Legend? He wrote some good songs- and made LOTS of money for HIMSELF. He then made a mess of his life by abusing drugs, alcohol and just about anything else you care to mention. He didn't make that much money, actually. The contracts that the Manchester contingent signed into were worse than the Mainman contracts that Bowie and the like signed into in the 70's. Ryder made other people a lot of money and were repaid in kind by way of travel and possessions but didn't make much in terms of real cash.

Prohibition robbed him of what cash he did make. Lost of prescription addicts out there that don't suffer as street addicts do.
