Lithium is often used as a drug for bipolar people to make them less depressed and lithium depression is when people who take lithium get addicted to it and feel they can't live without it no matter how hard they try. Cause bipolar people has masive highs followed by huge depressions...lithium though stabalizes this but also makes you feel nothing. Personally I think it's about letting go of a depression ("here in the darkness I know myself", "I want to stay in love with my sorrow, but God, I want to let it go") and how hard that can be, because a depression can feel like a 'part of yourself' and in some ways people can feel really bad about being depressed but they wonder what they'll be after they let it go as well. I think the song is about that process, too.
