@unfukkkmee Only if you believe Virgil's epic story on Rome's origins. There are no historical records of the Greeks colonizing Rome. They colonized Naples and Sicily, but not Rome. If there was some "link" between the Romans and Greeks in any direct way, Latin would essentially be a dialect of Greek... which it is not. Latin is its own language and is not related to Greek in anyway. Historically speaking, the Romans were not of Greek origin. They admired classical Greece though.
@unfukkkmee The latin alphabet is a mix of the Etruscan alphabet and the Greek alphabet ¬¬

Although the Roman legionnaires are outnumbering the Persian Sassanid Immortals during between 300-500 AD, those Persian bitches scored some f*cking unbelievable victories against the Romans... That's because those Immortals are mostly elite archers!!!

Also, the 'useless' wicker shield people keep bringing up was actually used by archers or light troops. The 'Immortals' used a round shield similar to the Greek Aspis.
The Persians in this video are based off Japanese/Oceania warrior cultures and are not at all what the 'Immortals' looked like.

@TheAzeri1977 "persians is wrong ward for using the Suasanie or Saljok empires" Thats like saying Roman empire is the wrong word for the "byzantium" empire...
@unfukkkmee in what way are persians arabs? Persian is an indoeuropean language, they originated from central asia and are "cousins" to the Aryans (who invaded india). They are in no way are arab or semitic. In modern times they are muslim and may have adopted some arabic customs, but that is only because the arabs conquered them in the 7th century and dominated their culture for thousand years. FYI Turks are the same way
@unfukkkmee Arabs are Semitic peoples who were nomads in the arabian peninsula. Persians are non-semitic people who originated from central asia and had some link to groups in the indian sub-continent, the aryan peoples to be exact.
persians adopted arab customs and religion when the islamic khaliphat al rashudin conquered the persians under Caliph Umar.
@unfukkkmee, WOW what a stupid comment. Iranians are not now or ever been Arabs and most of the nations like Phoenicians were Semitic as Egyptians and Syrian and many others and are not Arabs until they were invaded.
@iraqiblaze, Everything that you consider Arab was taken by Arabs when they invaded Iran and other nations, from clothing, customs, education, medicine, architecture and more. As one of the Abbasid Caliph said Iranians ruled the world for thousand years and never needed us, we have been here for a hundred years and could not do without them for an hour. Islam plagiarized a lot from Zartosht religion and many of Muhammads visions were duplicated from him.
@Aitidina What about the armies of Macedon under Alexander and his successors? What about the other ancient Greek civilizations? It's not just Sparta and Rome.
@ajbenius I mentioned Sparta because they were trained since they were children. But when i speak about Rome i don't refer to the early Roman legions, I'm speaking about the roman military AFTER Mario's reform. That was really the first professional army: it wasn't a group of citizens recruted for a campaign and trained for that campaign; they were recruited for a period of 18 years and they would fight and train in the legion until they could return as civils. It's more similar to actual armies
@ajbenius It's because unlike Sparta and Rome, pretty much everyone didn't have an army per se. They had lots of people, who voluntered and had the money to provide their own equipment, and were only part of the army for as long as there was a war on. Sparta and Rome(reform), had permenant armies, they standardized pretty much everything - they provided all the equipment, so the soldiers who couldn't afford, it could fight, training, etc. So, they were pretty much the first professional armies.
Nice reasons. But I'm pretty sure that other Greek nations also had regular armies that had experience. And I'm pretty sure that the state trained and equipped some units.
@ajbenius They did have experienced armies, mainly because many of them went to war every few years. Campiagns usually went on for years, so armies would have been kept around for a while, and they just raised another army, (preferably with veterans) when they needed one. There was training, but most people trained themselves in public armouries. Some units were permanent, like elite units, but mostly in hellenistic areas, raising armies when needed was the thing.
Lol, the legionnaires were outnumbered by the elites of the Persians and yet they still won ^^ go Romans (btw I know the Immortals weren't actually considered elite per se, they were only called Immortals because there was so many of them that if you killed one it would seem like you never killed him because another would take his place)
@demomanchaos No, not really, they were a massive royal guardsmen regiment, renowned for having so many members that if one man is killed in combat another would take his place in the formation so quickly that it would seem as if the man never died. They were pretty shit, they wore cloth armour and used useless whicker shields, lol.
@Kiwis4life You do know not just any goon can be a royal guard right? The elites are the ones who are given the chance to be royal guards (like the Byzantine Varangian Guard). They actually wore scale armor under their robes. Against the enemies they normally faced, their equipment was quite sufficient. It was not sufficient to defeat the heavily armored Greeks in close combat.
@demomanchaos The enemies they normally faced were the Greeks and Macedonians...and yes normally that is the case, that Royal guards are generally elites but the Persians weren't really all that good soldiers and so it was hard for their men to survive long enough to become experienced veterans and so they would have had no elites. Their strength was numbers and this Royal guard regiment of Immortals reflected this strength.
@demomanchaos their bows were composite bows and as such strong enough to penetrate the heavy armor in closer ranges. but essentially they were useless against such an enemy in frontal attacks. shouldve flanked the enemy instead...
@Kiwis4life "massive royal guardsmen regiment, renowned for having so many members that if one man is killed in combat another would take his place in the formation so quickly that it would seem as if the man never died." Actually their called immortals because Haradotus or his informant confused the names Anûšiya ('companions') with Anauša ('Immortals')...
@demomanchaos Actually he's right. The name does refer to their numbers. Kept at 10,000 no matter what. They'd pull soldiers from anywhere to keep those numbers at 10,000. Don't compare them to the Varangian Guard. The Varangian Guard was composed solely of hardened Viking and Anglo-Saxon warriors. There wasn't any chance of a shit-out-of-luck peasant being thrown into the mix like there was with the Immortals. Not to say some of them weren't actually hardened.
@Kiwis4life Um they were the kings bodyguard for a reason. And they were called immortals becuae they never left their dead on the battlefield, and they didn't look like that.
@Kiwis4life yeah i know i have great respect for rome and the byzantines they were great but they had to fall some how rome with many barbaric tribes and the byzantines(just in case you dont know who the byzantines are they are the eastern empire of rome their capital is constantinople Emp. Constantine made it the whole capital of rome but they became more greek than rome so when rome fell it didnt seem they were roman because they spoke greek)fell because of ottoman turks.
@131995pinkgirl Yeah I know who the Byzantines were...but Rome actually only fell because Constantine, who was a complete jackass, disbanded the Western empires army to save money and hired barbarian mercenaries to protect them from the barbarians...didn't work out so good. So yeah they had to fall sometime, but, as reflected in the Byzantine empire, the Western Roman empire could have lasted a thousand years longer...
True. But you shouldn't underestimate the immortals. Herodotus wrote that of all the soldiers from the diffrent nations in the persian army, the native persians were the best, and the best amongst the native persians were the immortals. They actually did make a brave and fierce last stand in open battle at plataea against the spartans before finally being overwhelmed, fighting to the last man.
@unfukkkmee If 20,000 Immortals died, then the whole unit would be wiped out. But no, the Immortals were not wiped out. The Spartans are just darn overrated.
@unfukkkmee Erm, actually it was more like 3000 Greeks and 50,000 Persians. There were only 300 Spartans, but a lot of other Greeks showed up for the fight. And Herodotus' numbers for the Persians were completely ridiculous and merely hyperbole. That would imply around half the population of Persia showed up for the fight. And other than Thracian conscripts, there weren't many barbarians involved.
@unfukkkmee not exactly there were forces of corinth and athens there aswell, the spartans only stood alone when they became outflanked by the persians
This is wrong. The Roman Legions fought as one unit. Each man lending his strength to the defense. In this animation it is them fighting as individuals. I don't know much about the Persian Immortals but Roman Legionaries didn't fight well as individuals.
@jamesrealoded rome brought money for Persians for hundreds of years to make sure Persians wouldn't kickm their ass. get your facts right and google "sassanids"
the found evidence of a civilization in south america that is older than the persians mesopatamians and the egyptians in south america and they found writings in a library type thing they are to old to read but there is also carvings in this apparent nations capital of a king on sstatues that match too when they started.

That was really the first professional army: it wasn't a group of citizens recruted for a campaign and trained for that campaign; they were recruited for a period of 18 years and they would fight and train in the legion until they could return as civils. It's more similar to actual armies
Aitidina 3 months ago
@ajbenius It's because unlike Sparta and Rome, pretty much everyone didn't have an army per se. They had lots of people, who voluntered and had the money to provide their own equipment, and were only part of the army for as long as there was a war on. Sparta and Rome(reform), had permenant armies, they standardized pretty much everything - they provided all the equipment, so the soldiers who couldn't afford, it could fight, training, etc. So, they were pretty much the first professional armies.

@GortonMichael and @Aitidina
Nice reasons. But I'm pretty sure that other Greek nations also had regular armies that had experience. And I'm pretty sure that the state trained and equipped some units.
ajbenius 3 months ago

Kiwis4life 3 months ago
@Kiwis4life The Immortals were the elites of the Persians.
demomanchaos 3 months ago
@demomanchaos No, not really, they were a massive royal guardsmen regiment, renowned for having so many members that if one man is killed in combat another would take his place in the formation so quickly that it would seem as if the man never died. They were pretty shit, they wore cloth armour and used useless whicker shields, lol.
Kiwis4life 3 months ago
@Kiwis4life You do know not just any goon can be a royal guard right? The elites are the ones who are given the chance to be royal guards (like the Byzantine Varangian Guard). They actually wore scale armor under their robes. Against the enemies they normally faced, their equipment was quite sufficient. It was not sufficient to defeat the heavily armored Greeks in close combat.
demomanchaos 3 months ago
@demomanchaos The enemies they normally faced were the Greeks and Macedonians...and yes normally that is the case, that Royal guards are generally elites but the Persians weren't really all that good soldiers and so it was hard for their men to survive long enough to become experienced veterans and so they would have had no elites. Their strength was numbers and this Royal guard regiment of Immortals reflected this strength.

TheBloodyBlackJackal 2 months ago
@demomanchaos their bows were composite bows and as such strong enough to penetrate the heavy armor in closer ranges. but essentially they were useless against such an enemy in frontal attacks. shouldve flanked the enemy instead...

@Kiwis4life "massive royal guardsmen regiment, renowned for having so many members that if one man is killed in combat another would take his place in the formation so quickly that it would seem as if the man never died." Actually their called immortals because Haradotus or his informant confused the names Anûšiya ('companions') with Anauša ('Immortals')...
TheBloodyBlackJackal 2 months ago
@demomanchaos Actually he's right. The name does refer to their numbers. Kept at 10,000 no matter what. They'd pull soldiers from anywhere to keep those numbers at 10,000. Don't compare them to the Varangian Guard. The Varangian Guard was composed solely of hardened Viking and Anglo-Saxon warriors. There wasn't any chance of a shit-out-of-luck peasant being thrown into the mix like there was with the Immortals. Not to say some of them weren't actually hardened.
Cainus44 3 months ago

131995pinkgirl 2 months ago
@131995pinkgirl Yeah I know who the Byzantines were...but Rome actually only fell because Constantine, who was a complete jackass, disbanded the Western empires army to save money and hired barbarian mercenaries to protect them from the barbarians...didn't work out so good. So yeah they had to fall sometime, but, as reflected in the Byzantine empire, the Western Roman empire could have lasted a thousand years longer...

@Kiwis4life mmm... you're speaking about the inmortal cavalry, right?

20.000 ''IMMORTALS'' DIED BY 300 GREEK SPARTANS
unfukkkmee 3 months ago
@unfukkkmee
PoitierFrance 3 months ago
@unfukkkmee If 20,000 Immortals died, then the whole unit would be wiped out. But no, the Immortals were not wiped out. The Spartans are just darn overrated.
ajbenius 3 months ago
@ajbenius THE GREEK SPARTANS WAS 300 WARRIORS , AND THE PERSIAN BARBARIAND WAS 1.000.000. THE GREEK SPARTANS KILLED 20.000 PERSO- BARBARIANS
unfukkkmee 3 months ago
@unfukkkmee Erm, actually it was more like 3000 Greeks and 50,000 Persians. There were only 300 Spartans, but a lot of other Greeks showed up for the fight. And Herodotus' numbers for the Persians were completely ridiculous and merely hyperbole. That would imply around half the population of Persia showed up for the fight. And other than Thracian conscripts, there weren't many barbarians involved.

This is wrong. The Roman Legions fought as one unit. Each man lending his strength to the defense. In this animation it is them fighting as individuals. I don't know much about the Persian Immortals but Roman Legionaries didn't fight well as individuals.
