Served aboard the JFK from 82-84 with VF-31, making an IO cruise transiting the Suez Canal and a Med cruise along with reftrays and workups. I recall our Skipper was Captain Cargill.
The JFK was OK as far as berthing quarters and facilities for a conventional carrier. Unfortunately it fell out of favor in competition with CVN's that don't need to burn oil.
this ship might come to stay in portland, maine! if not, its going to be scrapped.. the city is debating over whether to welcome it or not because it will take up a lot of room in the harbor and may be an "eye sore". However, they are saying that the ship can be made into a museum and attract tourists and create jobs. Lets all hope it goes to portland!
@SouthPortlandKK Sorry to disappoint but all indications are that it is moving to Rhode Island. Virtually ever former CO and all of the Kennedy's have endorsed the plan.
i was on her 95-99 in ireland met a lass in dunlaoghaire a pup traders warff up the st where we went ashore i married her in 2001 and she has been a u.s. citizen for 9 years now we have a 7year old girl shannon and have been back to see her family 3xs since july 4 1996o yea ireland was good to me thanks big john sweepers sweepers man them brooms
the JFK came to dublin ireland in the 90's amazing ship!! the crew were like celebrities in dublin. tkts to get on board and veiw the ship were like gold dust!!
this ship was my home for nearly 2 years, airwing from 87-91, one 6 month med deployment, several training cruises, and of course desert shield/storm. please turn this grand old vessel into a musuem so I can go walk those steel decks one last time.
They guy that is yelling instructions at 1:32 is a fuckin' prick!! I worked for that guy for two months and I wanted to off him every single morning! He's one of the guys that went from Enlisted to Officer so he assumed he knew EVERYTHING about ANYTHING! Pole smoker! He was a fuely (ABF) and knew nothing about his rate: imgaine that. I served on her from Feb. '04 to July '07 (after decom). I made the final cruise and the final port calls. I will, suprisingly, miss her too...kind of.
I served 87-90 as a BT in Mainspace 3 then transferred over to BM. I will miss the Flight Deck Smokers!!! Up against the bulkhead :) I didn't think I'd say it either but I will miss Big John.
I was VS-22s Corpsman TAD to the Medical Dept during the 82 Med/Indian Ocean Cruise. Our homecoming transit of the Suez Canal was the very day that Israel invaded Lebanon, and we ended up cruising off that coast for what seemed like a month (most likely just a couple of weeks). Watching this and other videos brought tears to my eyes
I was on the kennedy from 1987-1991 during the first gulf war..like any command, there were good and bad times. but it was the friends along the way that made it a great time and great memories
The command was crap, the ship was falling apart, and it was a money pit. $300 million was put into it in '03 and then she was scheduled for an exteneded dry dock period in '05 in which another $400 million was to be spent on replacing all the catupults plus other things (including fixing holes in the bottom!) that put the price tag way to high to even consider keeping the thing around. Most people, myself included, hated this ship because the people we worked for were self- righteous assholes!

I served on her the last days of the gulf, and floated her up to Philly. To the Navy gave up on her.

I was serving onboard back then. I got to see 8 months of Philly before I got out. I liked it up there.
