Instead of leaving the area you just hide behind the teleporter and if you do thing correctly. His tongue thing should stop right infront of you and not hurt you. You can be a level 9001 hunter or a level 61 hunter and you could do the same amount of damage. He merely used an overpowered modded repeater pistol to OHKO the boss. Shame really.
