@Rman235, The C4 missile has been retired from service. You have to do *something* with them. You can't just leave them in your magazines taking up space.... Result? A good number of them have simply been taken out into a field and blown up. In this case, the "field" is on the West side of the Great Salt Lake. The video in question was put together by an observer who got to witness some of the demos something like 8 years ago.

You are right about the typical combustion of a solid propellant when the area of the burning surface is limited. C4 missile propellant had a nitroglycerin component, but it technically is not an explosive. These motors were opened on both ends, so once they were detonated all of the propellant tried to burn simultaneously which caused a conflagration (uncontrolled rapid expansion of burning gasses) the gas volume has such high pressure and velocity that it "looks" like an explosion...
