Octopus's are up there with the smartest and most genetically superior animals in the world.. Scientist are still curios on what gives them the ability to do that.. Either way..I Want One!!!
instead of investing research into these creatures for military gear, cant we just hire them? why create an invisible tank when you can just slap a bunch of these on the outside of the tank? it would be way cheaper..
It can detect subtle color and texture patterns and changes the color of it's skin accordingly to blend in as a defense mechanism, and sometimes for hunting. Some of these things can even make themselves look like flounder or water snakes!!
If you don't believe this is real, search wikipedia for "octopus". This isn't the mimic octopus, but it's definitely real. If it weren't for their short lifespans, they'd probably be the dominant species on the planet. Their brains are much more developed than human brains in terms of their amount of body control.
no way this vid is real... you can see the octopus image fade into the coral instead of molding into the shape of the coral... some film student is trying to be clever :p
yes. I am serious haniver. a mimic octopus, when not mimicking it's surroundings, does not look like that. They do actually have a "look." They are not just always mimicking.
all species have close relatives, there's more than only one type of octopus that can change color, the mimic/wunderpus have stripes but i've seen a few that are spotted when not changing, and i found spotted ones clicking the videos on the right as you suggested ^w^
b) the octopus not only changes colors (which is understandable), but it also changes shape. watch the bottom right edges of the octopus...when it blends in suddenly there are little spikes from the coral.
=/ its not fake, their suckers intentionally pick up the textures of the ground that they are on, and since they are invertebrate they are able to produce the texture through their skin, its an octopus's natural ability. But it isn't a mimic octopus =/
This is a superb camo which inspired the new metalgear 4, which was called 'octocam'. That is the ability to adapt to the background and even mimic its texture.
Hahaha at the end the fish swims backward. Lol ;)

@WackyAnimation cause they'd try and mimic the color of the tank.. so you'd have a rolling mass of octopi the color of tanks lol

We need to get on developing that technology. You can always look to nature for the best ideas. Imagine if a ship/plane/person had that ability!

To clear this up for people who care, this "mimic octopus" is in fact real. This is coming from an Evolutionary Biology major. Check it:
Hanlon, R.T., L.A. Conroy, Forsythe J.W. 2008. Mimicry and foraging
behaviour of two tropical sand-flat octopus species off North Sulawesi,
Indonesia. Biological Journal of the Linnean Society. 93 (1): 23-38.
