As a player of both EQ1 and WoW, I can say that are major similarities between the two games -- which stands to reason, since WoW is a blatant clone of EQ that has attempted to make certain improvements.
The cloning aspect of it extends right down to the names of various spells, such as Moonfire and Thorns for Druids in WoW, which are directly ripped off from abilities that Druids have in EQ, for example. (continued next post)
That being said, the major difference between the games comes in the duration of the fights and the amount of time it takes to level up. Fights in WoW are very brief, but give neglible amounts of exp, so you will have to grind through hundreds of individual encounters to get one level. By contrast, battles in EQ last longer, but you can level up in as few as 25 individual encounters at lower level. (continued next post)
Overall, leveling up in EQ is faster than in WoW, and less repetitive, because you aren't obliged to wade through a sea of mobs to get to your next level. EverQuest does provide a richer depth of play than WoW. There are whole archetypes of character classes in EQ, such as the enchanter and bard, that do not exist in WoW at all.
(Enchanters are specialists at crowd control. A single enchanter can lock down a dozen mobs or more at once, preventing those mobs from moving or taking any action and effectively removing them from a fight. This is comparable to the Controller class in the MMO City of Heroes/Villains, but has no direct counterpart in WoW.
Bards are a hybrid class that can wear heavy armor and dual wield weapons, and they also have the ability to buff and debuff their companions, as well as practice crowd control techniques.) Tracking works differently in the two games, as well. In WoW, tracking can only be accomplished for a certain type of creature at any given time, and it's built into the in-game compass window, working like radar to show exactly where all the mobs of that type are in relation to you.
By contrast, in EQ, tracking is accomplished via a UI window that has a list of the names of all the mobs within tracking range. You can select one name from the list and the game will then begin to continuously feed you information about what direction you need to move in order to reach the mob you have individually selected.
The WoW method is better suited to farming mobs of a certain type in large numbers, while the EQ method is vastly superior for locating a specific mob by name (such as one needed for a quest). There are pros and cons either way.
EQ is more generous to its players in providing movement control. Abilities like snare and root last much longer and are less likely to break than their counterparts in WoW. This befits the longer duration of EQ battles, but also serves to make it easier to manage aggro from many creatures at once on a single character or a group, which is sometimes unavoidable in certain game areas.
In a similar vein, pulling a single mob from a group of its comrades is an art form unto itself in EQ, so much so that the term "pulling class" has come to be recognized as a standard class archetype, and many well-rounded groups will seek a dedicated puller for their endeavors. This is not generally the case in WoW, nor is it as readily posisble, since the hallmark of a pulling class is some means of instantly dropping aggro if one aggroes too many mobs at once.
The iconic ability used to achieve this in EQ is Feign Death, which several character classes receive, while instantly dropping aggro is more difficult to achieve in WoW. However, this is counterbalanced by the fact that it's generally not hard to pull no more than a few mobs at a time in WoW, making specialist pullers less necessary (and the level of crowd control that an enchanter provides also less important).
I haven't progressed far enough in WoW to have raided seriously, although I have in EQ. Raids in EQ demand constant situational awareness and mobility. You will often be required to move around the map in response to the changing demands of the battle, and if you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time, you may literally suffer instant death in the form of the legendary Death Touch, an ability used by raid mobs since the earliest days of EQ to increase the difficulty of encounters.
(Most modern DTs are trigger-based and provide a window of time in which they can be cured before they kill you by an appropriate healer -- provided that healer is paying attention!) Travel is generally faster in modern EQ than in WoW, thanks both to player teleportation ability and a variety of interconnected static teleporters stationed in strategic positions around the vast game world of EQ.
It will rarely take more than 5 minutes to travel to any given area of the game world, while WoW will often demand times in excess of that just to ride with a FlightMaster between towns, let alone any additional time that may be required to physically traverse the landscape once your flight has ended.
EQ has a lower population density on its servers than does WoW, so it can be hard to find a group. To compensate for this, EQ has mercenaries, which are NPCs that will travel with your character and help you fight battles in exchange for paying them a flat rate of money every 15 minutes. (The mercenaries can be disabled to save money, also.)
These mercs are extremely powerful at lower level and will help your character level quickly then, which is another way in which leveling is easier in EQ than in WoW. The final area of difference between the games lies in PvP. WoW and EQ both have dedicated game servers for pure PvP, if a player wishes that, or standard PvE. Both have optional player duels, and arenas for open PvP, at the players' discretion.
What EQ lacks, however, are level-restricted PvP areas and anything akin to the Battlegrounds in WoW. Arenas in EQ are designated places where anyone can go to PvP if they feel like it, but PvP hasn't really been designed into the spirit of EQ, and the EQ Arena is almost always empty aside from special events that occur rarely. Also, PvP class balance is extremely poor in modern EQ, since it is an admitted afterthought to PvE and languishes largely ignored.
Overall, EQ is a game that rewards the attentive player and punishes carelessness. It is very easy to die in EQ if you're cavalier about what you're doing. There is more strategic depth in EQ than in WoW, so for players who appreciate having to plan out their engagements and their characters' progression, EQ may be more appealing. WoW is greatly superior for PvP, however (although Guild Wars is by far the best for that).

Actually what started it all, if you look it up, is dungeon and dragons type games, and computer chat oriented games that made EQ what it was. Even the designers of EQ gave their thanks to MUD's, and one MUD in particular for their making of the game. Every game past that has taken all the good, trimmed off the bad, and tried to build upon what works.

Even graphics wise.. you can control every aspect of the resolution and interface.. no other game offers that..
The running is formed better.. the npcs may repeat often, but at least the game holds better latency stability.

The programming is horrible in the way that it eats computer memory unlike anything I've ever seen before, but it's still a fun game to play IMO? I like it more than WoW and I played both of them. @TommyDaGreat I only played when it was new. It was super glitchy and it didn't have the same feel as EQ did. I didn't like the mob grouping system, and I thought the housing was a little lame. I don't know how it has changed, but as far as I felt, it was kind of lame when it was new.
I have an 85 Iksar Monk. I quite because nobody wants to group once you get to max level. You either need to be in a guild or cliche to get a group going. And, don't get me started on progression. Yuck!
However, if you like to solo and explore EQ is a fantastic game. Just stay away from the stresses like progression and raiding. Hehe

There is another option introduced after May. A new server featured as "preferred" in the server list. Players start at level 51 with a few alternative points to spend.
In all honesty EQ has grown into a giant game and most people need a guiding hand to get started on that particular server.
I will agree Glooming Deep is a good place to go for learning simple mechanics and once you feel somewhat accomplished, the new server will provide a good boost.

Actually what started it all, if you look it up, is dungeon and dragons type games, and computer chat oriented games that made EQ what it was. Even the designers of EQ gave their thanks to MUD's, and one MUD in particular for their making of the game. Every game past that has taken all the good, trimmed off the bad, and tried to build upon what works.

that's because no game company besides blizzard can put out a quality mmo. I'm not saying wow is perfect by any standard, but its the farthest progressed, multi billion dollar company now. And they started from making small games for game boy.
Also.. back when wow wasn't televised, it was still the most popular mmo, and took damn near every player from any other game on the market.
Aion is a crappy game with decent graphics.

Aion is a grind game.. thus why it has under 90 rating in every gaming website survey.
WoW has an overall better system. Some may not like the interactions of players, or the class confusion balancing.. but, it has an overall better set up.
Even graphics wise.. you can control every aspect of the resolution and interface.. no other game offers that..
The running is formed better.. the npcs may repeat often, but at least the game holds better latency stability.
Many games out there..

If you are trying to persuade people to play it, then you didn't do a very good job. I still enjoy this game, although at this time, I don't play it.
EQ has the best pve of any MMO I have experienced. But I know many that disagree.
I wish Everquest 2 wasn't as big of a let down as it was. It completely ruined the everquest name.

That being said, I was an avid EQ player for years, starting right when the game came out. I still remember killing gnolls at BB and making deadly runs across the Karanas to get to High Pass Keep from Qeynos =P

The programming is horrible in the way that it eats computer memory unlike anything I've ever seen before, but it's still a fun game to play IMO? I like it more than WoW and I played both of them. One thing I really love is the housekeeping.

@TommyDaGreat I only played when it was new. It was super glitchy and it didn't have the same feel as EQ did. I didn't like the mob grouping system, and I thought the housing was a little lame. I don't know how it has changed, but as far as I felt, it was kind of lame when it was new.

I have an 85 Iksar Monk. I quite because nobody wants to group once you get to max level. You either need to be in a guild or cliche to get a group going. And, don't get me started on progression. Yuck!
However, if you like to solo and explore EQ is a fantastic game. Just stay away from the stresses like progression and raiding. Hehe

There is another option introduced after May. A new server featured as "preferred" in the server list. Players start at level 51 with a few alternative points to spend.
In all honesty EQ has grown into a giant game and most people need a guiding hand to get started on that particular server.
I will agree Glooming Deep is a good place to go for learning simple mechanics and once you feel somewhat accomplished, the new server will provide a good boost.

Yehh. I know what ya mean. Got a few 80s on WoW. Just don't normally play it anymore. Went and tried EQII also. Got a 80 wizard on there in a matter of about 2 months. Got a 80 wizard on EQ1 also.
