@kaunasprince I know Trane played it as a ballad but nowadays it's usually played as a medium swing tune if you were to call the tune at a jam session. Joe Henderson's recording on his Tetragon album is a good example of the typical modern jazz treatment of Invitation.
@litlewing -i feel you,,, but i didnt write the list... its online... and the first 16 are listed as follows: 1. Louis Armstrong 2. Miles Davis 3. Dizzy Gillespie 4. Clifford Brown 5. Lee Morgan 6. Roy Eldridge 7. Freddie Hubbard 8. Donald Byrd 9. Bix Biederbecke
wonderful feel - great playher - enjoyed listening to this and Chris Botti is a good musician too, just a totally different style going on.... both of great value to their audience.
love their upbeat sound! found another band like this with vocals. retro cocktail culture cool. ck them out. search cinnamon doll jazz you will dig them.
@ledzeppelinrulesya You do realize that Chris Botti regularly beat out Scott Wendholt for the jazz chair in the big bands and the top combos when they were at Indiana Univ. right? Yeah, the Scott Wendholt that is one of the most active jazz cats in NYC. Your ignorance is astounding. Roy is friggin' great, but so is Chris Botti. Relax.
That's not a "beat up trumpet". It's a high end brand called Inderbinen. They make some wild instruments costing $5-10K. However, yes, RH could probably make just about any beat up trumpet sound great.

Roy is definitely a bad dude, although he is by no means a "jazz master".

@abzs2k I'm positive what you are hearing is Pickins tendency to use syncopated improvisation not being off rhythm. though it is understandable that you may perceive that to be off rhythm. Pickens has always felt it natural to use that technique in many of his improv solos! Some people aren't used to hearing it so it sounds off but if you play this style of jazz often it is quite common!
I go to Northern Illinois University and study with Willie Pickens. He is a genius and a true musician. I hope people go check him out beyond this video cuz he's the top Chicago cat and he's killing. Nicest dude you'll ever meet.
@TheSuperthump could be, lot's of drummers do it so that it rings our more, often get chains for necklaces and stuff, another technique is to drill holes in the cymbal and attach some loose screws that rattle around.
@abzs2k I dont think it was unintentional, even if it was, his rhythm swings all the time man, all the time, its logic is asolutely clear to me. Are you kidding me? The piano player "struggles"? He is using the same device Herbie uses all the time where he sort of delays time a second before recovering both time and key. And Herbie ain't strugglin', dude.
