@kittycatcarley Agreed. I don't give a fuck whether a song is mainstream or indie. If my ears find it pleasing, that is all that matters. It's retarded and immature to disregard a song just because of where it came from.
I'm gonna back myself and say, seemingly against the view of most people, that this is my favourite version. I like the dainty electro refrain, prefer the faster tempo, and the arrangement is a bit fuller and more integrated than the Long Island EP version. Credit to Beirut for taking one song and creating two works of art - this one kinda washes over and is gone before you know it, the other is more spacious and deliberate.
i've been aware of this song for a long long time, and associated it with a sense of sadness, and randomly back in january after visiting with my grandfather in the hospital, i played it about 1 amor so, and a few moments later got a phone call saying that he was in cardiac arrest. feel really bizarre for posting this, but this song seems to have been written with a whole lotof emotion, and for one reason or another ill certainly always associate this songwithbeauty of growing older and death.
Great song , but in my insignificant opinion it would sound better with a real ''Bossa Nova drums and stuff like that , instead of a mechanic rhythm. Anyway Beirut is incredible, Michel - Brazil
was STOKED when i heard this song at the end of a Weeds show! although i have always loved them this is not my favorite version of the song, i like classic natural Beirut, this is to synthesized, not my thing....Beirut is the creator of beautiful art. I love you guys! Cant wait to see them Live!
this is my favourite version...it's just got this unique sweetness...and the accordian/brass combo just kills me. especially in contrast to the lo-fi bossa nova loop and the funny little keyboard synth thing.
i loved beirut before i started watching weeds, but when i saw´(think the last episode of season 2... or somewhere in season 3) it was just sooooo emotional ='( but so beautiful.
Celtic music? I'm English, and this sounds nowt like celtic music, lol. Look up Johnny Flynn for celtic, Beirut are more French Gallic sounding, or East European. Love both Johnny Flynn, and Beirut though :-p,
Great band and music- but I think you could have at least put in a few pictures or something rather than just three words. Whatever, we both agree on one thing- BEIRUT IS AWESOME!
@CrazyFreerunner lol indie music isnt a genre its a label most bands get called indie in genre because they are similar, no need to label its simply music:)
@GuiDiogenes "indie" simply means that theyre signed to an independant label. It has nothing to do with a specific style. Indie encompasses all styles and genres.

Andrew Bird could do an awesome acoustic cover of this song, with just his violin and loop machine, maybe some whistling... yeah... =)

There are artists like Madonna and Tokio hotel which cant sing or dance and get this MASS of attention.
And then there are bands like Beirut, which should be superfamous.
I cant believe that they are so unknown in Germany (I tested it: 1 of 6 knows, 48 persons where asked :D)

samba :)

No, no, no.
Samba correspond to another thing/ rithym.
I recomend you listen to Paulinho da Viola - a great brasilian artist, Zeca Pagodinho, Farofa Carioca, Tereza Cristina and so on.
So, you may understand the differences.
Good enjoy.

@Perlanutri I'm brasilian too, Perlanutri. And I studied music theory... I realized rythms of samba in this melody... but it's just my opinion...

Here are the lyrics for anyone who can fin em useful:
The lights go on
the lights go off
when things don't feel right
I lie down like a tired dog
licking his wounds in the shade
when I feel alive
I try to immagine a careless life
a scenic world where the sunsets are all
breathtaking
