I hated to know that the day she died was a very special day for me. A beautiful voice and special talent, going away as I was making a special particular travel. Anyway, If it was God's will, we have to accept it :-(
It it so sad... that illness took away my mom as took away Minnie too. Hope they're in wonderful places now. Meanwhile, i'll keep my mom's best moments and Minnie's wonderful voice and music.
I cry when I see this. In Feb.2005, I found a 2 inch lump in my left breast 5 days after my 20th wedding anniversary. It was "Triple Negative" Breast cancer (non hormonal) and Minnie had the exact SAME cancer as I.It is super aggressive-3 weeks before-I KNOW nothing was there (same area-no lump!).This type of Breast cancer rarely affects caucasion women (like myself) but mainly african american women get it-CHECK YOUR BREASTS- WEEKLY! I survived this horrible disease but live in fear everyday :(
Think how long it took for this disease to be focused in by society. Probably because American society is afraid of breasts. Nudity, naked, breasts, it's all too sinful to discuss. Like AIDS it got ignored.
Minnie Riperton was the first to bring attention to breast cancer, which is why she did this commercial to make everyone aware. However when she did this commercial,it was alreadt to late. The cancer was back.I lost quite a few childhood friends to breast cancer at a young age...not even seeing 40. My aunt, who is 88 has been battling the good fight against this ravaging diseace for 8 years.Thank you so much Minnie for doing this commercial and for your Bea-U-Ti-Ful voice..no camparison ;-)

@eyesawit2 I am sorry to hear about your lose. Yea it does get better. My mother passed away 11/14/2009 and my father on 1/10/2007. I still cry too when I think about them. I wanted to go off-topic for a minute...there's an adult actress named Stephanie Swift (who's, for the most part, done lesbian work between 1995-2008) who's going through her own breast cancer battle right now. Anyone know the latest on Stephanie? There is a "get well" thread on the lez board where I post but, I refuse to read it! (People and their fake messages! "I love you" and "Get well soon!". That kind of corny shit.) I just hope she's alright. She'd be a BIG loss...like Minnie in '79. :(
The thing that is great is that she knew her situation. She never believed that she would die! She was convinced that she was going to beat it! That's why she said it saved her life. But it was more important to her to motivate victims to seek medical help.
This hits home for me because my mother just had a mastectomy and is going through chemotherapy right now. They can do so much more now. Minnie looked so healthy. I know she passed weeks after this video. What happened? Did the cancer come back? Did they not get it all? That's what scares me about my mom.
As a kid hearing that song haunted me because it would somehow dictate my life. being muslim,I knew it was wisdom not random that cancer research would be the nucleus of my career and now am finishing a phd in biosatistics because minnie riperton who had died 5 years prior to my birth.everytime a subject or topic would bore i'd think of minnie and those poor little kids at st. jude's crc.
by almighty god it works and feels like a drink of cold water on dog day july.
I was watching the Unsung episode about Minnie Riperton and I remembered that Ms. Riperton passed away in the summer time becuase I was going to the beach and waiting for my Aunt to pick me up when I heard on the radio she passed away. Just recently I was looking at a story about her life and it gave the month as July when she left us. Before there was Mariah Carey there was the very beautiful and angelic voice of Ms.Rieperton. Her daughter is just as talented her mother would've been honored
When folks first got the word that Minnie's cancer had returned everyone was shocked because of the surgery several years before. It seems like the news of her passingg came just as quick and it was hard on all her fans. Her new album was just taking off and she was gone. It was a very sad day, but 30 years later she is still remembered. This says a lot about her as a wonderful human being and a good person.
Yes, AmmaMama, the cancer returned even though the breast was removed. I understand that the cancer was in her lymph at the time of her diagnosis, and that means it has spread pretty significantly already.
Seeing this commercial is so sad. I am almost 28 now and i was diagnosed with breast cancer at 26. This awful disease can happen to anyone. Thank God that i am in remission now and i plan to stay that way. I only hope one day that they will find a cure for this disease.
baby sister dont ever be sad the sun is shining and im sure ur a fighter, dont ever stop fighting, i can sense postitive emotion in ur words, im so proud of you, i hope i can have ur courage under diverse circumstances
Well, she did "survive" the initial cancer scare. This commercial is from 1977, I believe, because she was first diagnosed (and had the breast removed) in 1976. By late 1978, it had returned in her arm ... and she died in July, 1979.
You are correct. Her breast was removed two years before she died. That commerical was made a lot of sense back I the day. Just as any other cancer patient, once the doctor remove a part of the body where the cancer start you hope and pray that is it. Unfortunate, it comes back sometimes. Minnie mind was in the right place to think positive about living a long life. She had a sweet spirit. When you have faith, nothing bothers you. You live until God calls you home.
The really sad thing is when she had her breast removed the cancer had already spresd. I'm sorry to say. It's weir how it gets in women at around age 30. The girl that played Steve Urkele's girlfriend also died of from it at a young age. I'm not sure but I don't thing either one of them smoked.
Michelle Thomas died of a rare stomach cancer at age 29. Life is precious and cancer as well as death cares not of status or person. God bless their souls
sad that the music cant just be enjoyed. ok, everyone k nows how and when she passed! why focus on the heavy part of life? just enjoy and live. even tho she was sick, her music was focused on love and life. maybe alot of you should try that. learn a lil something.
i couldnt have agreed with you more...it makes the music more enjoyable and no one wonts to be sad i kno im tired of sad stories when you hear music it should make you happy and inspired and thats the way she makes me feel gotta luv it RIP MINNIE!!
Wow! I remember researching Minnie in the library when I first went off to college. Usually I feel depressed when I read about people who died very young. But that day, this warm feeling completely overwhelmed me. I think that it was her spirit. She won't let you be sad for her. She lived a full life and has left us with a reservoir of great music. I shut down my research and went home smiling that day.
Could you all please give respect to Minnie and her family? Who knows they may read your comments. These videos are about Minnie's beautiful voice and her talent. She would not have appreciated or expected to have her songs and footage previewed for people to vent and use ugly language. Find another page to do this. There are people who enjoy the comments and the footage, especially if they are positive.
Thank you for posting that. I agree 10% and cannot fathom why people would come on youtube and post such disgusting and hateful comments about another human being , who suffered and lost the battle against breats cancer. Those people have no shame or compassion
The footage in the background, does anyone know what show she was performing on when she was singing? I thought I had seen all of her footages except, when she was on the Tonight's Show and announced that she had breast cancer (and was interrupted by a commercial because no one knew she would make the announcement) and I have not seen her footage from March 22, 1975 on American Bandstand. This footage may have been for the commercial, I am just curious.
God bless this gifted woman, gone too soon....I think one of her reasons for being here was to bring beautiful, hopeful music to everyone. And even though she's no longer with us, I think that even this commercial may have helped to save who knows how many women. I never knew about this commercial till now....
i agree. life is unfair sometimes. the good people like Minnie Riperton, Sam Cooke, Aaliyah, etc. have to die so young but CHARLES MANSON is still alive? it just isn't right.
but i beleive Heaven has one heck of a musical lineup!
God doesnt make mistakes she was meant to be here to give the beauty that she gave then he wanted her home we may not understand God decisions but its not for us to understand its just for us to accept, learn from, and keep being good people
What do you know about God? I bet your one of those religious nut cases, I bet you run around all day with a book that was interpreted by a killer "king james". Leave me and my beliefs alone.
hiiamrick is one of those secular leftist nut cases, running around all day with Karl Marx's book that produced so many murderers. Leave us G-d fearing people alone
Kailac, this was just how announcers talked. This man was a famous one. Until the "where's the Beef" commercial, hardly anyone used humor in a commercial. I didn't have a TV then but I'd bet that this was pretty shocking to the American public to bring up such a personal problem. It wasn't done so this was very brave.
Very true. However, there have been many advancements in the treatment of breast cancer since then...many gals are survivors...but still, looking at the big picture of things, I don't believe we are 'winning the war' against cancer.
didn't she die that same year anyway, i wonder how long after that commercial, how sad, telling the world she's cured, only to STILL lose her life. So sad :(
what do you mean laugh out loud??!! I hope someone close to you dies of breast cancer (like Minnie, My Grandmother & Great Aunt). Maybe the fucked up laughter will quiet down a bit! And yes, I have a sense of humor - when something is funny.
I can't believe you said that. No one in my family has ever died of breast cancer. My grandmother lost one of hers, but she's fine now, unlike your grandmother and great aunt. They're in heaven and tit less. Next time you think to speak ill of my loved ones, don't.
Apologies for wishing ill of your family. However, I still feel in VERY inappropriate you think the comment that person wrote was funny. There's nothing funny about it, AT ALL. The fact you were offend, annoyed, incensed or all three by what I said, proves my point. There was no "LOL" in your last statement. When you think it to be someone you care for, it ceases to be (lol) funny.
"The announcer he just says she lost her breast in such a matter-of-factly way like ah well its no big deal and then she still died. grrr!"-kailac24
The only thing that was funny about that video was the way the announcer said she lost a breast. Of course breast cancer isn't funny. No cancer is funny. I have lost family to lung cancer. go to therapy. We're cool but seriously go.
@klwewf Hey I was going through some old youtube messages and came across our convo. I was just wondering if you've gone to therapy yet. My grandma passed by the way.
A cancer diagnosis back at that time was almost always a death sentence. They have come so far in treatments now..too bad it was not Minnie's destiny to benefit from it.
But she lives on in her music and in the fans she touched as well as in her daughter Maya!
I keep reading that the cancer had spread to her lymphatic system when she announced that she had cancer on the Flip Wilson show. I wonder if at this time, she didn't know whether it had spread. Maybe so.
The kind of commercial that was made in the seventies. The advancement of medicine had not reached our world back then. Minnie had strong faith and she spoke about a painful personal illness that she was told to keep a secret. Kudos to Minnie and her brave soul.
she died a little while after. :( RIP Minnie. ♥

I just wonder if there is a history in her family of breast cancer. She seemed to eat right and exercise.

This hits home for me because my mother just had a mastectomy and is going through chemotherapy right now. They can do so much more now. Minnie looked so healthy. I know she passed weeks after this video. What happened? Did the cancer come back? Did they not get it all? That's what scares me about my mom.

Considering her career and the era, it was very selfless of her to use her celebrity and start the dialog about women and breast cancer.

This says a lot about her as a wonderful human being and a good person.

not just heartbreaking but very frightening...and cruelly ironic.

Yes, AmmaMama, the cancer returned even though the breast was removed. I understand that the cancer was in her lymph at the time of her diagnosis, and that means it has spread pretty significantly already.
mrjlg404 2 years ago
so did the cancer spread even though she removed one breast? does anyone know?
AmmaMama 2 years ago
AmmaMama
Unfortunately it did spread. They did a special on Minnie on TV One which was on last night. You know they'll repeat it again.

Seeing this commercial is so sad. I am almost 28 now and i was diagnosed with breast cancer at 26. This awful disease can happen to anyone. Thank God that i am in remission now and i plan to stay that way. I only hope one day that they will find a cure for this disease.

Well, she did "survive" the initial cancer scare. This commercial is from 1977, I believe, because she was first diagnosed (and had the breast removed) in 1976. By late 1978, it had returned in her arm ... and she died in July, 1979.
mrjlg404 2 years ago 4
You are correct. Her breast was removed two years before she died. That commerical was made a lot of sense back I the day. Just as any other cancer patient, once the doctor remove a part of the body where the cancer start you hope and pray that is it. Unfortunate, it comes back sometimes. Minnie mind was in the right place to think positive about living a long life. She had a sweet spirit. When you have faith, nothing bothers you. You live until God calls you home.
MsTaurus12 2 years ago 3
The really sad thing is when she had her breast removed the cancer had already spresd. I'm sorry to say. It's weir how it gets in women at around age 30. The girl that played Steve Urkele's girlfriend also died of from it at a young age. I'm not sure but I don't thing either one of them smoked.

If the timeline is correct, she died about 2 years after this.

Could you all please give respect to Minnie and her family? Who knows they may read your comments. These videos are about Minnie's beautiful voice and her talent. She would not have appreciated or expected to have her songs and footage previewed for people to vent and use ugly language. Find another page to do this. There are people who enjoy the comments and the footage, especially if they are positive.
mmemmorry 3 years ago 7
Thank you for posting that. I agree 10% and cannot fathom why people would come on youtube and post such disgusting and hateful comments about another human being , who suffered and lost the battle against breats cancer. Those people have no shame or compassion

The footage in the background, does anyone know what show she was performing on when she was singing? I thought I had seen all of her footages except, when she was on the Tonight's Show and announced that she had breast cancer (and was interrupted by a commercial because no one knew she would make the announcement) and I have not seen her footage from March 22, 1975 on American Bandstand. This footage may have been for the commercial, I am just curious.
mmemmorry 3 years ago
God bless this gifted woman, gone too soon....I think one of her reasons for being here was to bring beautiful, hopeful music to everyone. And even though she's no longer with us, I think that even this commercial may have helped to save who knows how many women. I never knew about this commercial till now....

God doesn't make mistakes. Hypothetically speaking, "while walking through his garden he decided on which flowers he will pick and keep next to him."

Songsmirth 3 years ago 2
The announcer he just says she lost her breast in such a matter-of-factly way like ah well its no big deal and then she still died. grrr!
kailac24 3 years ago 3
Very true. However, there have been many advancements in the treatment of breast cancer since then...many gals are survivors...but still, looking at the big picture of things, I don't believe we are 'winning the war' against cancer.

what do you mean laugh out loud??!! I hope someone close to you dies of breast cancer (like Minnie, My Grandmother & Great Aunt). Maybe the fucked up laughter will quiet down a bit! And yes, I have a sense of humor - when something is funny.
klwewf 3 years ago
I can't believe you said that. No one in my family has ever died of breast cancer. My grandmother lost one of hers, but she's fine now, unlike your grandmother and great aunt. They're in heaven and tit less. Next time you think to speak ill of my loved ones, don't.
zuneloader 3 years ago

A cancer diagnosis back at that time was almost always a death sentence. They have come so far in treatments now..too bad it was not Minnie's destiny to benefit from it.
But she lives on in her music and in the fans she touched as well as in her daughter Maya!

wth? what kind of commercial was that?!
there had to be a better way of encouraging folks to become more aware of their bodies back then. "she lost a breast, but saved the rest of her life."
it's unfortunate that she died though, especially since she believed that she had become healthier...
inspiredsister 3 years ago 8
The kind of commercial that was made in the seventies. The advancement of medicine had not reached our world back then. Minnie had strong faith and she spoke about a painful personal illness that she was told to keep a secret. Kudos to Minnie and her brave soul.
