  • The guitar work on this track is just so sublime .

  • Reminds me a bit of Devil You Know.

  • 80's 80's 80's

  • Pasé semanas buscando esa canción hasta que se me ocurrió que podria ser de The Mission UK...Excelente!

  • this is so such a fab song that it is one of my funeral songs ...love it x

  • PS, it's one of my favourite songs like, from, ever ;P

  • I thought John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin produced these guys???

  • The Mission are touring! To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band, they're touring around UK and EU - visit our facebook page or The Mission World Information site (MWIS)

  • @PaulMWIS Exactly, The Mission ARE touring, not IS touring like some modern twat would say. Well done for not pandering to the pathetic modern tossy way of speaking. Kudos for that.

  • @Spankabuttux KTHXBI :)

  • @PaulMWIS WYVM ;)

  • What a woonderful song, pure inspiration! Hello from Brazil!!!

  • The Mission still lives in the hearts of the illuminated. Viva !!! Viva !!! Viva!!!

  • Great song but not that keen on the video.

  • The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cult, Psychedelic Furs, Jesus and Mary Chain, Love and Rockets ... oh what great music, none compared to the new crap out there. Memories!

  • Wonderful Video ,,, thank you ,

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman Are you thinking of Mark Thwaite maybe? He lived in Toronto for a bit, before moving back to England

  • Oh Sanctuary how I miss thee.

  • @erjs85 What a great place that was! In the early 90's seems we went every weekend.

  • @LeonJRichard A

A song of power and strength that bewitched us all!

  • @erjs85 What a great place that was! In the early 90's seems we went every weekend.

  • I used to spin this track @ The Twilight Zone Loud !! 140 db 3 -5 ' Tweak it to Perfection ! Bass that would go through You ! Highs for the back of the neck Separation, Presence, The energy that was there when I played this track was Incredible ! > This amazing music transcends Time and Space for me.

  • que bonita es la cancion viva the mission uk viva!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who directed this?

Some of it looks like it was taken from a film.

  • Proof that Wayne Hussey CAN write good songs. And at least I'm able to listen to these lyrics.

  • one love since 25 years !! cu soon in FFM !! NiX

  • A good reason this may have "Led Zep" sounds is because John Paul Jones produced this - I love this song but it fails to build to a big finish - falls short in my eyes - incredible potential

  • This is my favorite band. I love The Mission!

  • Yes the original version of 'Tower of Strength' was released in 1987, this revamped 1994 version was remixed by Youth (renowned producer and member of Killing Joke) for the band's Sum and Substance Singles compilation

  • @missionukvideos

Okay...my question is...Grains of Sand, Carved in Sand.. Both albums state trilogy. What is the third album? I have asked this question for 20yrs.. I'm I'm feeling pretty ignorant. I can usually find this out.

    ?????

    thanks

  • @BlackEyedSun No trilogy, as far as I know. Grains of Sand was an "odds and sods" collection of leftovers from the Carved in Sand sessions.

  • @missionukvideos I can only reply? WTF? SOMEONE needs to remake this video for one of the best songs ever!

They cannot be taken seriously by this, perhaps it's not even theirs.

I do not know how YOUTUBE works, but this needs a better fucking video!

  • @missionukvideos Best song, worst video.

  • @mobilecarlton I would suggest The Mission's Worst video award is certainly more due to one of their '90's songs. This, I find quite funny in its 'we are heroes' stance.

  • @Spankabuttux And further, I would say it is surely better to imagine yourself as a fictional hero, rather than, as Bono does, imagine yourself as an ACTUAL hero, despite his tax evasion. We all knew you were a cunt, Bono, it was only a matter of time...

  • eh? 1994?...... i was still in school when this came out, i may have smoked the odd spliff here and there but no where near enough to time travel !.

  • @stevenh915

Yes the original version of 'Tower of Strength' was released in 1987, this revamped 1994 version was remixed by Youth (renowned producer and member of Killing Joke) for the band's Sum and Substance Singles compilation. This video put together by the bands label is a compilation of the original Tower video with footage from other Mish videos.

  • @missionukvideos I don't understand why they would remix a song for a singles compilation. Don't people who release these albums realise that when they release a singles compilation or greatest hits people want to hear the ORIGINAL. If I'd bought this album without realising Tower of strength was a remix I would be so pissed off. I'd be thinking why can't they just put the bloody '87 version on there and leave it. Just my opinion.

  • This band does an exceptional style.

  • I love this song and always have. And it is true, once a goth always a goth no matter what happens in life!!

  • Saw them at Reading '89... bought a black t-shirt with the TOS lyrics on the back... I'd kill for that t-shirt again! Then saw them as The Metal Gurus in London... Lord, those were the days :)

  • @hotelBroslin

Me too! Well, being at Reading in 89...top spinny cobweb sculpture spinny thing during the Mission set, Shane McGowan falling onto the stage blind drunk and a truck-load of mud!

    To be 19 again!

  • Getting back to the Led Zep rip off tirades. I only wished I was good enough to rip off Led Zepplin and with their blessing to boot. Hell we all rip off somebody when we write and play our music. Jimmy Page would be the first to admit ripping off the great blues artists as well as contemporaries he has ripped off. It's still uncanny how much Wayne Hussey mirrored Bono and how Sisters of Mercy then appealed to so much wider of an audience.

  • früher waren die Jungs von RD besser drauf,...naja,..sind halt auch schon älter,...hähähähä

  • This song definitely came before 1994. Why promo is from 1994?

  • Im the guy doing the stunt double in the riding scene

  • excelente,... ricos anos de mission expetacular

  • Amazin tune. Probs gonna have it played @ my funeral

  • yeahhhhh

  • yeahhhh

  • amazing and awesome! yeahhhhhhhhh!!!!

  • Mission is great

  • Great song, even tho they ripped off "Kashmir" by Led Zep. Down to the guitar tuning D A D G A D and having John Paul Jones produce.

  • @SvenTviking

Sorry pal but you must be deaf. This doesn't remotely sound like "Kashmir".

  • @TheKurtKnispel It uses exactly the same special guitar tuning which I listed above. It uses exactly the same chords in a different order. John Paul Jones, Led Zeps bassist produced it.

  • @SvenTviking Sure. In different order. I cant say any part sound same like Kashmir . Maybe rhythm a bit. I cant agree it's ripoff.

"In a related meaning, a ripoff is a blatant or unscrupulous copy or imitation."

Something like if Puff Daddy would made "Come with me" without any credits to Led Zep.

  • @TheKurtKnispel If you lay guitar, you see the connection. Kashmir is mostly plaid with you fretting hand in one position, fretting two strings and moving up and down the neck. You have to use the special tuning, one that is a Jimmy Page signature because of all the songs that use it. Tower of strength uses the same tuning, same hand shape and even starts on the same chord. P Diddy had Page playing on come with me, and credited him

  • @SvenTviking I know. That's why I said "If" he would made the song without credits. So what you are saying that if you use C D A chords in standard tuning but in different order you are ripping off some original song made hundreds of years ago. This is just a tuning. Rhythm and melody is what counts in my book for a ripoff and you certainly surprised me with the Kashimir since I don't feel the connection by listening these two songs.

  • Same thing can be said of 'Severina' / 'Achilles last stand' - and 'Marian' / 'Friends' (Sisters of Mercy). Part of their brilliance that they (I suppose meaning Wayne Hussey) could take Led Zep inspired songs and make them sound totally different (you just find out when you play guitar!).

I think Andrew Eldritch once said in an early Sisters of Mercy interview something like 'it's about time someone said something as crass as 'Led Zep - ace!'.

  • such an awesome video and song thanks for posting. you are a tower of strength to me...

  • Yes, long live the beauty of the darkness...We opened for them on some dates in the early career...An amazing band, not soon forgotten... Cult were fairies by comparison...

  • hola

  • I worked on this video - many years ago now...

  • they dont make music like this no more, guys like pete murphy, sisters of mercy, sioux n banshees ,even the cure, lol, could go on for ever, god i miss them days:(....

  • I used to play this @ The Twilight Zone 143-145 db 5' until the hairs would stand up on your neck;)))) and the bass would pierce your soul ^_^ I have seen hardcore guys and girls dance hard to this with tears in their eyes Amazing track!!!... great memories

  • I agree with Prizak... Been 7 years since I wore the eyeliner as a Goth... but rediscovering those roots!!!!

  • A great reminder that music wasn't totally wasted in the nineties! It's easy to look back and dissmiss the decade as a wasteland musically but tracks like this show the truth...

  • no matter what music you listen to this group kick ass

  • Has a lil Doctor Who vibe to it :)

  • Now, I think it´s a bit psychedelic too, not just depressive and gothic as I used to thought

  • iT REMINDS ME I WAS CALLED la the mission BY 1989....

  • the original version is from Children album of 1988 ...this a version from a compilation album Sum & Substance of 1994

  • I love this song!!!

  • this song is wonderful

  • Happened to remember about them while i was thinking about the some old bands . This is a wonderful song . Thank you Youtube. Now I can just see those wonderful songs..

  • Christ, has it been almost 20 years since I have seen this band. I worked at Tower Records on California, and I saw them for free 3 times in 90. They were damn good.

  • By 1994 they were doing Mask and they were in decay....

I saw them 1988.They give roses to the public...

    they acted like gentleman...

  • It's about his Daughter. just to put you all straight.

  • I saw the Mission live twice in the 80's, they were great and the looked fantastic with their hats and black outfits. I remember their guitar player was absolutely brilliant.

  • Nice rhythm in this one

  • this song is from Gods Own Medicine album, 1988.

  • Its not from that album, its from CHILDREN!!!!

  • Isnt from 1994 anyway...

  • @CeciliaNicoletti1 or any other year apart from the year it appeared.....

  • @ Prizak1 you are right the mission`s music has got the same effect on me. But this song well i just sing it a lot for my son...

  • Sometimes I forget about the healing power of music..and that's exactly what the Mission's music is to me: healing.

  • fuckin sing that shit to me my Brother!!

  • the song of all songs

  • it's about a lover not a deity

  • I played the hell out of this song when it came out. LOVE.

  • amazing song

  • is not the video 1994

    is the video 1987

  • This song kicks ass. I wish I'd known about this when they were touring. They must have been a powerhouse live.

The song almost sounds christian in scope. I wonder if that's intentional. Wouldn't be the first time we've gotten that from a goth band. Anyone know if this is about Jesus? Or is it for a lover?

  • don't know, but U2 did a song called Yahweh

  • @derand57 i doubt this song is bout bloody jesus.

  • Well good. I like it better if it's directed at a lover. Who wouldn't like to hear this kind of sentiment directed at themselves.

  • @MegaRapture Dude- Hes riding a horse... I would assume its about a love relationship!!

  • ha!

  • @derand57

I think it's a love song. I agree, a lot of goth songs can almost religious.

  • the mission blew me away with their stunning proformance on topof the pops with

    tower of strength.

the music of today is an insult to bands like

the mission and sisters of mercy.

  • thx : )

  • I feel sorry for the little girl at the end being taken away by four dodgy old goths :D

Great track and a real classic though, this is a remix by Youth, from Killing Joke.

  • That's Wayne the singer's daughter.She is in safe company :)

  • Fasza zene

  • Muy buena cancion , me gusta cuando fueron SISTERS OF MERCY , pero esta etapa tmb es muy buena...que tales recuerdos...

  • Wayne rules

  • this was played at my brothers funeral

  • The Mission were, are and will be the best band of the world I have ever seen.

  • that's awesom lol I hav too many songs i like tht would be played at my funeral

  • @TheEternalgoth666 I'm sure everyone was with him @ that moment

  • ICH HOFFE DU LIEST DAS... you raise me up, when i´m on the floor... Aber es ist dir sicherlich egal... So wie so vieles... leider!!!

  • wayne ur such a stud!!!! awesome song, who cares about comparisons, its just an awesome song!

  • I remember how they'd close the Piranha room (Goth/Industrial club in San Diego) with this one. Awesome tune & singer.

  • amazing

the best sound of the world......

  • as good as music gets...anyone agrees?

  • :O)

  • How beautiful is this song? What a great band....I was a goth myself back in the 80's & once ur a goth ur always a goth deep inside, no matter what you do & how much things have changed over the years. Long live sadness & the beauty of darkness

  • @Prizak1 why does goth have to be sad? The Missions songs are not sad and not always dark either....but they are brimful of PASSION and BEAUTY and POWER...whether they portray pain or joy they are always filled with these ingredients...INTENSITY and EXPRESSION...love you Wayne

  • @Prizak1 ahmen to that

  • @Prizak1 Thats great yeah my mom used to be goth or post punk and when i was little i was always listening to the cure and siouxie and depeche ect... but ive always known that that was me, Now Im the goth in the family and its great to hear this music!!

  • @Prizak1

    @Prizak1

You are so right. I keep telling this all the time. Almost because people who know me now cannot imagine i was a goth in the 90´s.Once gothic...

I haved travel around the word- musically speaking- because i love to know other cultures of our planet and doing that by knowing the local music is amazing, There is so much richness in diversity! Even if i am celebrating with incredibly joyfull music from Nigeria or India.. those are phases of exploitation, part of the knowledge.

  • @Prizak1

Continuing the answer:(..)When i am on my own i really feel i´m alive in nostalgic moments/songs. I guess the gothic part of me after all still lives in me . At the same time i can´t stand inconsolable people or people who complain a lot. I can´t bare wickness. That´s why African Culture 4 ex is so incredible. All the energy and positive attitude facing immeasurable problems. But yet, i hear those goth songs and hear my soul speacking in each note..How weird+contradictory is all this?

  • What else can you say, awesome video

    and song

  • Haha!Wayne gay?

His outfits were a bit iffy, but he aint gay!!!

    Ta...

  • I have a freind who knew Wayne very well he stayed in his flat a lot and was good freinds with him and he was definately not gay.He was a real character and he loved women.

  • Urmmm i dont think Wayne was gay whatever makes you think that ???????

  • I agree with u mario6sic. I prefer SOM. Aguanten los sister x 100pre.-

  • i like the mission, but still prefer sisters of mercy anyday :P

  • Too U2

  • Queer /kwie(r) odd, strange or unusual. The man is on a shirehorse in a city or large town or someant and i remember them from Top Of The Pops and i am sure they had banshees with them on stage. So there you have it "QUEERS"! ps they might be gay as well, but still a great tune.

  • i was a goth...still in my heart....luv it

  • This song is absolutely magical. I dunno what causes it but there is no one i show for the first time that do not love it and become addict to the harmony.

  • Great tune. Pity they were queers

  • I have it on good authority that Wayne wasn't gay ;o)

  • I'm not convinced that his gender preference makes a damn bit of difference.

  • They weren't queers as you put it. What difference does it make anyway??Still a great tune.

  • Great atmospheric tune, thanks for posting.

  • I love this song. Was so glad to have seen them over the years!

  • I have the original disc by the Mission (horrible quality btw, is a cd from 18 years ago :-).......but really want this version too on mp3, who can help me out?

  • Great song!

  • Great share redman, Billy ;)

  • Anyone else hearing Dead Can Dance's "The Host Of Seraphim" tucked away in the background there? :-)

  • yep!

  • I love Dead Can Dance!!!!!! But no, its not it.

  • Hey gr8 song. Takes me back to my youth, i used to love the mish. thx 4 posting

  • eu amo essa banda

  • Mmmmm.I wonder whether the band had thought this one through or what.I mean,Ya ma fuppa ya hi Hi...

  • very powerful song, very meaningful lyrics and video.thanks for uploading

  • this was played at my borthers funeral

    RI.P ash

    2005--2006

  • respect.

  • thanks

  • how to say that this was a wonderful decision?

just saying "nice choice" sounds very dull and dumb in this context.

  • Sounds just as freah and good as it did back then!

  • good God!! this brings so many good memories. it took me 20 years back in time, when i was a reckless & wild teenager. music was always my escape and Mission was my favorite band at that time. i rediscovered them at 36 and they still sound so brilliantly clear! the lyrics and the sound still do the same to my brains.

  • I love this song. I used to go to this goth/industrial club and they'd play it at the end of the night. Brings back good memories.

  • Indeed these artists are in fact the last of the 80's new wave era. The music and the culture of the 80's was not about goths (celebration of death) or gangsta rap (celebration of criminal behavior) - there was an attempt to be inspirational and lift the spirit (as the words of this song demonstrate).

    Regards,

Middle aged dude from the 80s

  • this was a great song for me,still is,it implicates that somebody is involved with yo looking after you.

    pshhhhhhssshhhs

  • Simplesmente fantastica, sem duvida uma das melhores musicas que ja ouvi...!!!

  • tenho no meu mp4 e ouço todos os dias.

  • Love The Mission<3

  • This song is wicked.

And I wish the crazy spiked-helmeted monsters with weird weapons that are in this video existed in real life.

  • A perfect song and a very good video.

  • children was the most album heartache

  • omg,i cant believe it so awsome dude sweet!

  • The mission hase Nothing to do with Gothic muzic ore stijl they where adopted bij gothics. long befor there was GOTHIC they where underground New wave music in the likes of U2 simple minds ecetera ectera ecetera. the house seen didnt even ecsisted back then. i had the very first lp albums of them. to me they are right in between U2 and the simple minds THE EURLY YEARS.. nevertheless Great song and music

  • you know shit all about goth music. Goth started properly in the 80s and evolved from punk and post-punk.

These guys formed from the remnants of some of the seminal goth bands of the era, and were akin to their peersm becuase that's what goth was at the time.

  • To get an idea of how silly your comments are, just watch the "stay with me" video, described by the great Mr Hussey himself as "carry on goth"...jesus christ Wayne and Craig came from the Sisters, cant get much more Uber goth than that!

  • Wayne Hussey. Respect.

  • This song is utterly awesome. One of my favourite Goth tracks ever. After all these years this song has lost none of its power to move me!!!

  • it`s boy george havin a bad trip

  • Classic Goth.

    Superb.
