Think I do all of these errors, gah! I soo suck at jumping rope. First try tonight and I could do no more than 10 in a row w/o failing. Jumping so high hurt my knee :( Totally straighten my arms too. I thought I had the right length rope but I think I am wrong. Going to keep at it with these pointers in mind. If only I could levitate so I could master just the rotating the rope part first lol
Hi! Keep practicing! 10 in a row is a great start. Try playing some music with a steady beat (around 130-140 bpm) that you really like and see if you can keep up. Have you check out our ropes? They're adjustable and affordable. Our shop is at punkrope(dot)com. Also we have an instructional DVD coming out soon.
@haft2bfit I will check out your ropes! I have two right now. One is too short using the standard step on the rope and place the handles under your armpits method for adjusting. The other I have is weighted and adjustable. Sometimes it feels like the rope isn't heavy enough, the handles are bu the rope feels light. Love the Punk Rope name btw ... NYC?
We are in NYC, but have classes around the country. The weight in a heavy rope should primarily be in the rope not in the handles. As to sizing a rope, I think we have a video on YouTube as well as in our shop.
@haft2bfit Thanks for all the info on this video and the other. Love your site, really cool stuff! Which rope would you recommend for a beginner? I was thinking the Celtic Thunder Rope because it is in my height range. Plus the colors rock. Love the Creamsicle 14' Long/Double Dutch haha! Super rad. I like the Beast Heavy Rope the best but I think starting out maybe I should shoot for something a bit more simple. Thanks again for all the info and tips!
Thanks for the tips. I have a different problem, through. I keep jumping twice for each rope swing (once when jumping over the rope, and second time when rope is still in the air). I can keep up with this rhythm for a while. The moment I try do to do one jump per rope swing I get tangled up. Please help.
You're doing the famous double bounce. It's very common and not necessarily a bad thing. To get out of the habit you need to practice swing your rope to the side while jumping at a brisk pace...at least 120 jumps per minute. Hopefully that will then carry over to when you jump "through" the rope. Increasing your jumping speed eliminates the problem but it may take you a while to get comfortable with jumping that fast.
@haft2bfit thx for the advice. Indeed I was dropping my hands too much, everything works pretty good now. But its still going to take some time until I can challenge my dad (former boxer) lol
finally i found a video for starters I jumped right into boxing with excess weight horrible nutrition habits and the only thing I can do is jog. I've got a long way to go but I hope jumping rope will help me get to where I want to be.
We hope so too! Go easy at first so you give your calves a chance to adapt to the new stress. See if you improve your nutrition little by little. Good luck! By the way, our Rope Jumping for Maximum Fitness DVD should be out in March.
Now I know where it went wrong when I was younger. I always got frustrated when the rope hit my legs and thought that the rope wasn't good in stead of thinking my 'jumping-skills' weren't done correctly.
every I try to do skipping , I start leaking and cant stop my urge to go to toilet... is this normal or something is wrong with me??? can u pls help me ??? I want to lose weight so I was thinking adding skipping to ma routine...
Trying to get back into it after only jumping as a kid. Have a bad habit of doing a 'half step' between jumps. Any advice on how to break that? BTW...Great videos.
The extra bounce is very common for beginners or folks getting back into jumping. We'll be coming out with an instructional DVD soon (check the Punk Rope site), but for now keep practicing while swinging your rope to the side to break that habit. Try practicing to a song you like that has a steady beat of at least 140 beats per minute. At that speed you have to get rid of the extra bounce. It's not a bad thing though and it will go away eventually. Kind of like training wheels
@haft2bfit That's just what I'm doing, that "half-step" in between jumps: I move the rope slow, but at the same time I kinda try to jump fast, and screw it up very soon. I will keep on practicing it, I have to go slow with both my hands and my feet to get it right and then I guess I will be able to do it at a faster pace.
That's awesome that you're teaching your son! Maybe one day you'll bring him to a Punk Rope class. By the way, we hope to have a rope jumping instructional DVD out by early 2012. Keep on hopping!
Great job! Thanks for posting. If you get a chance...what am I doing wrong?

Thx a lot for the tips, but I have a different problem: I hit my head with the rope. What am I doing wrong? Are my hands to low?
masterknaster 1 month ago
@masterknaster
It's possible that you're dropping your hands or your rope is too short. Have a friend videotape you and you'll have your answer!
