I grew up in Europe in the early 1960's and it was common to see little American flags displayed in the homes and cars of the Italians, Germans, French and Swiss. Being American was a blessing at that time. But our two recent visits to Europe were strained with constant explanations about our personal politics and how the current administration and foreign policies do not reflect our own. But, to be fair, evidence of the decline of American popularity in Europe began in the late 60's.

If you knew about our election, you would know that it is NOT just putting a cross on a piece of paper. My friends and I waited for 6 hours in line to vote. It was cold. We knocked on doors for 5 hours every Saturday for 2 months talking to people about Obama and often getting doors slammed in our faces. A friend of mine didn't eat breakfast for a month and gave that money to the Obama campaign instead. In my paper there was a story about a boy who gave up his allowance for the campaign.

Being American was a blessing at that time. But our two recent visits to Europe were strained with constant explanations about our personal politics and how the current administration and foreign policies do not reflect our own. But, to be fair, evidence of the decline of American popularity in Europe began in the late 60's.

If you knew about our election, you would know that it is NOT just putting a cross on a piece of paper. My friends and I waited for 6 hours in line to vote. It was cold. We knocked on doors for 5 hours every Saturday for 2 months talking to people about Obama and often getting doors slammed in our faces. A friend of mine didn't eat breakfast for a month and gave that money to the Obama campaign instead. In my paper there was a story about a boy who gave up his allowance for the campaign.

I am by far not oblivious to the world. I am an American by choice, not birth. I have family in different countries and continents. I was born in Latin America and educated in Europe. All countries have their interests, which they will pursue & I'm sure that I will be disappointed at some point with this administration. But I can tell you that those of us who are excited about Obama probably feel more patriotic now than we have for a very long time. Excuse our temporary "smugness".

Um just because most Europeans are Whites doesnt mean Whites arent split into minorities too for example Britain has had more than one Jewish PM weve had a female PM Margaret Thatcher and Scots, Welshmen and the Duke of Wellington an Irishman have also became PM.

Good for you. Most Americans are white, too. I have lived in England. I have lived in Spain also. To your credit, I think that England is more accepting of immigrants than other countries. We also in this country elected a white Catholic years ago. We have had lots of White Presidents from various European countries. This guy makes me very uneasy. The WRONG solution can be VERY harmful to us all. I read on one site that scientists couldn't explain how it works. I think its odd that the taxi cab driver still said he was an American even during the Bush years so he must have held some esteme for our country and you don't know what his response is now that Obama is in the white house. You didn't even compare the two responses of before Obama and after Obama so you have no way of knowing if Obama's election helped.
