This movie is atrocious! It portrays American professors as jealous, racist egomaniacs and the foreign Chinese student as an innocent, loving, nonmisogynist, brilliant sweetie pie who cracked under understandable pressure. But that is not what happened! Gang Lu's dissertation was boring. His classmate's dissertation was more interesting and noteworthy. Lu was the mediocre, jealous egomaniac! Shame to Sundance for producing this ridiculous film.

@matterh1 If you refer to the character's theory in the film, and roughly 90% of the mass of the universe is thought to be contained in "dark matter," the composition and state of which are unknown, then no. The real scientist's name was Gang Lu. His dissertation was titled Study of the "Critical Ionization Velocity" Effect by Particle-in-Cell Stimulation. Since I am no cosmologist or astrophysicist, I wouldn't know how his actual dissertation would have been relative to dark matter in general.

I am recommending this film to friends who have seen Academic Politics in action.

It is a great subject for a film about some of the threatened professors in various institutions. I have seen this kind of thing in other venues, too. I suppose that is why so many mediocre folks win. It is too bad that ability to play the game is more important than talent.

if the system remains the same, no movie can change anything. The current system gives faculty advisor almost God like power, if he decided to abuse his students, steal their ideas or simply delay graduation indefinitely, there is almost nothing the student or anybody else can do beside giving up his 5-6 years of hard work and leave.

I agree 100% eatfastnoodle. In the 5+ years I've spent trying to earn my Master's I've hit roadblock after roadblock. There exists almost no oversight or influence the student can exert on the Master's or Doctoral process. There is one student in my program who I think is one of the most promising and intelligent grad students I've ever met, but he's quit due to stress and frustration.

and it's not just the faculty advisor, anybody on your graduate committee can potentially torpedo your graduation. I know a guy who has the support of his advisor, chair of the department. several big shot professors and even the head of grad school, yet still ran into serious problems from one single professor who didn't even have tenure, all because of some stupid internal politics between his advisor and that guy, yes, by acting so intransigently, that professor was digging his own grave cuz

intentionally torturing a student who had had everything ready except his signature would reflect very badly on himself, not to mention the almost sure to come retaliation from the student's advisor, but fact of matter remains: the system ensures that not even the president of the university can do anything if a member of your committee refuses to greenlight your dissertation, he could basically come up any excuse to prevent you from getting your degree. It's total insanity.
