Bjj originated from Judo. However, due to the sport emphasis more emphasis is placed on standing in judo. Bjj focuses more on the ground fighting aspect.
@GribMurder You are mistaken. It's a common misconception due to Sport Judo and the rules that govern the techniques used to win. Ne waza is literally ground technique. We practice off of the back or dominant using chokes, joint locks, and escapes. Some instructors are heavily into the sport aspect and limit what students learn and practice. Others teach all techniques including striking which incorporates elbows, punches, kicks, and more. Judo is very broad when all technique is taught.
@GribMurder Unfortunately, it's hard to answer that. The Sensei and club environment usually dictates that. Some days we spend half the class practicing falls and techniques like sweeps and throws without completing the technique. You weren't totally incorrect in your assumption. I was given a gift certificate to attend 5 BJJ classes. I didn't go to the ground until the last class but the majority of work by students was ground. A lot of foot sweeps. Driving distance kept me from attending.
@GribMurder thats the misconception u havent see tourneys when they go to the ground they have a minute to submit vs five to fight for the sub who you think is faster getting subs a judo guy or a bjj guy . plus lets not talk pins and stand up which bjj has nill .... bjj is judo newaza look it up dont take my word for it u can search here in you tube judo newawa and then try to see who is emulating who
Are you a black belt at Judo? if so, come down to our Gym and we will find a white belt for you to test out the theory. Peace bud..It's all in the learning
@juicespirit i do BJJ, and i have to say that's probably the dumbest shit Ive heard in a while. while BJJ on average is better on the ground, and Judo on there feet. that's only because BJJ dedicates all there time to ground work. I'm pretty sure a judo black belt has trained on the ground enough to beat a white belt.
honestly i would say the opposite, good luck for a bjj black belt to throw a judo white belt. BJJ throws suck, and are watered down as hell.
Im a Boxer and i think all Styles can get the job done just not karate. But i've been looking at videos with karate and it hasn't never been doing good
judo covers stance grappling and a bit of ground grappling....bjj mostly covers ground...judo has proved to be one of the best martial arts in the world,so did bjj...the conclusion is that grappling is the best in any way of that word :)
@XChaosXSniperX Traditional judo, as created by Jigoru Kano, is perfectly suited for a real fight. Traditional judo includes not only tachiwaza (standing techniques) and newaza (grappling, submissions, chokes, strangles), but also atemiwaza (striking) -- though striking isn't taught until a judoka reaches black belt. As for its combat effectiveness, judo has been incorporated into MCMAP (US Marines), Krav Maga (Israeli Defense Forces) and Sambo (Russian military) for a reason.
With respect, take a look at UFC 1-4. I'm not a Gracie fanboy, but Royce Gracie pretty much showed exactly what happens when strikers don't know basic grappling in order to counter it. And that was back in the "wild days" - no weight categories, hardly any rules. About the only thing you couldn't do back then was eye-gouge or small joint manipulation, IIRC.
Judo is great. I have bounced and used it a lot. I have taken fellow bouncers to class and they also believe it's great for that type of work. Japanese police learn Judo. I am in the process of teaching a friend who is applying for Canadian police, so he has some kind of clue of how to defend himself and manipulate an opponent on his feet, NOT from his back.
i disagree. i do bjj aswell and they arent better than the other they just compliment each other. judo dominates standing, bjj dominates the ground. why not do both? there not better or worse.
@randomjudoguy101 You would be more complete if you do Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, or Judo and Boxing. One striking and one grappling, as it should be ;D
@randomjudoguy101 I agree 100%. I got introduced to BJJ through our criminal justice program at my college. I just recently began actively training again after a long pause. But all the schools I've been to have cross-trained Judo throws to compliment your BJJ ground game. I think they're a deadly combination when trained together.
@sonnych69 not really, atleast not modern judo. Modern judo is only relegated straight arm locks and choke holds, whereas bjj contains a plethora of armbars, shoulderlocks, leg locks, toe holds, ankle locks, chokes, etc. Plus the rules that govern the sports make practitioners develop skill sets; because groundwork is only relegated to 30 seconds in judo, there is less emphasis on the ground than in bjj.Judo focuses more on throws and takedowns than ground game. The two arts compliment eachother
@dksilentbobyou really need to research the subject more i have. all bjj submissions come from judo and if u belleve bjj has a plethora of armbars i doubt it jus because u put a twist in it doesnt make it bjj . its called self discovery meaning people who practice submissions have done it before. leglocks is easy to trans ie sambo . thats y bjj is teaching throws now cause bjj is incomplete judo is not bjj is going backwards while judo gets stronger all bjj subs have japaneese names tinkboutit
@sonnych69 I'm almost a brown belt in bjj. I train with guys who've done judo. I know what I'm talking about. Judo isn't the same as it was back when Kano Jigoro invented it. The Olympics pretty much limited the scope of judo so that it focuses more on throws rather than ground game. Bjj focuses more on the ground than on takedowns. Training in one or the other gives you a different set of skills. A bjj black belt tends to be better at submissions than a judo black belt. That's pretty much fact
@dksilentbob well i practice kosen judo which bjj emulates and everything in bjj thru purple is done in white yellow theres a difference in olympic judo and true kodokan judo i here the same arguement that judo is outdated peopledont have an idea how its practice in japan and true judo dojos name one sub that bjj has that judo dosent omoplata -udegarami leglock ashi garami ezeqiel choke Sodeguruma-jime triangle choke sankaujime and the list goes on gracie got beat by yoshida with basic choke
@sonnych69 well, you could have been more specific. when most people mention judo they're usually talking about Olympic judo. And Royce isn't that great compared to a lot of other black belts. He just happened to be the first guy to show the effectiveness of bjj to the entire world. As far as grappling goes, I mainly do bjj plus have a solid wrestling background plus a little judo and sambo to round out my skills, and many bjj schools these days teach that other stuff as a supplement
@dksilentbob Not completely true if your speaking of Olympic Judo then yes most of the focus is on the throw but freestyle Judo under AAU rules everything is points from subs to pins to take downs to position this modern Judo >Olympic is not Modern Judo and remember most advanced competing Judoka are crossed trained in BJJ or if competing in freestyle have a good Newaza base there are some vid here on you tube
@glock70 Well, thanks for clarifying. The point i'm trying to make is that a lot of these comments I read about this style versus that style are pretty fucking stupid. BJJ is better, no Judo is, Sambo, catch wrestling blahblahblah. I like grappling. I like fighting. At the end of the day, who the fuck cares what style it is as long as it gets the job done?
@dksilentbob True a lot of dumb comments on here but I think most of it comes from lack of knowledge I train what ever I can get my hands on I like to think my base is judo because that is were I am strongest but I cross train Jitz because I know my ground needed improvement> I train boxing & Karate but I still cross train in Kick boxing because I know it would improve my stand up ,Its about a open mind a lot guys on here don't have one no art is complete if there was there wouldn't be mma
@Junaamhier That's kind of dumb to say, If you train judo and utilize those skills you will be a very good bjj wrestler. There is a judo guy at my bjj academy and he does a sick throw were he knocks the wind out of his opponents. If you mix judo with bjj it makes you that much better. Discriminating against other styles is just stupid.
@Junaamhier no style is better it is how you use the style of fighting any style can beat any style i do wrestling bjj judo and boxing all the grappling styles help the others
@Junaamhier - Yeah nice one mate. I guess you don't do MMA or Judo. Why don't you enter the dutch judo open or the cage?? Oh thats right you just sit in your little BJJ club and like to think your the toughest man alive because whatever you do just must be the best. People like you are such try hards
@Junaamhier - Get some respect? Have you read your own comment? I said that (in your words) "because that was my opinion." So it should be lekker right? LOL. By the way your the 3rd bjj guy from Amsterdam I've heard talk down about judo. Why doesn't the couch at your club who seems to talk down about judo all the time go down to amstelveen and show Fedor Emelianenko how much superior bjj is than judo. @randomjudoguy101 I've only ever competed under the IJF, so idk if the USJA has different rules for throws like kata guruma. are they still 100% legal in their rules?
Not illegal; just require a pre-entry throw combination, most people put in a small entry technique action, it needs to be definate, then attack as usual.
@dfallout I hate the new rules about leg grabbing, I think it's bullsh*t.
As for the BJJ comment, I have trained both, both have their strong points. None is better, that's a stupid statement. it really depends how you use it. I do know that learning both is better then either one singled out.
@JBass2222 The new rules about leg grabbing are great, as far as competition is concerned: leg grabs require the least technique out of all of the throws, so this encourages competitors to improve their judo.
i was front row centre for that one poor kid that did the throw came off second best almost, he smashed his head worse than the guy being thrown, he didn't know where he was afterwards
haha yeahh i know man was worth it though got a bit of a concussion but it was well worth it:)i knew were i was i just couldnt stand without everything sorta...hyperreal lol:)

eg Kouchigari then leg grab is fine...???

@dfallout I know! My favorite throw was sukui nage! Oh well... I guess I'm just gonna have to settle for a modified tani otoshi.*sighs*

@dfallout well, this particualr example is still allowed. see the oppononent has a one sided grip.

@dfallout I hate the new rules about leg grabbing, I think it's bullsh*t.
As for the BJJ comment, I have trained both, both have their strong points. None is better, that's a stupid statement. it really depends how you use it. I do know that learning both is better then either one singled out.
As for the video, very nice throw.

@JBass2222 The new rules about leg grabbing are great, as far as competition is concerned: leg grabs require the least technique out of all of the throws, so this encourages competitors to improve their judo.

@ThatScot but limits the techniques available

@dfallout
yep.
I must admit that now it looks more elegant, like an uchi mata, harai, osoto, etc.
it was frustrating seeing so many wrestling moves in Judo competitions, just strong explosive guys grabbing a leg and picking people up.

You can't fucking lift some guy up off the ground for more then 2 seconds
