  • its amazing how george lucas thinks of these things so early on in star wars history! I mean this is 1980 and yet mark hamill just recited the storyline for the prequel trilogy! cool!

  • Never knew the prequels were already being planned way back then.. always thought George Lucas woke up one day in the mid-90s and decided to do prequels on a whim..

  • I bet the prequels would have been decent if they started coming out right after Return of the Jedi, say around 1985-86. I know a lot of people like CGI but to me the over use of CGI along with the casting of Anikin Skywalker are what ruined the prequels.

  • Notice children born after 1990...At 1:05 Mark says COMPLETE STORY.

Not no Phantom Menace, No Clone Attack, No Sith vengence going on...

  • @PumaSweat He is referring to the three-story arc of Luke / Han / Leia, a Harrison later in the same segment discusses the second story trilogy dealing with young Ben Kenobi & Darth Vader which they of course would not be participating in - the three films that began with THE PHANTOM MENACE.

  • @robatsea2009 Yeah I know, I'm not retarded i'm saying episode 1 2 3 sucked bootie nuggets.

  • Harrison's face when he smiles look like chapatis aka Indian flatbread (popular indian cuisine)

  • At 1:24 I had no idea they were planning on doing the prequels way back then! Thumbs up if u didnt know too

  • @tmzissupergay me to i thought Lucas was talking out of his ass but all that time he still made shit prequels thats sad

  • @chuk19100 They werent all bad. some were

  • I love how they just look at each other in disbelief at Jane's stupid first question :)

  • Jar Jar Binks was here three times.

    ;)

  • its amazing how they knew about the prequels back in 1980.. if only they knew how much the prequels sucked, and could've told Lucas to pull up his socks in 1999

  • She's hot....

  • Comment removed

  • "...show you as much of the movie that we can get away with without charging you $5"..ah the good ole days lol!

  • When are they gonna make that prequel?

  • @steveissteveable They did. /:[ Where the fuck have you been?

  • @tmzissupergay haha I know man I was kidding around because the prequels were kinda...well...kinda...not so good.

  • "The third one... which we haven't made yet..."

MY GOD. That's mindblowing to think about nowadays...

  • Was this before or after his accident?

  • @ipodvidoe after... a lot of people think the accident was between star wars and esb but it was a actually during the very last scenes of star wars..... lucas has to use a double for the speeder scenes

  • she said $5.. I feel old hearing that.

  • HAN STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT FIRST!

  • Mark Hamill is so right about Lucas making the prequel. It took Lucas a decade later to make it. The sad thing is that the prequels sucked and Lucas sucked as a director of the prequels.

  • 1:52 "So this is it for u guys"...... no just Mark

  • @mateozeppelin i dont know if you realize this or not but he's actually since become an even bigger nerd icon in the comic and video game world.

  • OMG young Jane Pauley? lol

  • jane pauley was hot back then//

  • I think the interviewer hadn't seen the first movie...

  • mark hamill looks like zac efron here

  • WOW WHEN DID THE TODAY SHOW START ?

  • @SuperWhatwhat2 It has been on since 1952

  • @SuperWhatwhat2

    A long time ago......

  • Holy crap! I never knew that they had the prequel trilogy planned all the way back then!

  • ...and the rebels of long long ago...

    Good preparation

  • What a stupid interviewer.

  • 20 years earlier 20 years later. Good call, Mark.

  • Prequel guess! Good job.

  • I'm sorry, but how adorable was Jane Pauley?

  • Jane was hot!!!

  • You can never beat the original trilogy , nor the actors :( , hopefully they go ahead and make episode 7-9 with the original cast as planed ^^

  • @LonewolfyXD Not really. I remember hearing about the prequels in 83

  • forshadowing of the star wars prequel trilogy very very scary O.o

  • Damn, so even before Lucas started shooting the Return of The Jedi he already planed on doing 3 prequels one day. Incredible.

  • This journalist is fucking stupid. They told her three times this was the second movie in a trilogy and she asked them three times in which order the movies were and if this was the last one. Pay attention to the people you're interviewing for Christ's sake

  • LOL that awkward pause at the start is hilarious!

  • I love how serious this whole interview is, with the giant picture and the 60 Minutes style questioning. lol

  • Why didn't they show the clip? I can't wait till it comes out its supposed to be awesome!!!!!

  • geeeeeezzzzzzzzzz.... would have been nice if the interviewer actually took the time to find out how many films had been released before esb...

  • Jane Pauley -YUMMY WOW!!

  • strange how theyre talkin about the prequel films that werent made until many years later :P...

  • I think Harrison ford was was sleeping at the beggining lol

  • Markkkk Hamill. ;) ohhhmyGod his smile at the beginning<3333333

  • "There will be a new story set 20 years before telling the story of Vader"

little did they know they would regret wanting that story told

  • Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford= Awesome!!!!

  • OH. MY. GOD. I have not seen this clip since it originally aired in 1980. I recorded the audio of it by holding up a microphone for my little cassette recorder, and I played this over and over again, so I remember, even now, the conversation. THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is just mind-blowing...where on earth did you get this?

  • @SchoolofSoul Transferred from an antique VHS that someone recorded of the broadcast

  • im darth vader and im gonna wage some star wars onya!

  • wow this interviewer is whack

  • Is this the earliest time where we hear about a prequel trilogy? (that eventually started in 1999). I bet people were on the edge of their seats hearing about prequels back then.

  • he gave the 1 2 3 movies in the 1080

    s

  • he gave the 1 2 3 movies in the 1089s

  • Wow they were talking about the prequels even back then.

  • The stupid bitch knows nothing about Star Wars. Ugh.

  • I wanted to see the clip.

  • How did Harrison Ford do this interview when he was still frozen in carbonite?

  • @leafyutube hahaha

  • @leafyutube this was before the filming of the empire strikes back

  • @leafyutube hahahaha I love you! xd

  • @leafyutube clone

  • @leafyutube Jabba unfroze him because NBC was willing to pay for an interview.

  • @leafyutube Well, this is a prequel, isn't it?

  • mark hammil remunds me of shawn asten

  • Ohhhh. So George Lucas planned to fuck his originals up with the prequels from early on. Got it.

  • @legend9324 YEP...pretty much....he was gang raping some of us before we were even born...thanks Lucas...

  • it's funny that this women thinks that han and luke are called Mark and Harrison...

  • Damn, the plot of the prequels come out 20 years before hand.

  • 1:20 Ford is all 'yer not supposed to say that, what did he just do?'

  • Luke Skywalker was my first crush.

  • I love that Ford cannot stand Jane Pauly in this interview.

"Yeah, it gets really confusing..." and looks away with disgust. I couldn't agree more.

Then Boy Scout Mark steps in with a face saver, lol.

  • that interviewer is so damn attractive

  • I can't watch the movies ever again knowing that Harrison obviously dislikes them.

  • OH SHIT SHE CAN SEE THE FUTURE. T ELL US THE SECRET OF LIFE.. PLEAS. LMAO HAHAHAH

  • Wow so there was a prophecy of the abomination known as the prequels before Empire came out. Thats scary.

  • 2:08 She forgot CHEWIE. RARRRRRRRRRR

  • @toddy47b And STILL Chewie gets no medal.

  • @toddy47b Actors don't tear someone's limbs out of their sockets when they are not mentioned. But Wookies are known to do that.

  • "Darth Vader is waging some star wars." wtf is this Jane Pauley. :l

  • @0:59 people watching went OMG a third movie is coming! And Lucas got pissed becasue Mark let the secret out.

  • @nholt That was never a surprise. During the substantial coverage devoted to "Star Wars" when it was breaking box office records in 1977 George Lucas and Gary Kurtz both frequently admitted that the storyline was to be comprised of six to nine parts. No secret was let out; it was old news already by the end of summer 1977.

  • @robatsea2009

I wish it was nine parts, that would have been cool.

  • @robatsea2009 lucas shared information about all 6 films in the rolling stone magazine.

  • The prequel comments are interesting. But I have to say, Jane Pauley appears completely incompetent at interviewing in those days.

  • haha, clearly the interviewer knows nothing about Star Wars

  • Lol awkward pause

  • What clip of Lando did they plan to show? The arrival at Bespin? That seems to be the only real one that wouldn't give away too much. Other than that is in their room, but Chewie is fixing Threepio so, again, spoiler there.

  • Jane Pauley - not a Star Wars fan. She sounds like Martha Stewart on crack. Worse yet ,Harrison Ford dominates & intimidates the entire interview. Hey Jane, have you driven a Ford lately?

  • @olddocVenkman I think you mean ridden.

  • jeses christ, $5. Funny to think if star wars came out today wed be seeing STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE ADVENTURE IN IMAX 3D for what is it now? 100 bucks or so? :P

  • I can't wait till next week!!!! O yea...that was thirty years ago....

  • Who is this luke guy.? all i now is the joker!! buhahahahahahaahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jane Paully was terrible here

  • This is exactly how I feel when I am trying to explain Star Wars to most girls...

  • Man, Jane was a little hottie back in the day...

  • You can *feel* the sexism in the air.

Harrison Ford's thoughts: "Who let this broad into show business?"

  • I knew Harrison as Indiana Jones :3 but then I got into Star Wars...I see him more as Han Solo. I read from one of the comments that Harrison prefered being known as 'Indy' instead of 'Han'.

    BUT DUDEEEEEEEEEEEE

    I WISH I WAS IN THE 1980'S!

MARK IS ADO-I-BLEEEE. also, 5 bucks for a movie. classic.

  • @iPeace460 I wish the admission prices were the same today, but it's relative to the cost of the films (and the cost of living themselves). The first movie cost $10 million to make in 1977, the second was closer to $20 million in 1980 and the third was around $32 million in 1983....those would be considered fairly low budget by today's standards where movies cost more than $100 million to make. As a kid I went to the first movie and the youth matinee price was $1.50!

  • @robatsea2009 "As a kid I went to the first movie and the youth matinee price was $1.50!"

yes, I meant to go SEE a movie. I know to make it was about a million.

  • @robatsea2009 Yes i remember $2.50 Tuesdays.

  • @SapphireBeth Well i used to get in free because i used to woek in a theater. :)-

  • Comment removed

  • @SapphireBeth Well i don't go to movies anymore, renting movies is more economical.

  • Comment removed

  • @SapphireBeth Their movies suck, and are scatched to shit.

  • Comment removed

  • @SapphireBeth So whats your point?

  • Comment removed

  • @SapphireBeth Who cares if you have a big video library. You can't take it with you when you die. Renting is better because you don't have a house full of movies that you barely watch. It sounds to me like you have some sort of hoarding problem. You need to let go of this stuff before its too late and your house is unlivable.

  • @blarson12

Sorry to offend you, can we just delete our comments, because it's getting annoying

And no I don't, I'm actually getting rid of a bunch of my stuff

  • @SapphireBeth Non taken and may the force be with you, bye.

  • @robatsea2009 you have to account for inflation, you could carry a million dollars a long way back then, these days in any major city in north America, a 3 bedroom house can easily go for 500,000, that same house in the early 90's went for 80,000. inflation raises the costs of everything but by doing so lowering the dollar value. 10 million could easily be equivalent to 80 million in today standards. add all the computer animation costs, need to hire more people to make movies.

  • @iPeace460 Indy and Han are not that different really. I guess Indy is less of a "scoundrel"

  • @iPeace460 Thats pretty sad because it was StarWars that made him a star. Raider's came after StarWars. Actors heads tend to get bloated once they reach stardom and tend to forget what got them there in the first place. Harrison Ford was the only one to star in many more great films. Mark Hamil's Corvette Summer? Totally bombed. Carrie Fisher? No really great films except StarWars. But they all pissed on StarWars as soon as they became famous.

  • @blarson12 I defanitely agree. But Mark Hamill DID come out pretty popular, though. He was the Joker in the animated Batman series in 1992. Although...he was a voice over, which doesn't do well either..

and tbh I have no idea what Carrie Fisher is up to. Last time I saw her was in a skin commercial.

  • @iPeace460 Carrie Fisher? Well after spending many years in a mental hostpital for drug addiction and depression. She is now doing Jenny Craig commercials because she gained a ton of wieght in the loony bin from all the pills she's bin taking. The only one worse off than her is Mark Hamill.

  • funny, I didn't think the word "prequel" was around that long ago

  • Jane looks lovely in her skirt cross legged ! Regards.

  • It's funny how people are so against Lucas and saying he was constantly shifting his ideas for how to go about the Star Wars films, and yet here Mark and Harrison are explaining it exactly as it happened 19 years prior.

  • That is not Harrison Ford, that´s Han Solo.

  • cccccccccoooooooooooollllllllllllllll

  • Oh my God, I love their reactions to this woman's ignorance.

  • @Sabohaque It's epic. It's funny how the ignorance you talk about has passed onto the idiots on TV today.

  • @hcvang, I agree; let's have some film action George :)

  • who died?

    0:21 hahahahahahah

  • I remember there was a lot of talk in the press at the time and rumours about a prequel trilogy and rumours of a sequel trilogy too, featuring the death of Luke skywalker and what happens to the main characters children etc...there were a lot of comic spin offs mind you that may have covered all of that but I've not seen them personally

  • @malourez comic books and graphic novels are wonderful, but I want a sequel trilogy on the big screen - I dont give a shit about paper continuations... or animated ones... I want to see Luke and Han and Leia and Chewie again, for it to become a real family saga to me... I think a sequel trilogy would be ten times better than a prequel one, because he'd have people involved with it who'd challenge him somewhat, uncle george.

  • further proof that a woman's place is in the kitchen

  • 0:22 "dude this lady is retarded."

  • wow Mark Hamill is sysick tells the excact main plot of the prequals, he knewed they whould come, Mark Hamill and Jedi Visions

  • This is hilarious. Nobody had any idea what Star Wars was really about! No wonder everyone thort George Lucas was crazy....

  • You can say she (Jane Pauley) had no idea, but at the time, NOBODY had any idea what was going on. In retrospect she looks confused, but you can say that because you've seen all the films and know what she was missing out on.

  • That's freekin' amazing that Mark Hamill already knew about the prequels (George's madness lol) since 1980!!

  • mark basically looked into the future @ 1:50 sec ;D!

  • OMG. Mark Hamill looks SO SEXY in a leather jacket. XD

  • Movies were 5 dollars. Nice! I had no idea George had already planned on the prequels way back then. Interesting. I was born in 82 so I didn't have a chance to see interviews of them when they originally came out.

  • @rbh1138 He planned to release them first, but couldn't since the technology wasn't enough advanced for the prequels back then xD

  • @warmsteel ha the technology was not there for the original trilogy

  • I haven't seen a lot of videos from when the films were made, thanks for posting!

  • and if I'd been more than 11 when this aired, I'd've SO wanted to sleep with Jane Pauley. She's like Faye Dunaway with a bit more shape.

  • Well, it’s not surprising, she is a woman after all and is probably best suited talking about hair and make-up and the latest fad diets of the time. It’s is quite clear that she could not care less about what Harrison Ford and Mark Hamil have to say and probably finds the whole thing boring anyway. In reference to Mark Hamil talking about the prequels, how do we know that Lucas and those un-godly men at ILM haven’t already got there hands on this footage and somehow doctored it? :)

  • FASCINATING! even back then even the actors were confused with all the Lucas BS. how many trilogies? how many episodes? is this episode V or what? how many will be? prequel, sequel? Lucas is a genius but also a little twisted with all these shit.

make the third trilogy goddammit! (with various directors/writers) !!!

  • Han Solo is hands down the best character in the Star Wars saga and Harrison the perfect guy to play him.

  • @JediLover101 Yes: Mark is the perfect Luke!

  • Jesus, unreal man. I love me some YouTube. & it only cost $5 2 see the movie back then? Damn.

  • typical NBC, no idea what they're talking about.

  • Is Harrison picking his nose at 1:52?

  • @perineum6 AHAHAHAHA

  • @perineum6 dislodging a crumb of coke...

  • for godsake, Harrison - what's with you crossing your legs all the time? plus the earing....do you do drag on the sun set strip with Eddie Murphy and co?

  • Major spoiler image behind them!

  • Wow...for them to know that the other films were going to be made...and that it had to do with Vader & Obi-Wan 20+ years earlier is neat!

Jane Pauley is lost...I could also tell that!

  • @Packerscorner

I had no clue the were aware of the next trilogy that long ago. Or that they were already throwing around the term prequel.

  • Jane Pauley is cute and all, but how could anyone ever have taken her seriously as a newsperson, or even entertainment interviewer? Yikes. Kinda cool how Hamill mentions the prequels so long before they ever saw fruition- God I wish they hadn't.

  • Hamill not in prequels, do voicework he will...

  • this is 30 years old and it still makes me uncomfortable watching such disjointed conversation.

  • Harrison was kinda right, the original title was Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars

  • damn, harrison! you so sexy!
