@umadbroooooo1 Yes, unless you have homebrew that you want to load from it you can remove the USB flash drive from your PS2 since, provided you installed everything correctly, all of the stuff from the APPS folder in the Install folder should now be on the memory card and everything will be loaded from there. There is a failsafe however where FMCB will check the USB first for a copy of uLaunchELF so you can still access homebrew even if uLaunchELF wasn't installed properly.
hi.i hav ps2 matrix infinty 1.93 chip on console.i hav burnt swap magic3.6 iso file on dvd to instal elf files..but when i inserted d dvd in d console.it displayed d mesg dat cant read d disc.i wana 9 why dis hapnd.n is it necessary to block d sensors even though i hav modchip in d console.pls reply as soon as possible.......pls ans in english only.thanx
@aminohnedich There is homebrew you can run that will allow you to run games from USB however the usb ports on the PS2 are v1.1 speeds which is much slower then the actual DVD drive so many games won't work very well via usb if at all. Long load times, skipping FMVs and random crashes can occur depending on the type of games you are trying to play. Only a small fraction of PS2 games will run perfectly. The only other alternative is to get an phat PS2 and use an IDE hard drive.
@DARKZERO216psn Not on it's own but it makes the process a lot easier. What it's doing is detecting that the game has been patched a certain way and automatically loading a homebrew app called ESR which then loads the patched game. You have to already be able to run homebrew on your PS2 in order to install this.
Is ESR used to just play backup games or does it have to be used with FMCB to play a backup? All I get is a black screen with ESR alone and BTW i use a ps2 slim, any help?
@Mojay21 ESR can be run on it's own but the discs have to be patched so that they appear like DVD Video discs to the PS2 so it doesn't try to do a disc check to verify if they are legit. The ESR link in the video description also has a link to the patching program.
@Thecomix00 "This guide is for those people who already know how to [run homebrew]." You cannot simply plug a usb flash drive in to the PS2 and expect it to load whatever you put on it since the PS2 was not made to read flash drives at all. Only homebrew and unlicensed software can read usb flash drives such as the Codebreaker and Action Replay and uLaunchELF (shown already started at the beginning of this video). Check the text guide in the description for more information.
@ShadowKiller6797 There are links in the description. You will have to already have a way of getting homebrew loaded on your PS2 in order to run this. You can NOT just put the files on a usb flash drive and expect it to run.
Question: Where the hell can I GET THIS CRAP!!! I want to mod my PS2, and can't find a version of this. Is there a free version? Where can I get this?
@SpirosDeath FMCB was designed to work with non-modded PS2s. You would have to find a way to run homebrew without a mod chip. Many homebrew programs like uLaunchELF can read flash drives formatted to FAT or FAT32. A new version of FMCB that was released very recently can be installed using the PS3 PS2 memcard adaptor on a PC. I have yet to play with that version though and I don't have one of those adaptors...yet.
@Haldrie i hace see a modded ps2 run that homebrew thas why ask tell me somthin. what i need to run mcboot all tytorials i have see allways somthing missing.... thnx for reply btw
@Haldrie-i copied the install file and freemcboot..and insrtd my USB hardedrive(500gb) to the ps2...now i swtchd the ps2 on...it strtd and i pressed START button no configurtion came...plz help!!! my hardrives format is NTSC!!
@lilfreakeeshan If you listen to my introduction I mention that this is for "those of you that can already run homebrew" meaning that this WILL NOT simply run off of a usb device just by copying the files over. In order to run the installer you have to first run some kind of exploit on your PS2 that will allow you to load up homebrew applications. Also NTSC is a video format not a hard drive format. I think what you meant to say was NTFS which is NOT compatible with the PS2.
@lilfreakeeshan One thing I would also like to mention is that I recently found news that new software has been made that will let you install FMCB using a PS3 PS2 Memory Card Adaptor. I plan on getting one myself and showing how it's done within the month.
@lostnalone87 FMCB alone only lets your run homebrew. It's ESR that lets you run backups and FMCB has a feature to auto load it when a patched game is detected (provided it was installed correctly that is).
@ComingToDoDamage This is normal if you don't have a config file which you normally won't. Once you have uLanuchELF save any settings you change it will generate a new config file and won't show that message anymore.
@veyron201 The exploit is only loaded if you have the memory card in when you turn on the PS2. If you take it out and reset the PS2 it will start up like normal. You can still load regular PS2 games when FMCB loaded as well. It only loads ESR if it detects a patched game.
@veyron201 Correct and there is no risk of damage to your PS2. I can't really think of any possible way this can brick your PS2 or anything considering how it works.
@veyron201 The ESR link in the description has a download for the ESR GUI Patcher (easiest and most noob friendly patcher in my opinion) which is a simple drag 'n drop program to patch your games with. All PS2 will work with this EXCEPT any PS2 that has bios version 2.50 or higher (mostly the new silver PS2s that were released after the price drop).
@MYDRAGGIN84 I just has to be formatted to FAT or FAT32. Generally Windows will default to FAT if it's a flash drive of less then 2GB and FAT32 if it's 2-4GB and NTFS if it's 4GB or more but will still give you the option to format it FAT32. If I recall correctly you don't get the NTFS format option for anything less then 2GB. This of course is only for then windows formatter but you can use any drive format tool.
@MYDRAGGIN84 That is what I use mostly because it lets me do a lot of things like backing up my memory cards as well as letting me load up any homebrew I want but getting the PS2 to load homebrew in the first place can be a bit more tricky. I originally used the Independence Exploit to mod my PS2 but I have also tried the Action Replay media player exploit as well as the game swap where you swap an original copy for a burned copy that has one of the elf files changed on it.
@Haldrie well i have a flashdrive that works well with my ps2 slim.I installed freemac on it.And it works well load time is quick,As well the movie scene.I now this isnt a newbie vid so im going to make this simple how come i cant see it on my browser screen like urs.And i want to put media player on it i got a phat ps2 with a hard drive in it 20g how do i get it to load it up please a little help and i can go from there i softmodded my xbox so i kinda got a clue on scripts and stuff
@MYDRAGGIN84 I customized my settings by turning off the scrolling feature and moving it over until it looked close enough to the original browser options as possible. If you have SMS.ELF (simple media systems...or something like that) and HDLOADER.ELF (whichever version of hdloader you want to use) in the INSTALL folder when you install FMCB then it will automatically add links to them on the main browser. Otherwise you will have to add them manually in the Configurator.
@Haldrie can u make a video on how to add them to configurator setup.Im trying mybest 2get this downpack and ialready have a copy of swap magic from a friend that aready owned it
@shirtrippah What do you need explained? I have several videos about FMCB and I've been trying to figure out what to do next but I don't get a lot of input from people that watch my videos about what else they want.
@Dasher164 FMCB is only installed on the memory card and will only load if you have the memory card in either slot 1 or slot 2 when you turn on your PS2.Without the memory card inserted at boot your PS2 will boot like normal and you will still be able to use the memory card like normal since the PS2 only checks the memory card for that kind of software when you first turn it on.
@Dasher164 Formatting erases everything from the memory card but as long as you are still in the installer you can install FMCB as long as the installer isn't stored on the memory card (which you should have in on a USB flash drive anyway). It's only once you turn off or restart your PS2 (or remove the device the installer is on) that you can no longer use the installer and if you didn't (re)install FMCB then you will have to use whatever exploit you did to get FMCB installed before.
@lazydany1 You need some way of getting homebrew loaded on the PS2 which isn't exactly easy unless you own a special disc like swap magic or one of the "cheat" discs. There is a method where you can modify a file on a game disc you own, burn a copy and then do a cog swap to switch the real disc for the burned one to get it to load the modified file but that only works on a small handful of games and the cogswap can be very tricky if you own a slim PS2.
@LAGxTV I've heard there is a modified codebreaker.elf file that you can use to boot ESR.elf but I have yet to find it myself. It was originally made for use with HDLoader.
@cemetary665isVictor That's because this WILL NOT BOOT DIRECTLY FROM A USB FLASH DRIVE! I said in the video that this was for people who "already know how to run homebrew" on their PS2 as the installer is a homebrew application and needs to be booted from a homebrew launcher like uLaunchELF.
@Haldrie Duh I had Swapmagic to boot a disk w/ the exploit with the usd files, but free_mcboot.elf would never launch and freeze even when I chaged the name to SWAPMAGIC.ELF and with the SWAPMAGIC folder all on the root after booting the ulaunchelf disk (which actually worked, but froze upon booting. However I managed to get with cdgenps2 when I made an ISO through the program with the FMCB files on it. Burned it and it took me right to install w/ SM, it's so much easier than the ulaunchelf.
@cemetary665isVictor I don't think it was ever made to boot with the swap magic method. I usually suggest booting uLaunchELF first because it guarantees that it will boot and it gives you a chance to backup any saves you might have before installing.
@Haldrie Well you have to understand that the same FMCB 1.8 files are put into the iso along with other stuff I followed straight from the guide on sks apps. I know ulaunchelf is usually easier for most people, and I tried it with SM + my usb's FMCB files in the correct folders as proven on sks apps and on gamedexerity's channel. I don't remember the exact step, but I'll just send a link cause I installed exactly as I would with the actual MC (somewhat diff), but by manually copy/paste the file
@Haldrie dude trust me sks.apps changed my view on softmodding go to sksapps.com for the esiest ps2 expliots and apps. Look up the tutorial I sent you, follow and it should bring up the installer pretty fast. True I can't use just a usb, but all I needed was cdgenps2 and the noobie package along with my 3rd party device (swap magic) and of course the blank cd for booting on my sensor modded ps2 slim. The disk booted the FMCB 1.8 for me and with no elflaunch. Check it out dude I wouldn't BS..
@cemetary665isVictor That may work for people that have swap magic but most of the people that have left comments on my videos and that I've talked to about this (as well as myself) do not own a copy of swap magic. The reason I boot this with uLaunchELF is because the other exploits I have worked with will not boot the installer directly but they will boot uLaunchELF. Also since hacking my PS2 I have been using uLaunchELF as a save manager to transfer saves to and from my memory cards.
@Haldrie It's pretty much the same thing if you have swap magic except it actually does boot it directly (and from the cd) like ulaunchelf, but w/o needing to go to the elf file manually. I had problems getting these on my memcard with the ulaunch cd/usb cause I can't manage my memcard since I don't have a method to transfer the files via PC (only SM as a 3rd party device no gameshark, armax, etc.) so I bought SM instead cause it's cheaper for me.
@Dintydick123 alright if you have swap magic you can get the noobie package from sksapps (or wherever) for the files, and get something called cd gen 3.0 to make your ISO from the "Noobie pack" files burn on to a CD. Get all these files on sksapps and I'll send some directions on how I make the ISO. It should boot with a swapmagic cd after you boot it.
@MistaHughes83 You still have to save to the memory card but all of the homebrew can be loaded from a flash drive instead of the memory card as FMCB will look on the usb device first before checking the memory card (this includes loading uLaunchELF).
Hey man...can you help me....how to play ps2 game using usb hard drive...my father just bought me a new hard drive for me ( 500 ) gb...so i do not waste my money to buy ps2 game...can you give me more detail about...how to play ps2 game using usb hard drive....i cant understand what is mcboot and how to use it... I REALLY HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME...THIS IS MY EMAIL ( nike_man619@yahoo.com) can you give me list what i need and how to do it step by step you can email me or reply at youtube (help me
@TheFiq635 Don't even bother with a USB hard drive. The USB ports on a PS2 are USB 1.1 which means that the data transfer rate is far too low to stream games on so when running a game via a USB hard drive you get skipping FMV, long load times and various other issues. Its more of a headache using a USB hard drive then using an internal IDE hard drive on a phat PS2 or just using ESR.
@SCiWiZZ9812 Chances are if it's freezing that your USB flash drive might not be compatible with the PS2. Try reformatting it in FAT or try using a different flash drive and see if that works. Also you could make sure your PS2's USB ports aren't full of dust which might also be causing that problem.
@Abhisekpppppppp First of all I already replied to that question that Miles52431 asked (check the comment under his) and there are many ways to hack the PS2 to run homebrew so you don't need a Codebreaker but it can help as one of the methods does require that you have a Codebreaker or Gameshark.
alright ive tried this thing a couple of times with all the programs and with a usb flash drive (formatted with my laptop)
but it still goes to that red screen
i alreaedy hav e a mod chip installed in my ps2 because i play burnt psx/ps2 games on my ps2.
I know there is something that im missing out on and i can t really figure it out and i would greatly appreciate it if you or anyone with expert advice can point out what it is that im doing wrong
@djozyd If you already have a mod chip on your PS2 then there is no reason for you to use this program unless you plan on taking it to a friend's house or something. Also just copying the files to a USB flash drive DOES NOT cause the PS2 to boot the flash drive. In fact the PS2 will never even read the USB ports unless software you load tells it to. In order to install FMCB to a memory card you have to use an unmodded PS2 so that it has full access to the original bios.
@djozyd Hm...well I suppose you could download one of the uLaunchELF boot CD images from sksapps and boot it using your mod chip. That will let your then load up any homebrew you want like emulators from a usb device and once uLaunchELF is loaded you can then swap the disc for one that has all of your roms on it or however you want to do it.
@Miles52431 If your PS2 Browser version is 2.50 or newer (which only the newer sliver ones have this version but some of the earlier ones may have an older browser version) then this will not work.
Ok so all I do is format my flash drive to FAT or 32 and then put the Free mcboot and other files on the flash drive then plug it in my ps2? it will start automaticly? or I have to press something ,then install it then put and iso game on my flashdrive and patch it and I can play ps2 games? without a disk just memorycard and flashdrive
@demonwolfdawg A USB flash drive is simply a way to store the installer so you can run it with other homebrew like uLaunchELF or by using other exploits. It will not run on it's own since the PS2 does not read anything from the USB ports unless it's told to by software such as certain games that use them. The Independence Exploit is one such way of running the FMCB Installer from the flash drive but that exploit only works on old, fat models.
@demonwolfdawg Well considering the version of the Action Replay that you would need to run the exploit I'm aware of is almost impossible to find now your best bet is to get a copy of Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or if you are willing to go through the trouble of blocking the sensors you can use the method that requires you to make a modified copy of a game you already own by replacing an ELF file on the disc with uLanchELF and loading that part of the game. Only certain games work with that method.
@demonwolfdawg Yeah pretty much. Free McBoot is basically a softmod that requires another softmod to install while at the same time replaces all the other softmods. I hope that makes sense because I think I just confused myself with that one.
soft mod my ps2(slim)(already done it) and I have a ps1 game called NFL Blitz 2000 so what do i do after that? (I will be able to burn a disc but right now my disc tray is broken it wont turn on)
@demonwolfdawg The Independence Exploit (the one that uses the PS1 game disc) only works on the old fat PS2s. If you are able to run homebrew on your PS2 at all then the hard part is done. All you have to do is load up uLaunchELF then run the FMCB Installer from there.
Oh I saw people on youtube softmoding tge ps2 slim booting up with a ps1 game then putting a burned ps1 game I thought maybe it would work ,But Why would I install free mcboot If I could use UsbAdvanced ,and so the only way for a ps2 slim to run Free mcboot is to get the action replay or swapmagic
@demonwolfdawg That's not softmodding that's the only known method to load a PS1 game on the PS2. It only works with SCPH-50000 and later models. And to answer your second question USBAdvanced has terrible compatibility and causes problems due to the PS2's very slow USB speeds and while Swap Magic is nice it can ware out your PS2 from all the swapping so with FMCB you can use ESR and boot a game by just putting it in the PS2 like normal.
@demonwolfdawg In that case your best bet would be to do the modified game swap method. This requires that you own the original copy of a certain game and make a burned copy with one of the files replaced in it. It also requires you to be able to do what is know as cog swapping which for the slim PS2 means jamming 3 sensors, one of which is in the PS2 on the motherboard under the left arm that holds the disc cover on. In some cases it may mean opening your PS2 to get to it.
So to be clear there arnt any ways of getting a burned ps2 game on your ps2 slim with a usb (with other stuff other then a usb) or without The origanal copy of the game
@demonwolfdawg Other then installing a mod chip there isn't any other way. Sony was smart when they designed the PS2 and it took them releasing their dev kit to the public for people to figure out how to hack it in the first place. From what I can tell the PS2 is one of the hardest systems to crack only because you have to go through all these little "tricks" in order to even get 1 piece of homebrew loaded on it.
Oh ok :(,Wow man thanks For all teh information you have help me and my friends at school alot ,ill just stick to Pcsx2 the ps2 emulator I just have to get a better computer my laptop can only run games at 30fps and then down to 22fps every few seconds :/
Heah Haldrie. Just to tell you, the game you are referring to is 007: Agent under fire. Also I heard 007:night fire will work also. I used Agent under Fire to softmod my ps2 with free mcboot. hope this helps
@Algeo2iphonegeek Yeah I was thinking specifically of that game when I mentioned that and there are several other games that are suppose to work as well. I plan on my next PS2 mods and hacks video to be about this very hack now that I have finally tried it for myself.
Speaking of this hack don't you think that it is way easier than the independence exploit? Also I was able to push the eject button when swapping the modified copy. Also I don't think it's necessary to make another hack video regarding 007 since the you-tuber "iMeAgainstTheWorld!" already did a good job. But I guess you could do better by explaining all the technical processes behind all of it. Even you do make another hack video, Will it be on youtube or bliptv. Nice rant though
@Algeo2iphonegeek Strange I figured the PS2 would reject the burned copy if you pressed the eject button. I'll have to try that out myself and see what happens and I'll checkout that guy's video. As far as where I'm going to post my next video...I'm not sure since (just like the changes to the channel pages) I'm starting to be able to tolerate most of the new changes here on YouTube. I still want to use blip but I may also still use YouTube for certain videos.
thanks, can i find codebreaker or ar max at gamestop because i dont know where to get it from but my friend has both so he's gonna bring it to me and so i can mod my ps2 and he also will get me a specialized memory card that has 356 mb of space, know i will get back to my 360 and ps3 to mod
FMCB only really requires that you already have a way to run homebrew so you can run the installer. The main reason I mention about the cheat systems is because they often have a feature that allows you to transfer save files to and from the memory card using a USB flash drive which is handy when using the Independence Exploit on a fat PS2.
The ESR Disc Patcher is a self executable program. Once you open it you will see a window that has a "Patch" button in it but you can also just drag and drop all of the images you want to patch to that window and will patch them all at once.
All you have to do is get the ESR Disc Patcher GUI and drag and drop the ISO to the program window and it will patch it. This only works on DVD games though and for double layer games like God of War you have first patch them with the Toxic DL Patch (found at sksapps) before you apply the ESR patch. The ESR patch just tricks the PS2 into thinking the disc is a DVD-Video disc which bypasses the check it normally does on game discs.
What do you mean it's "already modded"? The only real "mods" that I know of simply change files on the memory card so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to install another mod over your old one. In fact you can easily have both the Independence Exploit along with FMCB installed on the same memory card although there isn't much point in having both.
my memory card loaded backup games but doesnt save the game on memory card...because my free mc booth probably not installed correctly.....sorry for my bad english.....and one more thing..can i reset my memory card and install free mc both again ? HELP!
Do you mean backup game saves? When you load up uLaunchELF you can copy all the game saves to a USB flash drive and then format the memory card using the FMCB Installer to erase everything on it.
I've got a question. I just installed to FMCB into my ps2, scph 9000x-ish and everything. I've even saw the message saying it was successfully installed. Now the problem. It won't boot anything. Just like when you power up an ordinary ps2 and there's no dvd or cd inserted (browser and system configuration only) What seems to be the problem??
You may have one of the newer PS2s that blocked out FMCB in the bios. If your bios version is I think 2.5 or 2.6 or later then FMCB won't work with it.
i have certain games which run with lines across the screen and lack of color, such as budokai tenkaichi 3,*which is supposed to be working according to the compatibility list* and kengo 2
the budokai runs fine its just that there are the lines on the screen and its really painfull to watch ..plz help sumone.
It could be the fact that you are trying to play PAL games on a NTSC TV. I checked and saw that the TV standard for your country was NTSC so your best bet would be to look for games that were made for NTSC TVs.
but i really appreciate the help, i will try to continue doing my research on the subject and see how i can fix it. I will post when i find out so that way i may improve your knowledge :P. thanx m8
same problem i am having dear. i have done everything but fail. now i am trying for searching manualy exploit mem card. i dont know how it work. but if you solved your prob plz tell me how ok
I figued out my problem.. When your console has a version of scph 90006. The chances that the FMCB will launch is pretty much slim. However, you could always use Ulaunch app, you just need to find the iso somewhere on the net, You need to burn it on a cd then use the cd to boot the Ulaunch elf then viola, you can now launch the usb/ps2launcher.elf from the browser.
If you have one of the newer PS2 slims then you are out of luck with using any of the memory card exploits since they take advantage of the PS2's update system which the new slims have removed. If you plan on using FMCB you're better off just getting an older PS2 model which you should be able to get pretty cheap now.
@Haldrie thanks dear . now i am not going to do anything with my ps2 only play the game. i have one more quation. what kind of software is used to upload game on hdd ? and how it work?
That all depends on what type of PS2 you have. If you have a fat PS2 and you are using a standard IDE hard drive then you need HDLoader. If you have a slim you will need USBAdvance. My only issue with both of these is compatibility. A lot of games that don't work sometimes have patches for them but that still leave quite a few that don't work at all. As far as using a USB hard drive (for the slims mostly) the USB ports are v1.1 which causes skipping FMVs and very long load times.
Pressing R1 while the PS2 starts up will boot uLanuchELF automatically if you have a memory card with FMCB installed inserted. Otherwise you can simply choose an app from the main menu which, once you install FMCB, will now have several new options that FMCB has added to it that only appear with the hacked memory card inserted at boot. FMCB only modifies the data on the memory card and does not touch anything else so without the memory card inserted at boot the PS2 starts like normal.
You don't have to install FMCB to run homebrew (considering you have to be able to run homebrew just to install it) but it makes things a lot easier by limiting the steps it takes to load homebrew to simply inserting a memory card in the PS2. If using ESR is what you want to do then I recommend going ahead and installing FMCB to a memory card with ESR since FMCB will auto boot ESR when it detects an ESR patched game saving you a lot of time in loading your backup.
The reason for the patch is to trick the PS2 into thinking the disc is a standard DVD-Video disc so it doesn't do any security checks on it. The only way for you to run unpatched games is either using a swap tool like Cogswap Loader or Swap Magic or you have to install a mod chip. ESR patch games also still work with the swap tools. There is no way of applying any changes to a disc once it has been burned.
thanks! The problem is I already have swap magic and of all my burned games none is patched. So they probably won't work with Free Mcboot. Thats ok! I'll keep using Magic Swap.
First download FMCB and uLanchELF as well as ESR if you want to use it (links in the description). Then place the files on your USB flash drive (you can checkout my online guide link in the description for more information on getting the other apps installed with FMCB). Now all you have to do is find a way to get homebrew loaded on your PS2 and once you get uLanchELF loaded you can follow this video exactly to get it installed.
If you can't figure out how to run homebrew and you have a fat PS2 you can check out my Independence Exploit videos for one possible way. I've been meaning to make a more in depth FMCB Install Guide but have not made a lot of time to do it.
I've been using the test GUI which is a modification of r9b to allow you to edit the settings of ESR before it boots but it works with r9b dvdv direct as well. The ESR video I made is using the dvdv direct version since it loads faster with that and since most of the games work with it anyway..
witch Esr flie should i download to install on free mc boot ??? i have a 50001 SCPH fat ps2 also why it says free mcboot 1.8 A and and free mcboot B do i have to install part A and then B or can i just install B without A???
Free McBoot is made to run on PS2s that DO NOT have a mod chip so no to the first question. In order to get FMCB on your memory card you need to first use an already existing exploit on the PS2 to be able to load the FMCB Installer which will then install FMCB on your memory card. It is NOT possible to copy the FMCB files from one memory card to another as they are signed for that memory card only when they are installed.
@Haldrie when u install it does it format ur memory card? cuz i wanna do it but i have alot of good game saves and i only have one memory card and the explloit is coming from my frnds which has no space
You have a choice to format but it's not required only recommended. If you have a friend that has it on his memory card already or can boot homebrew yourself you can load up uLaunchELF and copy your saves to a USB flash drive, format, install FMCB and copy them back. Using a newly formatted memory card will prevent any unwanted behavior in FMCB. Also be aware that FMCB can take up as much as 3 to 4 MB of space so be sure you have enough free space before installing it.
That's the unfortunate downside to installing this exploit. This is one reason why some of the people on the official forums for this have offered to install it for people for free.
can you please tell me how to do the ps1 exploit so I can get to the screen you had at the beginning of the video, that way I can view the files on my usb on the ps2
Check out my videos titled "Haldrie's Mods and Hacks: PS2 Independence Exploit". They will tell you how to install the Independence Exploit on fat PS2 (note this DOES NOT work on a slim PS2).
In order to do this on a slim you will need either a copy of Action Replay Max which has the Max Media feature (newer ones have removed this feature due to the known exploit to hack the PS2) or a copy of CodeBreaker 3.6 or 3.8 which allows you to boot homebrew from a USB drive when loaded.
The files for the installer in this video are being stored on a USB flash drive. The first trick is getting a homebrew app known as uLaunchELF loaded and then launching the FMCB Installer from there which will then install FMCB to the memory card of your choice. While there are other ways of loading the installer I find it more effective to get uLaunchELF loaded first so there is no question if the installer will load from there or not.
Did you not hear me say this is "for (people) who already know how to do this and can already run homebrew" within the first 10 seconds of my video. This was done spear of the moment just a few days after hurricane Ike left us without power and I'm doing the whole video under generator power. The Independence Exploit videos are part of a series to show various methods for loading homebrew so that I can finally get to the Full Install Guide where I do mention exactly how to boot from the USB.
Also try not to be such an asshole with your comments next time. I do these videos for fun and without any kind of payment. I'm already not getting the feedback I really expected from these videos so that means I tend not to put them high on my priority list (hence why I haven't posted a video in a while). Your insulting comments don't exactly help make me want to make better videos. I've been working with new setups but nothing feels worthy of me posting yet.
How did you go about installing it and are you sure it froze? There is one part of the install that takes a while. You also need at least 3MB or more of free space on your memory card. Also what is the model number of the PS2 your are installing it on. The newer, silver colored slim models (BIOS version 2.60 or higher) won't work with FMCB.
A PS2 memory card, the FMCB Installer and some way to run homebrew on your PS2 (also a USB flash drive or a PSP to boot the installer from a USB drive which can only be done with homebrew). ESR is optional although I suspect that most people will want to include it. Links to both the FMCB Installer and ESR are in the description. As for how to run homebrew there are several ways to do it but all must be done without the aid of a mod chip. All methods I know of require additional PS2 software.
Yes but you will have about 2.5 to 3MB used by the FMCB files so be aware of that when saving a lot of games. If you boot your PS2 without the memory card in the PS2 will boot normally and you can then put the memory card in and use it like normal without loading the FMCB software if you just need to use it to like normal.
I can't really say as I don't have one and I haven't seen a compatibility list anywhere (nor have I really looked for one). Flash drive compatibility varies depending on what program you are using to access it so it may easily work for one thing on the PS2 and not work at all with another program. Homebrew devs do their best to try and get the best compatibility for flash drives but it all comes down to trial and error.
i hav a question, when you finish the installation, can you remove the flashdrive?
umadbroooooo1 1 week ago
@umadbroooooo1 Yes, unless you have homebrew that you want to load from it you can remove the USB flash drive from your PS2 since, provided you installed everything correctly, all of the stuff from the APPS folder in the Install folder should now be on the memory card and everything will be loaded from there. There is a failsafe however where FMCB will check the USB first for a copy of uLaunchELF so you can still access homebrew even if uLaunchELF wasn't installed properly.

can i use mcboot to play games from a usb flash disk ??
aminohnedich 1 month ago
@aminohnedich There is homebrew you can run that will allow you to run games from USB however the usb ports on the PS2 are v1.1 speeds which is much slower then the actual DVD drive so many games won't work very well via usb if at all. Long load times, skipping FMVs and random crashes can occur depending on the type of games you are trying to play. Only a small fraction of PS2 games will run perfectly. The only other alternative is to get an phat PS2 and use an IDE hard drive.

DARKZERO216psn 1 month ago
@DARKZERO216psn Not on it's own but it makes the process a lot easier. What it's doing is detecting that the game has been patched a certain way and automatically loading a homebrew app called ESR which then loads the patched game. You have to already be able to run homebrew on your PS2 in order to install this.
Haldrie 1 month ago
Is ESR used to just play backup games or does it have to be used with FMCB to play a backup? All I get is a black screen with ESR alone and BTW i use a ps2 slim, any help?
Mojay21 1 month ago
@Mojay21 ESR can be run on it's own but the discs have to be patched so that they appear like DVD Video discs to the PS2 so it doesn't try to do a disc check to verify if they are legit. The ESR link in the video description also has a link to the patching program.

when i plug my usb why dosent it show up i have all the files needed
Thecomix00 2 months ago

You can NOT just put the files on a usb flash drive and expect it to run.

how i can isntall this shiet if my ps2 dont read flash drive's??? my ps is moded
SpirosDeath 6 months ago
@SpirosDeath FMCB was designed to work with non-modded PS2s. You would have to find a way to run homebrew without a mod chip. Many homebrew programs like uLaunchELF can read flash drives formatted to FAT or FAT32. A new version of FMCB that was released very recently can be installed using the PS3 PS2 memcard adaptor on a PC. I have yet to play with that version though and I don't have one of those adaptors...yet.

lilfreakeeshan 7 months ago
@lilfreakeeshan If you listen to my introduction I mention that this is for "those of you that can already run homebrew" meaning that this WILL NOT simply run off of a usb device just by copying the files over. In order to run the installer you have to first run some kind of exploit on your PS2 that will allow you to load up homebrew applications. Also NTSC is a video format not a hard drive format. I think what you meant to say was NTFS which is NOT compatible with the PS2.
Haldrie 7 months ago
@lilfreakeeshan One thing I would also like to mention is that I recently found news that new software has been made that will let you install FMCB using a PS3 PS2 Memory Card Adaptor. I plan on getting one myself and showing how it's done within the month.
Haldrie 7 months ago
is this all i will need to play my backups or do i need another program ?
lostnalone87 7 months ago
@lostnalone87 FMCB alone only lets your run homebrew. It's ESR that lets you run backups and FMCB has a feature to auto load it when a patched game is detected (provided it was installed correctly that is).

ComingToDoDamage 9 months ago
@ComingToDoDamage This is normal if you don't have a config file which you normally won't. Once you have uLanuchELF save any settings you change it will generate a new config file and won't show that message anymore.

If u take the memory card with mcboot out can u play normally without it ??
veyron201 10 months ago
@veyron201 The exploit is only loaded if you have the memory card in when you turn on the PS2. If you take it out and reset the PS2 it will start up like normal. You can still load regular PS2 games when FMCB loaded as well. It only loads ESR if it detects a patched game.
Haldrie 10 months ago
@Haldrie Oh so its not a permanent mod
so if the memory card is out the mcboot menu with browser andso is gone .
and can your ps2 get damaged of it ??
grtz
veyron201 10 months ago
@veyron201 Correct and there is no risk of damage to your PS2. I can't really think of any possible way this can brick your PS2 or anything considering how it works.
Haldrie 10 months ago
@Haldrie oké great im going to try it with mcboot 1.8b (the newbie package)
veyron201 10 months ago
@Haldrie oh yeah are there ps2 who can't do this because i read something about that and how do i patch a cd/dvd
veyron201 10 months ago
@veyron201 The ESR link in the description has a download for the ESR GUI Patcher (easiest and most noob friendly patcher in my opinion) which is a simple drag 'n drop program to patch your games with. All PS2 will work with this EXCEPT any PS2 that has bios version 2.50 or higher (mostly the new silver PS2s that were released after the price drop).

how do u know if ur flash drive is the right formate
MYDRAGGIN84 1 year ago
@MYDRAGGIN84 I just has to be formatted to FAT or FAT32. Generally Windows will default to FAT if it's a flash drive of less then 2GB and FAT32 if it's 2-4GB and NTFS if it's 4GB or more but will still give you the option to format it FAT32. If I recall correctly you don't get the NTFS format option for anything less then 2GB. This of course is only for then windows formatter but you can use any drive format tool.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie okay is it ulanuch that i need to have so i t can load to a mc
MYDRAGGIN84 1 year ago

MYDRAGGIN84 1 year ago
@MYDRAGGIN84 I customized my settings by turning off the scrolling feature and moving it over until it looked close enough to the original browser options as possible. If you have SMS.ELF (simple media systems...or something like that) and HDLOADER.ELF (whichever version of hdloader you want to use) in the INSTALL folder when you install FMCB then it will automatically add links to them on the main browser. Otherwise you will have to add them manually in the Configurator.

can i remove free mcboot on my ps2?
Dasher164 1 year ago
@Dasher164 FMCB is only installed on the memory card and will only load if you have the memory card in either slot 1 or slot 2 when you turn on your PS2.Without the memory card inserted at boot your PS2 will boot like normal and you will still be able to use the memory card like normal since the PS2 only checks the memory card for that kind of software when you first turn it on.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie does reformatting the memory card remove it? I wanna install the latest version
Dasher164 1 year ago
@Dasher164 Formatting erases everything from the memory card but as long as you are still in the installer you can install FMCB as long as the installer isn't stored on the memory card (which you should have in on a USB flash drive anyway). It's only once you turn off or restart your PS2 (or remove the device the installer is on) that you can no longer use the installer and if you didn't (re)install FMCB then you will have to use whatever exploit you did to get FMCB installed before.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@lazydany1 You need some way of getting homebrew loaded on the PS2 which isn't exactly easy unless you own a special disc like swap magic or one of the "cheat" discs. There is a method where you can modify a file on a game disc you own, burn a copy and then do a cog swap to switch the real disc for the burned one to get it to load the modified file but that only works on a small handful of games and the cogswap can be very tricky if you own a slim PS2.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@LAGxTV I've heard there is a modified codebreaker.elf file that you can use to boot ESR.elf but I have yet to find it myself. It was originally made for use with HDLoader.
Haldrie 1 year ago
WTF I have everything, but it never takes me to the install screen..
cemetary665isVictor 1 year ago
@cemetary665isVictor That's because this WILL NOT BOOT DIRECTLY FROM A USB FLASH DRIVE! I said in the video that this was for people who "already know how to run homebrew" on their PS2 as the installer is a homebrew application and needs to be booted from a homebrew launcher like uLaunchELF.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie Duh I had Swapmagic to boot a disk w/ the exploit with the usd files, but free_mcboot.elf would never launch and freeze even when I chaged the name to SWAPMAGIC.ELF and with the SWAPMAGIC folder all on the root after booting the ulaunchelf disk (which actually worked, but froze upon booting. However I managed to get with cdgenps2 when I made an ISO through the program with the FMCB files on it. Burned it and it took me right to install w/ SM, it's so much easier than the ulaunchelf.
cemetary665isVictor 1 year ago
@cemetary665isVictor I don't think it was ever made to boot with the swap magic method. I usually suggest booting uLaunchELF first because it guarantees that it will boot and it gives you a chance to backup any saves you might have before installing.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie Well you have to understand that the same FMCB 1.8 files are put into the iso along with other stuff I followed straight from the guide on sks apps. I know ulaunchelf is usually easier for most people, and I tried it with SM + my usb's FMCB files in the correct folders as proven on sks apps and on gamedexerity's channel. I don't remember the exact step, but I'll just send a link cause I installed exactly as I would with the actual MC (somewhat diff), but by manually copy/paste the file
cemetary665isVictor 1 year ago
@Haldrie dude trust me sks.apps changed my view on softmodding go to sksapps.com for the esiest ps2 expliots and apps. Look up the tutorial I sent you, follow and it should bring up the installer pretty fast. True I can't use just a usb, but all I needed was cdgenps2 and the noobie package along with my 3rd party device (swap magic) and of course the blank cd for booting on my sensor modded ps2 slim. The disk booted the FMCB 1.8 for me and with no elflaunch. Check it out dude I wouldn't BS..
cemetary665isVictor 1 year ago
@cemetary665isVictor That may work for people that have swap magic but most of the people that have left comments on my videos and that I've talked to about this (as well as myself) do not own a copy of swap magic. The reason I boot this with uLaunchELF is because the other exploits I have worked with will not boot the installer directly but they will boot uLaunchELF. Also since hacking my PS2 I have been using uLaunchELF as a save manager to transfer saves to and from my memory cards.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie It's pretty much the same thing if you have swap magic except it actually does boot it directly (and from the cd) like ulaunchelf, but w/o needing to go to the elf file manually. I had problems getting these on my memcard with the ulaunch cd/usb cause I can't manage my memcard since I don't have a method to transfer the files via PC (only SM as a 3rd party device no gameshark, armax, etc.) so I bought SM instead cause it's cheaper for me.
cemetary665isVictor 1 year ago
hay mate i think im having the same problem, can i please have some help with your method of installing free mcboot
Dintydick123 1 year ago
@Dintydick123 alright if you have swap magic you can get the noobie package from sksapps (or wherever) for the files, and get something called cd gen 3.0 to make your ISO from the "Noobie pack" files burn on to a CD. Get all these files on sksapps and I'll send some directions on how I make the ISO. It should boot with a swapmagic cd after you boot it.

Ok....one question...i have someone to put all this stuff on my memory card.
My question is: Will I be able to save my game progress to the memory still?
Or can I save my progress to a usb flash drive?
I ask this because I dont want to do it if I cant save my progress from my backups.
MistaHughes83 1 year ago
@MistaHughes83 You still have to save to the memory card but all of the homebrew can be loaded from a flash drive instead of the memory card as FMCB will look on the usb device first before checking the memory card (this includes loading uLaunchELF).

TheFiq635 1 year ago
@TheFiq635 Don't even bother with a USB hard drive. The USB ports on a PS2 are USB 1.1 which means that the data transfer rate is far too low to stream games on so when running a game via a USB hard drive you get skipping FMV, long load times and various other issues. Its more of a headache using a USB hard drive then using an internal IDE hard drive on a phat PS2 or just using ESR.

SCiWiZZ9812 1 year ago

I know there is something that im missing out on and i can t really figure it out and i would greatly appreciate it if you or anyone with expert advice can point out what it is that im doing wrong
thnx
djozyd 1 year ago
@djozyd If you already have a mod chip on your PS2 then there is no reason for you to use this program unless you plan on taking it to a friend's house or something. Also just copying the files to a USB flash drive DOES NOT cause the PS2 to boot the flash drive. In fact the PS2 will never even read the USB ports unless software you load tells it to. In order to install FMCB to a memory card you have to use an unmodded PS2 so that it has full access to the original bios.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie well my main purpose was to try and run emulators off this
(i know it sounds lame but after giving away my old systems i felt like playing it on the ps2)
and as regards to disabling the modchip i dont know if u could even do that
djozyd 1 year ago
@djozyd Hm...well I suppose you could download one of the uLaunchELF boot CD images from sksapps and boot it using your mod chip. That will let your then load up any homebrew you want like emulators from a usb device and once uLaunchELF is loaded you can then swap the disc for one that has all of your roms on it or however you want to do it.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie thanks for the reply
ok im gona burn the image today and let u know how it works out

Does Free Mcboot and the memory card exploit method work for Slim silver ps2s?
Miles52431 1 year ago
@Miles52431 If your PS2 Browser version is 2.50 or newer (which only the newer sliver ones have this version but some of the earlier ones may have an older browser version) then this will not work.
Haldrie 1 year ago
Ok so all I do is format my flash drive to FAT or 32 and then put the Free mcboot and other files on the flash drive then plug it in my ps2? it will start automaticly? or I have to press something ,then install it then put and iso game on my flashdrive and patch it and I can play ps2 games? without a disk just memorycard and flashdrive
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg A USB flash drive is simply a way to store the installer so you can run it with other homebrew like uLaunchELF or by using other exploits. It will not run on it's own since the PS2 does not read anything from the USB ports unless it's told to by software such as certain games that use them. The Independence Exploit is one such way of running the FMCB Installer from the flash drive but that exploit only works on old, fat models.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
So what would be the way to run it on the ps2 slim?
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg Well considering the version of the Action Replay that you would need to run the exploit I'm aware of is almost impossible to find now your best bet is to get a copy of Swap Magic 3.6 or 3.8 or if you are willing to go through the trouble of blocking the sensors you can use the method that requires you to make a modified copy of a game you already own by replacing an ELF file on the disc with uLanchELF and loading that part of the game. Only certain games work with that method.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
Uh you mean the soft mod?
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg Yeah pretty much. Free McBoot is basically a softmod that requires another softmod to install while at the same time replaces all the other softmods. I hope that makes sense because I think I just confused myself with that one.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
Ok what now
soft mod my ps2(slim)(already done it) and I have a ps1 game called NFL Blitz 2000 so what do i do after that? (I will be able to burn a disc but right now my disc tray is broken it wont turn on)
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg The Independence Exploit (the one that uses the PS1 game disc) only works on the old fat PS2s. If you are able to run homebrew on your PS2 at all then the hard part is done. All you have to do is load up uLaunchELF then run the FMCB Installer from there.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
Oh I saw people on youtube softmoding tge ps2 slim booting up with a ps1 game then putting a burned ps1 game I thought maybe it would work ,But Why would I install free mcboot If I could use UsbAdvanced ,and so the only way for a ps2 slim to run Free mcboot is to get the action replay or swapmagic
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg That's not softmodding that's the only known method to load a PS1 game on the PS2. It only works with SCPH-50000 and later models. And to answer your second question USBAdvanced has terrible compatibility and causes problems due to the PS2's very slow USB speeds and while Swap Magic is nice it can ware out your PS2 from all the swapping so with FMCB you can use ESR and boot a game by just putting it in the PS2 like normal.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
So Im confused Is there any way to play burned ps2 games on ps2 slim with out swap magic or action replay My mom doesnt like to buy stuff online
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg In that case your best bet would be to do the modified game swap method. This requires that you own the original copy of a certain game and make a burned copy with one of the files replaced in it. It also requires you to be able to do what is know as cog swapping which for the slim PS2 means jamming 3 sensors, one of which is in the PS2 on the motherboard under the left arm that holds the disc cover on. In some cases it may mean opening your PS2 to get to it.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
Oh I thought the cog swap was the soft mod?
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg Not really. It's just a way of swapping a real disc for a copied one without the PS2 realizing the swap was made.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie
So to be clear there arnt any ways of getting a burned ps2 game on your ps2 slim with a usb (with other stuff other then a usb) or without The origanal copy of the game
demonwolfdawg 1 year ago
@demonwolfdawg Other then installing a mod chip there isn't any other way. Sony was smart when they designed the PS2 and it took them releasing their dev kit to the public for people to figure out how to hack it in the first place. From what I can tell the PS2 is one of the hardest systems to crack only because you have to go through all these little "tricks" in order to even get 1 piece of homebrew loaded on it.

Algeo2iphonegeek 1 year ago
@Algeo2iphonegeek Strange I figured the PS2 would reject the burned copy if you pressed the eject button. I'll have to try that out myself and see what happens and I'll checkout that guy's video. As far as where I'm going to post my next video...I'm not sure since (just like the changes to the channel pages) I'm starting to be able to tolerate most of the new changes here on YouTube. I still want to use blip but I may also still use YouTube for certain videos.

thanks, can i find codebreaker or ar max at gamestop because i dont know where to get it from but my friend has both so he's gonna bring it to me and so i can mod my ps2 and he also will get me a specialized memory card that has 356 mb of space, know i will get back to my 360 and ps3 to mod
thank you very much for responding
TheAliGamer 1 year ago
man you are the best the best, so you dont need codebreaker or ar max or any cheating system, just a memory card exploit with uLauanch.Elf Right.
TheAliGamer 1 year ago
FMCB only really requires that you already have a way to run homebrew so you can run the installer. The main reason I mention about the cheat systems is because they often have a feature that allows you to transfer save files to and from the memory card using a USB flash drive which is handy when using the Independence Exploit on a fat PS2.

@RiderOfGreece
The ESR Disc Patcher is a self executable program. Once you open it you will see a window that has a "Patch" button in it but you can also just drag and drop all of the images you want to patch to that window and will patch them all at once.
Haldrie 1 year ago
All you have to do is get the ESR Disc Patcher GUI and drag and drop the ISO to the program window and it will patch it. This only works on DVD games though and for double layer games like God of War you have first patch them with the Toxic DL Patch (found at sksapps) before you apply the ESR patch. The ESR patch just tricks the PS2 into thinking the disc is a DVD-Video disc which bypasses the check it normally does on game discs.
Haldrie 1 year ago
Only if they have been patched for ESR. Normal 1:1 backups won't work.
Haldrie 1 year ago
But my memory card is already modded, can i modded again ??
ppscviorel93 1 year ago
What do you mean it's "already modded"? The only real "mods" that I know of simply change files on the memory card so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to install another mod over your old one. In fact you can easily have both the Independence Exploit along with FMCB installed on the same memory card although there isn't much point in having both.
Haldrie 1 year ago
my memory card loaded backup games but doesnt save the game on memory card...because my free mc booth probably not installed correctly.....sorry for my bad english.....and one more thing..can i reset my memory card and install free mc both again ? HELP!
ppscviorel93 1 year ago
Do you mean backup game saves? When you load up uLaunchELF you can copy all the game saves to a USB flash drive and then format the memory card using the FMCB Installer to erase everything on it.

MACKMAN10000 1 year ago
I've got a question. I just installed to FMCB into my ps2, scph 9000x-ish and everything. I've even saw the message saying it was successfully installed. Now the problem. It won't boot anything. Just like when you power up an ordinary ps2 and there's no dvd or cd inserted (browser and system configuration only) What seems to be the problem??
KusabiJr 1 year ago
You may have one of the newer PS2s that blocked out FMCB in the bios. If your bios version is I think 2.5 or 2.6 or later then FMCB won't work with it.

i have certain games which run with lines across the screen and lack of color, such as budokai tenkaichi 3,*which is supposed to be working according to the compatibility list* and kengo 2
the budokai runs fine its just that there are the lines on the screen and its really painfull to watch ..plz help sumone.
VioletKIng69 1 year ago
It could be the fact that you are trying to play PAL games on a NTSC TV. I checked and saw that the TV standard for your country was NTSC so your best bet would be to look for games that were made for NTSC TVs.
Haldrie 1 year ago
funny enough the ntsc's are the ones which really give me problems. I downloaded jap games and they all seem to work.
VioletKIng69 1 year ago
but i really appreciate the help, i will try to continue doing my research on the subject and see how i can fix it. I will post when i find out so that way i may improve your knowledge :P. thanx m8

same problem i am having dear. i have done everything but fail. now i am trying for searching manualy exploit mem card. i dont know how it work. but if you solved your prob plz tell me how ok
lfefil 1 year ago
I figued out my problem.. When your console has a version of scph 90006. The chances that the FMCB will launch is pretty much slim. However, you could always use Ulaunch app, you just need to find the iso somewhere on the net, You need to burn it on a cd then use the cd to boot the Ulaunch elf then viola, you can now launch the usb/ps2launcher.elf from the browser.
KusabiJr 1 year ago
Unless you have a copy of Swap Magic you won't be able to load a burned disc on your PS2.
Haldrie 1 year ago
If you have one of the newer PS2 slims then you are out of luck with using any of the memory card exploits since they take advantage of the PS2's update system which the new slims have removed. If you plan on using FMCB you're better off just getting an older PS2 model which you should be able to get pretty cheap now.
Haldrie 1 year ago
@Haldrie thanks dear . now i am not going to do anything with my ps2 only play the game. i have one more quation. what kind of software is used to upload game on hdd ? and how it work?
lfefil 1 year ago
That all depends on what type of PS2 you have. If you have a fat PS2 and you are using a standard IDE hard drive then you need HDLoader. If you have a slim you will need USBAdvance. My only issue with both of these is compatibility. A lot of games that don't work sometimes have patches for them but that still leave quite a few that don't work at all. As far as using a USB hard drive (for the slims mostly) the USB ports are v1.1 which causes skipping FMVs and very long load times.

man i need a modbo chip?
RapAdy1 2 years ago
So i put free mc boot on my memory card and then press R1 at boot up?
demonwolfdawg 2 years ago
Pressing R1 while the PS2 starts up will boot uLanuchELF automatically if you have a memory card with FMCB installed inserted. Otherwise you can simply choose an app from the main menu which, once you install FMCB, will now have several new options that FMCB has added to it that only appear with the hacked memory card inserted at boot. FMCB only modifies the data on the memory card and does not touch anything else so without the memory card inserted at boot the PS2 starts like normal.
Haldrie 2 years ago
@Haldrie
So how do I install FMCB In the first place?
demonwolfdawg 2 years ago
You don't have to install FMCB to run homebrew (considering you have to be able to run homebrew just to install it) but it makes things a lot easier by limiting the steps it takes to load homebrew to simply inserting a memory card in the PS2. If using ESR is what you want to do then I recommend going ahead and installing FMCB to a memory card with ESR since FMCB will auto boot ESR when it detects an ESR patched game saving you a lot of time in loading your backup.
Haldrie 2 years ago
is there any way to play games that aren't ESR patched? If there isn't, is there a way to patch games that were already burned into DVDs?
felixandnaruto 1 year ago
The reason for the patch is to trick the PS2 into thinking the disc is a standard DVD-Video disc so it doesn't do any security checks on it. The only way for you to run unpatched games is either using a swap tool like Cogswap Loader or Swap Magic or you have to install a mod chip. ESR patch games also still work with the swap tools. There is no way of applying any changes to a disc once it has been burned.
Haldrie 1 year ago
thanks! The problem is I already have swap magic and of all my burned games none is patched. So they probably won't work with Free Mcboot. Thats ok! I'll keep using Magic Swap.
felixandnaruto 1 year ago
First download FMCB and uLanchELF as well as ESR if you want to use it (links in the description). Then place the files on your USB flash drive (you can checkout my online guide link in the description for more information on getting the other apps installed with FMCB). Now all you have to do is find a way to get homebrew loaded on your PS2 and once you get uLanchELF loaded you can follow this video exactly to get it installed.
Haldrie 2 years ago
If you can't figure out how to run homebrew and you have a fat PS2 you can check out my Independence Exploit videos for one possible way. I've been meaning to make a more in depth FMCB Install Guide but have not made a lot of time to do it.
Haldrie 2 years ago
and also ESR beta r9A and B??
princevinny97 2 years ago
I've been using the test GUI which is a modification of r9b to allow you to edit the settings of ESR before it boots but it works with r9b dvdv direct as well. The ESR video I made is using the dvdv direct version since it loads faster with that and since most of the games work with it anyway..

witch Esr flie should i download to install on free mc boot ??? i have a 50001 SCPH fat ps2 also why it says free mcboot 1.8 A and and free mcboot B do i have to install part A and then B or can i just install B without A???
princevinny97 2 years ago
Hi,
Do i need a mod chip to run mcboot?
also how do you get the software onto the memory card?
MattWilkinson188 2 years ago
no you need Swap Magic.
ddanieldd1 2 years ago
Free McBoot is made to run on PS2s that DO NOT have a mod chip so no to the first question. In order to get FMCB on your memory card you need to first use an already existing exploit on the PS2 to be able to load the FMCB Installer which will then install FMCB on your memory card. It is NOT possible to copy the FMCB files from one memory card to another as they are signed for that memory card only when they are installed.
Haldrie 2 years ago
@Haldrie when u install it does it format ur memory card? cuz i wanna do it but i have alot of good game saves and i only have one memory card and the explloit is coming from my frnds which has no space
Yigo91193 2 years ago
You have a choice to format but it's not required only recommended. If you have a friend that has it on his memory card already or can boot homebrew yourself you can load up uLaunchELF and copy your saves to a USB flash drive, format, install FMCB and copy them back. Using a newly formatted memory card will prevent any unwanted behavior in FMCB. Also be aware that FMCB can take up as much as 3 to 4 MB of space so be sure you have enough free space before installing it.

so if i have a mod chipd ps2 it not gonna work :( noooo becuse i have a mod chipd ps2 :(
kodkillen96 2 years ago
That's the unfortunate downside to installing this exploit. This is one reason why some of the people on the official forums for this have offered to install it for people for free.
Haldrie 2 years ago
can you please tell me how to do the ps1 exploit so I can get to the screen you had at the beginning of the video, that way I can view the files on my usb on the ps2
basketball0725 2 years ago
Check out my videos titled "Haldrie's Mods and Hacks: PS2 Independence Exploit". They will tell you how to install the Independence Exploit on fat PS2 (note this DOES NOT work on a slim PS2).
Haldrie 2 years ago
is there a way to do it on the slim ps2
basketball0725 2 years ago
In order to do this on a slim you will need either a copy of Action Replay Max which has the Max Media feature (newer ones have removed this feature due to the known exploit to hack the PS2) or a copy of CodeBreaker 3.6 or 3.8 which allows you to boot homebrew from a USB drive when loaded.
Haldrie 2 years ago
how do you get free mcboot on a memory card?
keasheam 2 years ago
The files for the installer in this video are being stored on a USB flash drive. The first trick is getting a homebrew app known as uLaunchELF loaded and then launching the FMCB Installer from there which will then install FMCB to the memory card of your choice. While there are other ways of loading the installer I find it more effective to get uLaunchELF loaded first so there is no question if the installer will load from there or not.

real helpfulk guide dumbass you dont even show how to boot the stupid usb drive with some boot disk
L0NEWANDERER 2 years ago
Did you not hear me say this is "for (people) who already know how to do this and can already run homebrew" within the first 10 seconds of my video. This was done spear of the moment just a few days after hurricane Ike left us without power and I'm doing the whole video under generator power. The Independence Exploit videos are part of a series to show various methods for loading homebrew so that I can finally get to the Full Install Guide where I do mention exactly how to boot from the USB.
Haldrie 2 years ago
Also try not to be such an asshole with your comments next time. I do these videos for fun and without any kind of payment. I'm already not getting the feedback I really expected from these videos so that means I tend not to put them high on my priority list (hence why I haven't posted a video in a while). Your insulting comments don't exactly help make me want to make better videos. I've been working with new setups but nothing feels worthy of me posting yet.

When ever I have it try to install onto the MS it will just freeze. Any idea how to fix this?
claymore546 2 years ago
How did you go about installing it and are you sure it froze? There is one part of the install that takes a while. You also need at least 3MB or more of free space on your memory card. Also what is the model number of the PS2 your are installing it on. The newer, silver colored slim models (BIOS version 2.60 or higher) won't work with FMCB.
Haldrie 2 years ago
what you need to install the free mc boot
karlitron45 2 years ago
A PS2 memory card, the FMCB Installer and some way to run homebrew on your PS2 (also a USB flash drive or a PSP to boot the installer from a USB drive which can only be done with homebrew). ESR is optional although I suspect that most people will want to include it. Links to both the FMCB Installer and ESR are in the description. As for how to run homebrew there are several ways to do it but all must be done without the aid of a mod chip. All methods I know of require additional PS2 software.

Can I save My game saves to a memmorry card that I saved McBoot ??
dovyduosius 2 years ago
Yes but you will have about 2.5 to 3MB used by the FMCB files so be aware of that when saving a lot of games. If you boot your PS2 without the memory card in the PS2 will boot normally and you can then put the memory card in and use it like normal without loading the FMCB software if you just need to use it to like normal.

very hard

Not really if you already have a way to hack the PS2. If not for the Independence Exploit I would have never been able to get this installed.

can i use a sandisk (8GB,FAT32) usb stick to install the elf on memory card
mykor2 2 years ago
I can't really say as I don't have one and I haven't seen a compatibility list anywhere (nor have I really looked for one). Flash drive compatibility varies depending on what program you are using to access it so it may easily work for one thing on the PS2 and not work at all with another program. Homebrew devs do their best to try and get the best compatibility for flash drives but it all comes down to trial and error.
