success with an intermediate "dry stage". Instead of adding water straight away once the little is gone. Try having just the "dry bowl" for a few days. If that goes well, you can start adding a scant amount of water and gradually increase until you are ready to remove the bowl.
As for sticking a paw in the water ...that seems to be a "personal preference" for the cat. Millie does it occasionally. Not very often any more.
@CoolKarmaVideo That's a great idea! I'm going to try the 'dry bowl' method! Maybe that will teach him that he does not need to scratch at anything or stick his paw in there at all... Wish me luck! :)
I found my cat "Marbles" outside and rescued her @ 3 or 4 months old. I started the toilet training, with the help of this video, right away. We are almost there and she's done everything right so far.
I'm stuck in the transition from litter to dry. My cat will save his pee and poo until night time when I'm sleeping. And he will pee in the bowl, but the problem is, he won't poop OR pee in the bowl if its already dirty. Since I'm asleep I can't clean the bowl.... He just poops in the shower. It is getting on my last nerves.
Should I feed him less water?
Also, he seems to pee fine when there is "a scant spoonful of litter" but won't poop unless there's "a whole bunch of litter." Help please?
@eskabarz90 We took an indoor cat who had been able to use the toilet fow many years and made him an outdoor cat. If he ever happens to be inside and gets locked in, he will GO in the bathtub (it's been many years since he used the toilet). If ours was smart enough to do that after YEARS, I'm sure you could train the cat to use 2.
i'm in need of some help! the training process has gone well so far... until adding the cardboard with the hole. my cat will attempt to pee through the hole, but doesn't seem to grasp the concept of pooping through the hole. i went ahead and removed the cardboard.. any suggestions to help the transition again?
@KFH69 -- Cats under four months of age may be too young to have the coordination to balance up on the toilet seat. It may take a young cat longer also to feel comfortable at each stage. Congratulations on your new kitten and good luck with the training if you decide to do that down the line.
Question! How gradually shout you decrease the amount of litter in the bowl? She went #1 in there fine, and then went #2 as well but a lot of if got on the floor. Then i checked today and she made both #1 and #2 inside the bowl. How long should I wait before taking the litter away and filling it with water? Is it too early? She hasn't made a single accident, except for going #2 on the platform a little.
@triggergirl123 -- we just didn't fill the litter back up as we scooped and discarded. When the litter was all done, we had a dry bowl for a couple of days and then gradually started filling with water. Good luck!
my cat is a 1 year old cat. he does #2 in a hole, but he doesen't cover it properly. his older brother tried to teach him, my youngest doesn't bother. will it still stink?
Shes on the green ring at the moment she urinates no problem into the pan its the soiling she has difficulties using the green ring with as she mastered it on the amber ring watch?v=Ef7i5HteIdo
my 9 weeks kitten now in the stage where he is doing #1 in the hole, but he is doing #2 outside next to the toilet, he have done it once when he was in the bathroom, he is holding it for too long, I didnt have any issues before with him, since i switched to water after 2 week he started not doing #2 in there, he is extremly smart, and when he wants to do it he would start to cry to make sure i know what he wants, i used to help him by holding him there and trying to be a good mommy, help please
How do I get my kitten to want to use the 'litter bowl'?
I have a 4.5 month old kitten. I've had a stainless steel bowl with cat litter sitting in my toilet for four days. I know he has been curious and jumped up there because I found little pieces of litter on the seat, (he was always curious of the toilet). So far he hasn't peed or pooped in there. I still have his other litter box available in the bathroom because I don't want him to have any accidents. Is this slowing his progress?
@iLOVEcandy517 -- kittens? We've heard positive feedback from folks with cats as young a 6 months. And some have started training at 4 months of age. But it seems that for the very young kitties the required balance and patience just isn't there yet.
i trained my 1yo old using a couple of aluminum roasting pans (instead of the steel bowls) and he learned over 2 months. no accidents since then. his brothers were taught even earlier.
Thank you for posting this. I have 3 cats that I am in the process of training. It's been a couple of days and they are all doing both #1 and #2 in the bowl. Today I placed a 'platter' over the bowl with a hole in it and put some litter on it. None of the cats used the toilet for several hours. They were fascinated with the hole. They kept trying to stick their paws down the hole. Fearing they would have an accident, I went back to the litter filled bowl. Can you offer any advice? Tks
@freddieandme -- make sure the litter is VERY HIGH in the bowl, so that your cats can easily get a paw in and touch the litter. Also if the platter has any squeeks or wabbles it may frigthem them. Kitties need to feel very safe on the platform. Good luck.
@CoolKarmaVideo Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to fill the bowl up. After a 24 hr stand-off, one cat had an accident. One went on the platter (pooped 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the hole - I have no idea which cat this was) and the other cat peed almost entirely in the hole. 'Accident cat' peed straight in the hole when I placed her on the 'platter' after her accident. I was lucky to catch her right after she pooped on my carpet. See my videos if you can of my set up
@CoolKarmaVideo Thanks again. I filled the bowl all the way to the top and even added litter to the platter. The cats gave up and each one pooped & peed on the platter near the hole (one of them actually peed right into the covered 'hole'. Thanks so much for your fast reply. I am very dedicated in getting my cats toilet trained. All good wishes to you & thanks, too for your website.
I would pay someone to train my boys to do this as I dont have the time or patience. But I have on question, what do ya do if your gone for any length of time, keep the door shut on the bathroom?,but then your cat reverts back to using the litter box. Maybe I will just let them do what comes natural, I mean it's awesome if your kitty can do this but alas I think the kitty's who can do this are few and far between. You have a nice vid here, very helpful, thanx! ~Yara
@themarcusxavier -- we've heard from folks who've used plastic bowls, salad strainers and other adaptaphones. Important thing is the the bowl is snug and sturdy to support the weight of your cat.
my cat does her #1 in the stage 2 with the whole, but she doesnt do her #2, she keeps her #2s in and the eventually does it on the ground next to the toilet at the end of the night. what can I do to make her do both her #1 and #2 :S
@s2berry Check my website listed here under video and go to the page for FAQ for tips on how to discourage accidents. Also make sure your platform is really sturdy. No squeeks or wobbles. If kitty doesn't feel safe, she may not be able to settle enough to do her business. Good luck!
@CoolKarmaVideo I'm in the "dry stage" and my cat won't go #2 in the toilet, is there anything I can do? It is really starting to get extremely frustrating. I put a bit of litter back in the bowl for now..
@s2berry -- accidents are common, check my website for some tips on how these can be minimized. (under FAQ) Also make sure the platform has no squeeks or wabbles and that the litter is filled very high so that cat can still reach a paw in and touch it.
@s2berry i think with #2 it requires a different stance for them which is slightly more precarious and so it's a little harder to convince them to do it. for a while my cat was doing it over the side of the toilet instead of inside. it just took a couple of times of embarrassing him in the act and now he's fine
@Tillymunson -- It depends on the cat. Some can pick up a new stage in a matter of days, while others need a few weeks before they can comfortably move on. The important thing seems to be making sure your cat is comfortable before you introduce a new stage.
Thanks for this. But can you advise...can this type of training be done with older cats? I have a four, three and nearly two year old cat...any chance they can learn?
Thank you so much for help. We finally got our kitty to be potty trained but not 100%. Do you have any tips for: 1. She keeps pooping on the floor NEXT to the toilet? 2. Also, a few times now, she jumps to the sink to pee.
She's been peeing in the toilet (mostly) for 2 months but pooping, we have to be next 2her 2 help her.
@s2berry Hi s2berry! no ... please coolkarma.. please give us some tips.. please let me know if u find anything also. she keeps pooping next to the toilet. i dont understand it.
Hi! i've tried this method with my cat an have reached the step where you remove all the litter from the bowl, BUT HE JUST WON'T GO No 2 IN THERE! I've tried with litter on the side of the toilet, i've tried showing him over and over (the bowl is always clean) but he just doesn't want to. He goes in the shower... What should I do to convince him?
You just made my girlfriend a very happy lady. She can't have cats in her apartment, and I can. She claims that she'll take care of it and do all of the disgusting things that I can't stand, but we all know how that is going to go. Even with this technique, I'll end up dealing with 3 AM puke while sleeping beauty snores.
Thank you verrrrrry verrrrrrry much!!! Because I absolutely hate litter box and I don't have cat because of it (and quality litter is very expensive). But now I am so happy that I found your video. Thank you again :)
for the kitty to flush try a bit of sand paper on the handle.
Another good bit of information is that if you use this technique switch to a bio degradable kitty litter substitute in case you get some spill over from the cat at first (its still not safe to dump a whole lot because it still clumps) but in smaller amounts it won't be as bad for your plumming a common brand is "Sweat" it uses wheat. just a little side tip for those who use this method.
My cat already likes to jump up on the toilet set and even sits on it. I thought he was going to actually go once. I bet it won't be hard at all to get him to do it.
Wow, thanks for posting this! I think that awful unnatural litter may have contributed to my precious cat's eventual demise. That makes me really mad. For sure, all future cats in this household will be potty-trained. At least we'll try :-)
@CoolKarmaVideo Sorry for the late reply, when I first started they were completely missing the hole, and pooping on the side, or even on the floor by my toilet. It was really gross, so I kept making the hole bigger. xD then when I added water they drank it. Either way, I gave up. My bathroom is too small, and I have to use it too. :C I don't like the seat covered in litter. I'm going to try the cat genie, in the future when I have money. (it washes and reuses litter I guess.)
@fdgecrckr -- Toilet training certainly isn't for every cat or every situation! Its so good to realize when its not working out for the two of you. Because maintaining a positive relationship with our cat is so much more important. Enjoy each other! Take care.
Status report. Still training FOUR cats all at once. It is important to WATCH this video and listen to every word CoolKarma says. I am having the hardest time, believe it or not, with our SMARTEST cat. I think it's because he would NEVER go ANYWHERE BUT the box. He almost busted his bladder holding it for almost 24 hours the 1st time we started with the "cut hole" the hole was a 3" diameter and his problem was figuring out how to fit his back feet/butt into the hole! The other 3 cats had no prob
@thefeet So what we have done is we went to a larger size hole so he could fit his butt/back feet down into the hole. NOW what has happened is he has found it to be uncomfortable since his TAIL gets in the way. The hole was JUST big enough that he COULD park his back feet/butt down in the bowl with his front paws on the seat. After a few days he is NOW balancing properly ABOVE the hole and pooping like the other 3 cats had figured out! Our next step is to NOW... go BACK to the smaller hole and
@thefeet with any luck, we can now start lowering the amount of litter and then introduce the "water in the bowl" phase and then slowly increase the size of the hole. You weren't kidding when you said it's gross. I'm used to waking up in the morning and hopping into the shower. Now I must clean up my bathroom cuz I feel like I'm walking into a litterbox each morning... we will prevail!!! FOUR at once.. go as slow as the slowest learner. /shrug
Hi! This is a wonderful video! Thank you for sharing your experience with us! Could you tell me, please, how old should the cat be when you start teaching it? Is it possible to train an old cat? And what about a kitten? I'v got a sweet one, 2 months old, and I've just trained it to use a plastic cat toilet.. But this is a better option! Thank you very much in advance!

Potty training 4, yes FOUR at once here! We can only go as fast as the slowest learner. Patience is the key! Almost a full time job potty training 4 at once. Videos like this are encouraging! Not giving up here until all 4 are trained.
@IdioticFeelings -- how long it takes between each step varies greatly between cats. I've heard people successfully train from start to finish in 1 month. For Millie it was two months total. But there are other people who spend four to six months. In general, it is good not to move to the next stage until the cat is comfortable (no accidents) for a few days. Better to go slow, than to move too fast. Good luck,
@Jantv81 no. kittens drown. they don't have the agility to balance on a SLICK toilet seat until older. But yes, a young cat, conditioned to be using the bathroom as "it's place to go" at an early age will probably adapt to the phases laid out here easier than older cats who have used a litter box for years. But don;t underestimate even OLD cats. Cats are the ONLY animal I know that can adapt quickly to suit their environment. They are SO intelligent! I would wait till your cat is almost fulgrown

I"m so glad I found this video, I have been doing my research and looks like your method works really well. I have been waiting to train my kitties to use the potty until I moved into a house with a half bath that I could devote solely to them. I'm moving June 1st and wonder how long should I wait before I begin training? Also, I have 2 cats; 9months & 3yrs, should I start by moving their litter box into the bathroom? Also, how long does each stage take? Thanks again:)
@alohakele -- It may be a great opportunity to start training right away in your new place. I would certainly start with the litterbox right next to the toilet and then move through the stages as described in the video and on our website.how long it takes between each step varies greatly between cats. I've heard people successfully train from start to finish in 1 month. But there are other people who spend four to six months.

@pinkpanambi -- Good question. Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I'm not an expert in this area. I'd suggest you speak with your Doctor.
The Center for Disease Control has a website with information on preventing Toxoplasmosis.
"The Toxoplasma parasite does not become infectious until 1 to 5 days after it is shed in a cat's feces."
Keeping the litter tray or toilet clean would seem to be a must for any cat owner.

Thank you so much!
oriolio 4 months ago
@oriolio -- some folks report success with an intermediate "dry stage". Instead of adding water straight away once the little is gone. Try having just the "dry bowl" for a few days. If that goes well, you can start adding a scant amount of water and gradually increase until you are ready to remove the bowl.
As for sticking a paw in the water ...that seems to be a "personal preference" for the cat. Millie does it occasionally. Not very often any more.
Good luck.
CoolKarmaVideo 4 months ago
@CoolKarmaVideo That's a great idea! I'm going to try the 'dry bowl' method! Maybe that will teach him that he does not need to scratch at anything or stick his paw in there at all... Wish me luck! :)

I switched from litter box to the littler bowl in the toilet yesterday. My cat has not peed or poop for over 24 hours. Should I be concerned?
amandajoyblake 4 months ago
I'm stuck in the transition from litter to dry. My cat will save his pee and poo until night time when I'm sleeping. And he will pee in the bowl, but the problem is, he won't poop OR pee in the bowl if its already dirty. Since I'm asleep I can't clean the bowl.... He just poops in the shower. It is getting on my last nerves.
Should I feed him less water?
Also, he seems to pee fine when there is "a scant spoonful of litter" but won't poop unless there's "a whole bunch of litter." Help please?

eskabarz90 4 months ago
@eskabarz90 we haven't heard feedback from folks who have successfully trained an outdoor cat. Let us know how it goes!
CoolKarmaVideo 4 months ago
@eskabarz90 We took an indoor cat who had been able to use the toilet fow many years and made him an outdoor cat. If he ever happens to be inside and gets locked in, he will GO in the bathtub (it's been many years since he used the toilet). If ours was smart enough to do that after YEARS, I'm sure you could train the cat to use 2.

i'm in need of some help! the training process has gone well so far... until adding the cardboard with the hole. my cat will attempt to pee through the hole, but doesn't seem to grasp the concept of pooping through the hole. i went ahead and removed the cardboard.. any suggestions to help the transition again?

at what age would be the best for the cat to start toilet training? i just got a 2 months kitten and i duno when i should start training her.. :)
KFH69 5 months ago
@KFH69 -- Cats under four months of age may be too young to have the coordination to balance up on the toilet seat. It may take a young cat longer also to feel comfortable at each stage. Congratulations on your new kitten and good luck with the training if you decide to do that down the line.
CoolKarmaVideo 5 months ago
She hasn't made a single accident, except for going #2 on the platform a little.
triggergirl123 5 months ago
@triggergirl123 -- we just didn't fill the litter back up as we scooped and discarded. When the litter was all done, we had a dry bowl for a couple of days and then gradually started filling with water. Good luck!

CoolKarmaVideo 5 months ago
@iLOVEcandy517
i trained my 1yo old using a couple of aluminum roasting pans (instead of the steel bowls) and he learned over 2 months. no accidents since then. his brothers were taught even earlier.
yinc 5 months ago
Thank you for posting this. I have 3 cats that I am in the process of training. It's been a couple of days and they are all doing both #1 and #2 in the bowl. Today I placed a 'platter' over the bowl with a hole in it and put some litter on it. None of the cats used the toilet for several hours. They were fascinated with the hole. They kept trying to stick their paws down the hole. Fearing they would have an accident, I went back to the litter filled bowl. Can you offer any advice? Tks
freddieandme 5 months ago
@freddieandme -- make sure the litter is VERY HIGH in the bowl, so that your cats can easily get a paw in and touch the litter. Also if the platter has any squeeks or wabbles it may frigthem them. Kitties need to feel very safe on the platform. Good luck.
CoolKarmaVideo 5 months ago
@CoolKarmaVideo Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to fill the bowl up. After a 24 hr stand-off, one cat had an accident. One went on the platter (pooped 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the hole - I have no idea which cat this was) and the other cat peed almost entirely in the hole. 'Accident cat' peed straight in the hole when I placed her on the 'platter' after her accident. I was lucky to catch her right after she pooped on my carpet. See my videos if you can of my set up
freddieandme 5 months ago

Maybe I will just let them do what comes natural, I mean it's awesome if your kitty can do this but alas I think the kitty's who can do this are few and far between. s2berry 6 months ago

I put a bit of litter back in the bowl for now..
xSobhan 5 months ago
@s2berry I'm having the same problem, my cat wont do #2 in the dry stage.
Have you solved that problem yet? I put litter back in it for now but I have no clue what I'm going to do to fix that problem.
xSobhan 5 months ago
@s2berry -- accidents are common, check my website for some tips on how these can be minimized. (under FAQ) Also make sure the platform has no squeeks or wabbles and that the litter is filled very high so that cat can still reach a paw in and touch it.
CoolKarmaVideo 5 months ago
@s2berry i think with #2 it requires a different stance for them which is slightly more precarious and so it's a little harder to convince them to do it. for a while my cat was doing it over the side of the toilet instead of inside. it just took a couple of times of embarrassing him in the act and now he's fine
yinc 5 months ago
How long should each step take on average?
Tillymunson 6 months ago
@Tillymunson -- It depends on the cat. Some can pick up a new stage in a matter of days, while others need a few weeks before they can comfortably move on. The important thing seems to be making sure your cat is comfortable before you introduce a new stage.

Nice post and thanks for the info.
for the kitty to flush try a bit of sand paper on the handle.

The other 3 cats had no prob
thefeet 7 months ago
@thefeet So what we have done is we went to a larger size hole so he could fit his butt/back feet down into the hole. NOW what has happened is he has found it to be uncomfortable since his TAIL gets in the way. The hole was JUST big enough that he COULD park his back feet/butt down in the bowl with his front paws on the seat. After a few days he is NOW balancing properly ABOVE the hole and pooping like the other 3 cats had figured out! Our next step is to NOW... go BACK to the smaller hole and
thefeet 7 months ago
@thefeet with any luck, we can now start lowering the amount of litter and then introduce the "water in the bowl" phase and then slowly increase the size of the hole. You weren't kidding when you said it's gross. I'm used to waking up in the morning and hopping into the shower. Now I must clean up my bathroom cuz I feel like I'm walking into a litterbox each morning... we will prevail!!! FOUR at once.. go as slow as the slowest learner. /shrug

How long does each step aprox. take...?
IdioticFeelings 9 months ago
@IdioticFeelings -- how long it takes between each step varies greatly between cats. I've heard people successfully train from start to finish in 1 month. For Millie it was two months total. But there are other people who spend four to six months. In general, it is good not to move to the next stage until the cat is comfortable (no accidents) for a few days. Better to go slow, than to move too fast. Good luck,
CoolKarmaVideo 9 months ago
@IdioticFeelings I would think starting with a kitten may be best.
Jantv81 8 months ago
@Jantv81 no. kittens drown. they don't have the agility to balance on a SLICK toilet seat until older. But yes, a young cat, conditioned to be using the bathroom as "it's place to go" at an early age will probably adapt to the phases laid out here easier than older cats who have used a litter box for years. But don;t underestimate even OLD cats. Cats are the ONLY animal I know that can adapt quickly to suit their environment. They are SO intelligent! I would wait till your cat is almost fulgrown
