I've got two different annoying folders at my Local Disc D: after some Windows updates. I was complete denied from deliting it, either withe a Administrator log in. In properties, the "Read only" was check'd, but also denied to uncheck it. I've got these terrible annoying folders for a year or so. I'll finally managed to DELETE them thanks to you my friend. I tried a lot of different ways from other forums, but all of them resulted in "Access denied".

@MrCyril74 No it will work. I thought the same thing when the prompt came up but as long as the windows old folder is in the same location as the folder you're moving then it will be moved over. Just continue with the prompt.

tyvm but you should mention that the Windows.old folder you make cant be in a subfolder(EXAMPLE- D:\Documents\Windows.old) you need to move Windows.old folder to (EXAMPLE-D:\Windows.old)

@THEguythatdoes Vista is very similar to 7 so this also works in Vista, maybe even XP. If you can move the file you should be able to delete it using this method. If not you can try using third party locked file deleting software.

Try just renaming the folder to Windows.old. If you don't have enough permissions to do that follow the instructions in the link located in the description. It shows you how to gain complete control of the files.

Great it worked, But I had to run disk cleanup as administrator in order for it to recognize the windows old file. cleared up 45gb for me!!

@HiMyNameIsRichy Make sure you choose the Drive with the "Windows.old" folder when you load up Disk Cleanup. If you created the folder make sure it is typed correctly.

But what about when you put the file/folder in it and it says that you dont have permission to move it?

You can try renaming the folder to "Windows.old" instead. If that does not work make sure the file is not being used by another application. If you have Windows 7, it should tell you which application is using that folder in the warning box. If this is not the case you have to gain ownership of that folder which I might post in another video. I posted a link for that in my description.

I actually did that to install Windows 7 RTM. Except instead of using the "delete previous windows installations" I just deleted the windows.old folder and it said it was too big for the trash so it was gonna permanently delete it right off.

Probably would have been cleaner to use that method because I love having that new format feel xD

Its the same thing. The only reason this works to delete file and folders without permissions is because Windows deleted the files for you and it does it in a Privileged state. Kinda like using root or superuser on a Mac or Linux system.
