This is terrible - as well as the obvious loss of lives, imagine all the work that had gone on to get that far. It must have taken months and millions of (their currency)
The guy filming this was employed by OSHA. This crane was not supposed to be operated in winds greater than 15 mph...the wind was estimated at 32 mph. Two operators actually refused to do the pick because of the wind, they were sent home and two others replaced them.
your description contains a double a negative which makes it nonsensical.
And yes, I saw this on TV and several people died, and while they likely did face fines, OSHA doesn't always apply to situations like this. If the men had the proper safety equipment on and such and it was simply an operator's error they may not have violated any OSHA rules.
@Miguellovesvictoria 3 people died, if you look at :10 there is little box that is lifted in the distance, there were 3 people in that box like figure.
When you look at the other Crane you can see a box on the Hook.2 man in this box where pulled to the Ground from the other falling Crane. Both where Killed instantly.
Just wanted to ask to anyone that might know, How strict are Occupational Health & Safe Laws are in the States. And What if any, was the outcome from an incident report regarding this event. Just want to know because here in Australia on site, there totally On Safety safety safety....

Pause this vid at 20 seconds. Locate the black dot between the "V" of the falling crane that appears to be suspended from another crane in the background. Then realize that that is a manlift carrying 3 human beings. Watch as the falling crane strikes the manlift and pulls the the other crane down from it. Three deaths, 1 year of work that had to be redone, and lotsa money.

i can tell you what happened... i was a stupid f*cking design... way too weak and movement of the structure it was lifting was enough to pull it in the wrong direction :) die crane die will teach ppl lessons about metal when it fails :)
No, the loud booms were the operator of the crane trying to corect the angle of his tracks.. Osha had stoped work for the day.. 3 men died a few others were hurt. Had osha not stoped work due to high wind speeds, over 40 men would have been underneath when it collapsed..
I think you could use this as a example of the economic system now just before the cranes got pushed over by a puff of wind. Are we ready for the crash?
I was a half mile away. I couldn't see the collapse but heard it! I looked at the guy I was working with and said that the crane collapsed. We noticed they were doing a lift that morning on our way to our job site. I will never forget the aweful sound I heard that day.
what people seem to forget is that three men lost their lives that day (one of them being my cousin) the winds were very high that day and they should not have made that pick. but they were in a rush to get that stadium built
@cjdrummer28 Very tragic you lost your cousin in this accident,it should have never have happened ,every training i have ever went to they show this video,Peace be with you and your family.
This was in Milwaukee, WI...our new baseball stadium (Miller Park). I was driving down the highway and told my partner..."What the hell are they doing lifting shit in these winds?", and it collapsed like 15 mins later. I still have the original newspaper from that day. Awful tragedy.
That doesn't look like a wind load issue to me - eitherway, they shouldn't have been doing a lift like that in any sort of windy conditions - not with a load like that one. I can't see much in the way of stabilisers. I'd guess at really bad site and lift management and bloody poor rig set up. Could have been a ground shift, too. For a heavy lift, the crane should have been on a spreader mat or a piled bed. Impressive video, mind you.
On the far left you can see the crane carrying the 3 soon to be deceased iron workers...Jeff Wischer, William DeGrave, and Jerome Starr. They had a birdseye view of the crane coming towards them. The top of Big Blue hits their crane sending the 3 men plummeting 200 feet to their deaths. RIP

one time i was with my dad n we had the jib fully extened n we picked up a light load crane can do it no problem we were doing the lifts all day n than when we had it up the wind picked up n the boom bent sideways so far we thought it was gonna snap unbeleivable how much it flexed n luckly my dad saftley brought it on the rooftop
God Bless everyone who has lost a loved one during this tragic accident. R.I.P. Uncle Jeff we ALL MISS YOU. I can't believe it will be 11 years next month. LOVE MEG
if i remember right from reports the wind was accounted for the crane not the load which was only 450 tons out of its 1,500 ton capacity, the original operators refused to do it and they brought in some new guys. im actually a connector and can say it only takes a little wind with the bigger loads i've had some close calls cause of the wind
@jstemp12 my bad i just said what i remembered readin. when i read it again i kinda misunderstand the way i typed i thought the load was 450 tons with the crains 1500 ton capacity thxs for the info now i know that it was 450 under the limit
poor guys in the bucket, see them get thrown and whipped, had their safe lines on, 3 of them waiting for the lowering of Big Blue, the wind took it down...also at 15 seconds you can see the operator bolt from the cab, smart guy when you see kingpin burst up between your legs.
The crane fell due to a constant 45 MPH wind that day. The original Crane Operator walk off the job because his boss told him to make the lift, and he refused due to the wind. The person filming was an OSHA Field Supervisor.
yes and unfortunately 3 men lost their lives if you look in the back ground you can see the red crane that big blue falls onto and the box that lil red is hoisting had three people in it. its evil to say but you can basically watch them die and its the most horrible thing to watch. gives you the feeling that your hopeless and you knew that they were in there and ya couldn't do a damn thing about it. HORRIBLE
when he lowers the camera saying "what the hellis wrong here" look almost in the middle of the page ( stop it at :10) and look in the back ground you will see another crane in the background hoisting a box there were three people in that box
Cranes r dynamic machines and should always use caution when working with or around them as the only way 2 prevent any thing going wrong is perfect plaining e.g cut once and measure twice check and double check and from what i know about this accident the main contractor did not take into account the wind speed and change of direction which started a chain reaction and 3 men loss their lives as the predominate cause of crane accidents is human error saftey first and may they rest in peace n.z
Thats what happens when an operators ego gets in the way. The day before the operator refused to make that pick because of the wind. The next day a new operator is in the seat and says he can make the pick regardless of the wind.....he took 3 iron workers lifes that day
i saw taht yesterday on a show and it killed 3 ppl that were in the little basket thing at the far end if u can see it is just like a little rectangle from the video but yah 3 ppl were in it and died its just sad that y im not gonna be a construction worker...
i dont know if anyone knows this but 3 men "union ironworkers" were in a bucket dangling off the adjacent crane ready to secure that structure in the air and if you look carefully you can see there bucket get hit and come crashing to the ground
most fault if not all must lie with the crane operator.he is in charge of his crane its up to him to know the limits of the crane and the wind conditions it is safe to use it in.
This is terrible - as well as the obvious loss of lives, imagine all the work that had gone on to get that far. It must have taken months and millions of (their currency)

yes and unfortunately 3 men lost their lives if you look in the back ground you can see the red crane that big blue falls onto and the box that lil red is hoisting had three people in it. its evil to say but you can basically watch them die and its the most horrible thing to watch. gives you the feeling that your hopeless and you knew that they were in there and ya couldn't do a damn thing about it. HORRIBLE

AshitakaNakagawa 3 years ago
when he lowers the camera saying "what the hellis wrong here" look almost in the middle of the page ( stop it at :10) and look in the back ground you will see another crane in the background hoisting a box there were three people in that box
justin0185 3 years ago

Cranes r dynamic machines and should always use caution when working with or around them as the only way 2 prevent any thing going wrong is perfect plaining e.g cut once and measure twice check and double check and from what i know about this accident the main contractor did not take into account the wind speed and change of direction which started a chain reaction and 3 men loss their lives as the predominate cause of crane accidents is human error saftey first and may they rest in peace n.z

Thats what happens when an operators ego gets in the way. The day before the operator refused to make that pick because of the wind. The next day a new operator is in the seat and says he can make the pick regardless of the wind.....he took 3 iron workers lifes that day

did the slew ring fail??? where were the three blokes that died? in a man box?
berginnigreb 3 years ago
the bolt that connects the tracks to the rotating body sheared off sending it through the floor of the cab right between the operators legs.

payday182 3 years ago
Not faulty ass crane, faulty ass operators. Wind speed was 30MPH, crane is rated at no more than 10MPH...

crane operators get 100000 a year for a reason. its not easy to control and keep stable such massive loads. that sucks, i hope no one suffered.RIP.

xlucas15xx 4 years ago
i dont know if anyone knows this but 3 men "union ironworkers" were in a bucket dangling off the adjacent crane ready to secure that structure in the air and if you look carefully you can see there bucket get hit and come crashing to the ground
dopey20832 4 years ago
most fault if not all must lie with the crane operator.he is in charge of his crane its up to him to know the limits of the crane and the wind conditions it is safe to use it in.
