He was controversial bcuz he painted objectionable paintings of religious deities which really hurt the sentiments of people. I remember a Danish Newspaper printing a cartoon on the Prophet and the mass upheaval that followed it. He was widely respected in India, the day he died there were candle light marches in his memory and it was all over the news, magazines and newspapers for many days.
