The second caterpillar shown is the pre-pupa form of the Pale Swallowtail, Papilio eurymedon. They change color from green to brown, and suspent themsleves like that in preparation for metamorphosis. I have a few other videos showing this species if you do a YT search for the species name. :-)
No, it's not! Most butterfly caterpillars are fairly safe to touch, but there are many moth caterpillars that have stinging and toxic spines on their backs. A number of the moth caterpillars I rear have spines that can sting (like stinging nettle plants), and others, like the Puss Caterpillar are downright toxic. In tropical places, many caterpillars are downright dangerous so it's best not to touch them at all unless you know exactly which species you're dealing with. :-O
I was very lucky as a child because I played with caterpillars a lot of time, mostly with the yellow caterpillar. I never hurt one and even saved a few from spider's webs. All my friends played with their Barbdolls, my favorite things were my microscope, lizards and frogs
My kinda girl - we would have gotten along well! :-) Generally speaking, most caterpillars in the US that don't have hairs or spines on them don't have a way to inject toxins and so are pretty safe... It's the really ornate, hairy/colorful ones that often have a defense system like that. Even so, MOST are not dangerous (just irritating at worst) unless one is really allergic to them. In the tropics it's a different story. Hairy larvae can be quite toxic, even deadly. O_o
Me too. I just didn't have the equipment back then. However, these slideshows were made from still images which were pretty hi-res so it could be possible to re-make them in HD, like I did for the Stitching the Sky vid. I'll add that to the project list! :-)
There are over 600,000 known species of butterflies and moths, with more being discovered every year. Many of the caterpillars look similar but if even so, with that many kinds out there just imagine the possibilities! :-)
Some years ago, the parsley plant on my mother's deck was being eaten by someting. Upon inspection, to our delight, the swallowtail (I think) caterpillars were at it. We let them have it all - so lovely!
0:25 through 0:28 is the pupa of the Phoebis sennae caterpillar. You can watch the metamorphosis of that species in my other videos; GTUgUEpqBrA and knQXYryPZrA
I love the music, but I just had to save this gallery of cats. I love most caterpillars and am convinced the sat's still hold the title for the most of the most beautiful cats in the world. I personally favor Automeris [not found in California] and any sphingids.
I try to credit the music in the ending credits and text description of each video. It's not much of a title (I have many compositions without "real" titles!) but this one is called "5th Solo" (composition #286). from the SOLO CD. ThCD isn't in production at present, but I hope to have the LightScribe version online soon.

It's funny how insects are used for a lot of different movie-type stuff - especially horror and monster movies.

Black Swallowtail caterpillars love parsley. If they were green with black/yellow/red bands, that's probably what they were. :)
