I think that Sharapova's german-porno-screams everytime she hits the ball are more distracting than standing in the middle of the court while your opponent is serving.
This is ridiculous! First of all, I don't know why they are paying so much attention to Radwanska's in-court staying during Sharapova's serve. This wasn't the reason for winning - it was all about consistency and taking advantage of Maria's errors (I would rather say, Sharapova lost this match at her own request). And I've NEVER seen Justine Henin screaming "Allez!" after unforced error by her opponent. It's Sharapova's speciality. So, dear Tracy, your example is rather unfortunate.
I agree with Jim, not Tracy here. In tennis you should obey the mores, even if the laws of the game give you certain liberties. In cricket and football, which are possibly based more on unwritten rules than tennis, it's imperative, the same should go in tennis.
Having said that we need a Happy Gilmore of the professional tennis world. Someone who does the ridin' the bull and asks the crowd to make a little noise for him when he serves. Wouldn't that be a treat
I''ll never understand why people always say "You'll never see Roger Feder do this or that" as if Federer is the anointed saint of tennis or something
Don't care for the Sharapova groupie, BUT I must agree with Tracy on this one. It's not outside of the rules to step in, whether one is retreating from that position or not. As professional players, they shouldn't be so thrown off by the antics of an opponent. Personally, when I step way inside the baseline for a 2nd serve, I'm planning on staying put and ripping the return. Once a player tried stepping way in on my 2nd serves, so I went hard right at him each time until he backed up, not DF.
@Houssak What're you talking about? Serena RARELY takes injury timeouts, and how can you bully an opponent without physically touching them? If someone is intimidated by another player and that player's game, then that is a mental problem that they have.
jim has right. yes justine is screaming allez cos french is her language...so many other player scream come on all the time... even during the point. tracy just likes american players.
for the first time in my life... i agree with everything that tracy austin said. jim and that other guy who knows nothing about tennis can go screw themselves. aggie wona and she knew pova's serve was shit then so she made her use a unreliable part of her game. she one far and square..pova just didnt come to play
Austin is an idiot. Justine yelling Allez? How many poeple now say "come on" on other's mistakes... EVERYONE... AUSTIN SHOULD GO HANG HERSELF. She's irrelevant.
well, you can stand wherever you want to return the ball. If Sharapova's second serve was hard enough, Radwanka would not be able to return when she stood to close.
Courier is a jerk. I like Tracy, she is very articulate, and said things that real and reasonable. She has less ego than many former top players
No way is John McEnroe the best commentator. If someone brings up his career he'll go on forever. I met the guy and he was an absolute prick. I prefer Mary Joe Fernandez and Mary Carillo. I also really like Pat McEnroe.
You must of brought up the 84 French Open to Johny Mac and he became an instant prick. LOL. Ya most sport superstars are pricks, i live near Lebron James and he's always a prick.
Courier is correct! She is playing dumb now that she is retired and washed up.. She was one of the biggest complainers when she was at her peak for those 4 months!
it is unsportsmanlike though i have to admit, if ur standing inside the baseline purely as a means of trying to win the point then fine, but otherwise its just off putting for the server
Tracy Austin has no manners at all. She merely directed her attention to that other guy and being a cheapo and preventing Jim getting his sound argument across (not that mattered anyway because Jim actaully 'won' the debate as implied by the other guy questioning Tracy's argument). Yes, Jim may be arrogant by virtue of male dominance, but his argument of 'sportmanship on the professional level in PRE-point sitution' is much more valid than Tracy's 'POST-point' argument,
Are you kidding me? From the looks of it, the way Jim rudely dismissed Tracy's comments by gesturing while she was still talking looked the more childish. Just because he didn't agree with Tracy, he went on with the rudeness and in fact attacked Tracy on a personal level by saying "Tracy, America's sweetheart". He might be right but he's not a gentleman.
This is how it is in ANY sports - alot of debate & talk about "This" and "That". Tennis is still considered a gentleman's game. Austin and Courier are just debating (not being argumentative) about the "Coulda" "shoulda" "woulda" of tennis - for the sake of television ratings.
humm, lemme see here, I rather have an opponent do wot radwanska is doing on serve (legal/legit tactics) than someone who used steroid to beat me....The lesser of the two evils.
I am not into tennis, but this behavior from Jim Courier was so high school-ish. He was just unprofessional as a commentator. He could make his point without being so arrogant.
Tracy Austin is annnoying she always acts like Sharapova is the best and that's bullshit. Sharapova is not as good as the Williams Sisters or Justine Henin. Sharapova is good nothing special. If Sharapova can't handle her opponent moving around she's not paying attention to her OWN GAME. This girl Radwanska is SMART she is solid player and her game improves every single year. She is ALREADY in the WTA top 10 she is just that good.
Tracy was in fact defending Radwanska and not Sharapova. She said that Sharapova being a pro shouldn't have been bothered at all by Radwanska. It was Courier who was for Sharapova. So why was Tracy getting the heat?
Sorry, but Jim is blowing a lot of hot air here. Just the other day when he was covering the Djokovic match he pointed out that Novak went to change his wristband, not because he needed to, but to get a swig of water and buy some more time. Meanwhile, Robredo was at the baseline waiting to serve. Novak did what he needed to win the match, and Jim didn't fly off the handle then.
It was childish, but Maria should have handled it. I doubt it would have fazed Graf or Seles.
What was the argument about? Of course Tracy Austin was right. The pros do whatever it takes to win within the rules or even outside the rules if they can get away with it. Standing inside of the baseline to receive serve is perfectly legit and practiced by countless pros.
Courier is definitely wrong. He's thinking very naively. these days, different tactics are used to get into an opponents head and Tracy is right, Radwanska did well to get in Sharapova's head. Courier, you're an idiot.
Courier was very jealous of Agassi during their playing days. I remember a magazine was doing a cover story on AA and went to courier for his thoughts: "I think he's just a waiter's son from a tract house who never knew what was expected of him. He's really quite boyish - be gentle." What class, huh?
regardless of whether or not anyone thinks it is gamesmanship on the part of Radwanska, the fact that she stood in on second serves is not the reason she one the match. She just outclassed Maria.
outclassing is when both players are playing their best and one comes up with something special to win...clearly that wasn't this match...radwanska was tacticly smart (which is basically her game)
He was wrong , cheers from Poland, Why he was ? because she is still up in ranking now she is 19 and will be better no matter what blond on the right said, what was that ? .....
How can people call Radwanska a cheat for tactically outclassing Sharapova? Not to mention that Sharapova is the biggest cheat in tennis. She's never played a match in her life without enormous amounts of gamesmanship, deliberate intimidation of opponents, shrieking, the loud aggressive "come on" that she does. Sharapova is the worst of the worst. Major hypocrites around here..
Don't see the point. The Williams sisters have always stood inside the baseline to receive serve, purely to intimidate the server. It works well, too, so what's wrong with it? You must exploit every possible weakness in your opponent's game, even if it is mental. Will you play conservative if your opponent is hurt? No, you try to bother them even more. Justine's reactions are perfectly valid as well, you need positive emotion to stay motivated.
Not purely, no. The Williams sisters return from inside the line in order to punish weak serves with powerful returns. If you're closer, you can get better angles on your returns. The intimidation is just a happy side-effect.
i wish sharapova would play with radwanska again, preetty soon. and maria wants her revenge badly, for the loss in usopen and im sure she's gonna get it!
i more respect sharapova cause she can loose, but kuznetsova has been saying something like "i loose with myself, not with agi". Loose is loose- she cant handle that, the same as Petrova.
Jim Courier is hilarious at the end where he's saying "You don't have valid point!" and his point made no sense. I think Agnieszka Radwanska is smart for stepping in and getting inside Sharapova's head. The game of tennis isn't about making friends, it's about defeating opponents.
Wow, that really is Courier's Hot Button! Hockey: Player's fight. Baseball: Yelling and screaming at the ump. Basketball: Trash talking. Football: Late hits.
I agree that it's not a very cool thing to do, but it is within the rules to stand whereever you like when returning serve. Keep in mind, if someone is standing on the service line, you should just ignore them and show them that you can't be rattled... THAT'S the best way to put them in their place.
Tracy absolutely looks marvelous. She looked younger than she was in 1990. Botox if you ask me. fI love TA's tennis, though. The only one who could match Chris Evert blow for blow from the baseline - and winning, well at least for a while.
fuck you jim courier. so what if she was a couple feet behind the service line. if sharapova cant deal with it thats her problem. dont talk about respect and what is "professional" because you know nothin about it. i completely agree with tracy austin on this.
how about Sharapova receiving coaching and her gamesmanship? Radwanska did nothing wrong here. All she did was employ strategy by stepping in on Maria's feeble 2nd serve and Maria got intimidated. Simple as that.
i agree with tracy austin...ppl don't care any more...it's not about being nice...it's about doing what u need to do to win...and jim courier seriously needs to go away
i totally agree with you. this argument was pointless. Radwanska did nothing wrong. She did what she had to do to win. It was strategy. Its not poor sportsmanship.
No-one knew about Agnieszka Radwanska? Well, certainly not if you don't follow tennis, cretin. Radwanska was a top junior player and had already beaten top players in several tournaments.
Jim sounded very adolescent when he said "You'll never see Roger Federer doing that." He does not seem to be above making personal attacks, either. Brad Gilbert annoys me the most, though. His Wimbledon commentary this year was infuriating.
Courier was my childhood idol, but now I'm 25 y/o and I think he's really opinionated and a bit of an ass!...Anybody else ever seen his arguments w/ Marv Albert at the French Open several years back?
This is why Maria owns this bitch from that day on.

i agree with tracy austin...ppl don't care any more...it's not about being nice...it's about doing what u need to do to win...and jim courier seriously needs to go away

Tracy is so in the right here - does jim not think that Sharapova's selective grunting is also disrespectful of the opponent?

but everyone grunts. it lets u use ur power better

i totally agree with you. this argument was pointless.

This argument was pretty interesting. Courier was right in my opinion, even though he acted a bit childish.

I have to agree with you.

Jim sounded very adolescent when he said "You'll never see Roger Federer doing that." He does not seem to be above making personal attacks, either. Brad Gilbert annoys me the most, though. His Wimbledon commentary this year was infuriating.

I don't usually take Courier's side but in this case he's right.

Courier was my childhood idol, but now I'm 25 y/o and I think he's really opinionated and a bit of an ass!...Anybody else ever seen his arguments w/ Marv Albert at the French Open several years back?
