Looks is pretty simple. There are tones of videos on youtube you how to use it.
I don't use color often for correction. Magic bullet is that simple and effective. However I have found some very helpful free tutorials off of the Apple website. What I use to do was watch the videos from all of the companies (ripple, lynda, etc) and that would give a pretty good idea of how to use the program.
That was great. I agree, the high contrast and grain work well with style of cinematography. Have you tried Red Giant's Magic Bullet Looks for color correction? it's an awesome plug-in and easy to use.
I'm often frustrated by noisy images in my own work, but on closer inspection, a lot of hollywood productions have tons of noisy shots.
