When the plane crashed into the tower, it destroyed multiple support beams on several floors- so suddenly there is all this weight resting on half the support actually needed. Inevitably this weight gave weigh and fell onto the remaining structure which, because of this, also collapsed. Fire had very little, or even nothing to do with it.

I know personaly a few structural engineers and achitects from my time at uni.... and they all agree that the towers shouldnt have come down with a plane hit! even with calculating the flash point temp of the fuel, there is just absolutely no way!!! the builidings was brought down via 'other methods'. do some research of your own outside of youtube and youl agree theres more to the event then were told

- Charles Thornton was talking about the initial impact not causing a collapse.

- He is still a practicing structural engineer and expert witness in the field. Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers in one of (if not THE) largest engineering firms in NYC with offices in many other cities.

- It is not a comb over. He has a full head of very healthy hair. I would know, I am his daughter.

Firstt of all, I witnessed that day with my own eyes, I was there...not viewing through a mass media filter, not over and over on the net. The description says: "Charlie Thornton Structural engineer says WTC would not collapse".

At no point is this man speaking about a collapse. He's taken out of context and referring to the likelihood of a plane "knocking over" a building like a domino.Basically weather the impact alone could topple the twins.

Listen - regardless of whether a plane could take down the building (which it couldn't), the WAY in which the buildings fell is the real key here. In order for the buildings to fall the way they did, all 47 core columns would have had to fail SIMULTANEOUSLY...possible? I'll concede that just about anything is POSSIBLE. Best explanation? absolutely not. The evidence when viewed as a whole points to controlled demolition.

the size and year doesent really matter. its not cause they were 757 or 767's. the trade centers were designed like a screen. if u poke a pencil through a window screen, the other cross sections support the damage. the same is true with the mesh structure of the towers. not to mention the #7 wasent even hit by planes

One fundamental flaw in this thinking. The columns are designed to hold 13000 tons of weight vertically. A plane is 300 tons of weight applied horizontally. Get yourself a soda straw and hold it vertically on the table. Push down on the top of it and compare the amount of pressure it can withstand that way to the amount of pressure it can stand to push at it from the side. This is not rocket science folks.

By the way, I am a civil/structural engineer but I haven't got a decades of experience behind me. Is there any experienced engineers out there who would like to comment on this? A lot of questions would be answered very quickly if some qualified people debated this rather that a load of average joes who like to call each other names. No offense to anybody who isn't an engineer, I just think it should be engineers who decide what happened to the buildings, not people with a strong opinion.

I thought he was saying that the INITIAL IMPACT of a plane would be incapable of knocking the tower over? The planes did take out a lot of exterior columns on two sides of each building. If say, 30% of the exterior columns were severed & the loads were then redistributed to other parts of the building like the corners which were then heated up (not melted), would this be enough to cause the top to topple over?
