These lyrics are not only amazingly poetic, not only fabulous with the music, but pull at your heartstrings and weaken the muscles that hold my tear ducts. The first time I heard this song was when I had just moved to Ohio, I was driving my car through a cornfield on a sunny day. The windows were all manually rolled down and the wind was whipping through my hair. The tears came down as I listened; then a man in a Corvette sped past me while holding his horn. This song makes me think.
LOVE this song and I have seen him once in concert!! He was GREAT!! Everytime I here this song, I cry!! Randy did a great job with this song!! I wish there was a music video to this song!! I know how to do it, not a concert video, but one that goes with the story!!
This is one of the best songs i have ever heard about God and it will always have a spot in my heart along with the song called "Here I Am To Worship".
why is there a huge link in the center of the screen?! it is very irritating and I think it should be taken off---I didn't want to watch bleach, I just wanted Three wooden crosses to play!!!!!!! >:(
This song is a fine example that shows that people can truly change, no matter what they have done. Never say that a person will never change. They might've done something bad, but I always believe that everybody has potential to change if they WANT to.
From what I hear, there are three who died and one who probably should have but was spared......that's how I interpret the song......it is a beautiful song however it is interpreted and reminds me to keep my eyes on Jesus. My Dad use to say, "You don't always get the chance to make things right at the end so it's good to do your best as you go through life." I didn't always live by that wise adage but it's true and very grateful for this song to remind me of that! Thanks for posting!
The farmer, teacher and preacher died but the hooker lived and changed her life and had a son who is a preacher and he is telling the story in church.
Know I know y there's only three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway.... The hooker survived!!!! Who knew! She was searching for pardon and god gave it to her!
@spotnickk The hooker was looking for her lost soul as was the priest. She found her soul and why she lived when the preacher handed her the bible, she realized she lived to bring ppl to God
@lilmisse1234 NO! you dont get it at all, the Hooker was looking for lost sould to show the a "good time". while the priest was out trying to save lost souls and the preacher gave her the bible because she was a hooker, he was trying to save her. but obviously she didnt listen.. the 3 wooden crooses represent the Farmer, Preacher, and the teacher who made it to heaven..and the hooker dont have one because she didnt make it to heaven
@95RealTalk Listen to the lyrics. The hooker may have been looking for lost souls to have a good time with, but she ended up getting saved. She turned her life around and her son became a pastor. She probably ends up the most Christian woman in the song.
Think of the parable of the two debtors that Christ tells. One is forgiven a small debt, one is forgiven a massive one. Which one will love the moneylender more? Same with God, the more He forgives the more we love Him.
@95RealTalk no you dont get it im thirteen and know the meaning of the song the preacher hands the hooker the bible as he dies and shes saved she gives up her bad ways and has a son she read the bible to her son the bible was gave to her by the preacher on the bus who whispered cant you see the promise land and the preacher who told the story at the end was the hookers son
one thing that Always has confused me...theres 5 people.
farmer, teacher, hooker, preacher and Driver...and only the hooker survived...cuz the driver persumably died too...but theres only 3 crosses...yeah...well i love the song though.
@atagirlhiya The driver of the eighteen wheeler didn't die and one of the 4 on the bus was driving, and the hooker survived. Therefore, there are only Three Wooden Crosses on the right side of the highway.
@atagirlhiya am not sure if i have this right, but the farmer, teacher and preacher died that we know, the preacher gave his bible to the hooker ( who was searching for a new life) she lived then turned her life around and had a son, he has the bible and is now a preacher. so 3 wooden crosses, there was a reason why she didn't die, like it says in the song, only heaven knows why there is 3. :)
@atagirlhiya The way I see it is that its only talking about the four people, not other riders or the drivers just the four people, since the preacher's mom was the hooker, she told him the story, and the drivers wern't that much of importance in the life leason.
This song tells us there is hope and salvation for us all. We should never judge a person by what they do or where they are in life because we never know where they have come from or what made them that way. We should pray for them and be there as an example and a friend.
@sepultura7771 what it means, is that the hookers son became a preecher, and had that blood stainede bible. Thats what he means by there are 3 crosses and not 4. thats the reason for it. becasue God had a plan for her. For her sone to tell the story to others, and become a preecher.
@sepultura7771 now they know why she ddnt die because the preacher that was preaching in the church the hooker was his mom an now we know why she ddnt die so she could have the babt y an he could spread the word of god/
Wow. This is such a powerful song....makes me cry almost every time. I am so glad that God gives second chances. That's really what this song is about. What I'm wondering is who is headed for which destination: my best guess is the hooker is on vacation, the teacher is going for "higher education" and the farmer has gone along with the preacher for some sort of missionary work, but I'm not sure. Anyone else have an opinion on who was headed where?
I think this song is very good and the message is great. I believe everyone should have a second chance. Sometimes people who are given second are able to change for the better. I know god saved me. I wasn't what you call a wild child but when I walk away alive from a car crush I knew I should start listening more. Now it's five years later since my car crush. I now work with children, help out with a food program, and sing with my choir at church.
This is something which should humble the haughty. It shows God loves everyone, yes gives many chances. But though she was a hooker, Love to her by the preacher, her taking the bible, and then having a son -whom that pimp would have made her abort- and through her (Just like Through Rahab) a preacher had come forth to shepherd the lost, and feed His sheep. Jesus' earthly lineage goes back to Rahab the hooker- they called them harlots back then.
I've listened to this song SO many times over the years I've been alive since Randy released it, but I was listening to it just last night and I FINALLY understood it. there were only three crosses because only three people died and the hooker, she lived because right before the preacher died after the crash, he helped her be saved by Jesus, so she survived. it made so much since to me after I figured it out :D
he rights such a damn good song and ya'll got the nerve to sit here and criticize him for not adding the bus driver what the fuck is wrong with you people! It says nothing about the bus driver dying anyways. its called 3 wooden crosses to show 1 person is left out. if they called it 4 wooden crosses who would have thought of the bus driver in the 1st place. The point of the song is to show everyone needs a second chance and the hooker got hers through the preacher with his last act of kindness.
i would like to know the 5 people that voted that they didn't like this song this my fav song by him and he is the only one that can go up and down as easly and singing, besides George Jones
Truly beautiful song, don't care whether people dislike country music, this song has soo much meaning on many levels, it's not just a story it's morals and values too
@BenniiLaRoux I don't like country music, but this song is too good to pass up. It IS the best country song I have heard, this song is about meanings, like you said.

this song iss as good as it gets and it makes me cryy everytime i feel randy is a good at heart writer if you agree then well you knoww.its what you leave behind you when you go.(:
This makes me think of a friend of mine, she was a musician herself, She told me when I was a very young boy "Carl, we can change the world by using words like LOVE and FREEDOM." This is that kind of song.
This song started me into Country music. It holds such a hope! After losing close friends and family, there is a reason to keep going. God loves us to much and this song adds meaning. Thanks!
after i heard this song i cried but there is so much meaning to this song but to love god everyday and pray that your hear for a reason and to love god for putting us on this earth to be created by mothers and fathers so always remeber this song as a blessing
this song is so so true don,t take the lord for granted he has a plan for each and every one of us his children praise the lord and god bless us all amen
this song makees me tear up everytime I hear it it speaks of the life changing grace of God and its power to transform the lives of people who most would consider to be the worst sinners of all. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that WHOSOEVER, believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. the free gift of eternal life is avalabe to all who wants it, ITS the ones who feel no need for it who lose out.
For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. We don't know who we may effect and what the future holds. Forgive and you shall be forgiven. Peace
this song to me means to live life to the fullist and not care what u have with you but to leave behind a memory of you for your loved ones so they will never forget you. so make good memorys while you can
5 stars/favs! Aaahh.....this beautifully powerful ballad still gives me goosebumps! ..."I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, It's what you leave behind you when you go." Thank you for posting this itachiuchiha369619!

this song can really speak to people....im gonna start saying to ..like ...everybody "its not what u take when u leave this world behind u , its what u leave behind u when u go"...thats the oart that really got me..and its one of the parts that can change someone's life...
this really can speak to alot of people im gonna start sayin to like everybody "its not what u take when u leave this world behind u its what u leave behind u when u go"...that the part that really got me...and its the part that can change peoples life
This is a great song. It really has a lot of meaning unlike most of the songs today. Great words. Everytime I hear it, it makes me want to cry. Too great for words. God bless you all. Don't forget that he loves you!
this song makes me cry because three of my friends at our high school were killed in a car accident two adults were killed too but the little girl survived.
One of my favorite songs! Truly beautiful and Randy Travis sings it perfect! My best friend shared this song with me and I appreciate it. Thank you for posting!! Amen!
one of my favorite songs. i love the message that this song has. its saying that no matter what you do or how you go you should never forget about who and what you love. am i right?
I think it's talking about how everyone deserves a chance. Most people would have seen the hooker as beyond hope, a lost soul; but she was given a second chance at life. And she ended up changing her life around.
I love this song!! There are so many different ways you can look at it; I think everyone would see a different message when listening to this.
This one of my all time favorie songs. To start with the melody is great and the storey is a soul driving make you want to cry. Who ever said christen songs can't be country. God Blessed this message
there's alot of places that if you look on the right side of the highway there is actually three wooden crosses i see them every time i goto terahoute frfom indianapolis
So, what? The bus driver isn't cool enough for a cross? WTF?! The passengers get one each, but it's just all in a day's work for the bus driver? Hm. :p
This song means alot to me. A friend of mine, his dad, littlebrother, and mom were killed when an 18 wheeler ran a stop sign. All of them were killed. Every time i hear that sont i think of them.
You guys might also find it ironic that I like this song (and others like it) because I'm also an Athiest (I don't believe in God). Please note that I'm only saying that I choose not to believe, not trying to make you believe or not. I find it very ironic because this song is about God saving the hooker's life. Please, no rude comments on my beliefs, I just thought that I would share that little fact with you.
That is ironic! I'm a Christian, but i'm not gunna critic u. thanks for making the vid cuz almost every other vid. gets the sound removed for violations....so its hard to find the actual music for the song on here! thanks :)

There are three possiblities I can think of for why the bus driver didn't get a cross:
1. He's Jewish, so his family wouldn't want a cross for his memorial.
2. He lived but wasn't mentioned in the song.
3. He doesn't exist: one of the four people mentioned was driving the bus.

this song makees me tear up everytime I hear it it speaks of the life changing grace of God and its power to transform the lives of people who most would consider to be the worst sinners of all. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that WHOSOEVER, believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. the free gift of eternal life is avalabe to all who wants it, ITS the ones who feel no need for it who lose out.

You guys might also find it ironic that I like this song (and others like it) because I'm also an Athiest (I don't believe in God). Please note that I'm only saying that I choose not to believe, not trying to make you believe or not. I find it very ironic because this song is about God saving the hooker's life. Please, no rude comments on my beliefs, I just thought that I would share that little fact with you.
itachiuchiha369619 2 years ago
That is ironic! I'm a Christian, but i'm not gunna critic u. thanks for making the vid cuz almost every other vid. gets the sound removed for violations....so its hard to find the actual music for the song on here! thanks :)
