  • The Jewish people are intertwined with the Bible if there were no Jewish people, Judaism, Hebrew language Jewish culture, Jewish cuisine,Jewish music, Jewish contributions to society, Jewish history of 4000 years. When an atheist says that the Bible is a fairy-tale, then the Jewish people&everything about are also fairy-tales. Atheist beleive that Jewish history is flawed but what is their true history atheist? Also what about the 2000 year history of Christianity? Everyone else is beleivable.

  • There is another aspect of religion of the Bible than the Judaism/Christianity&excisted in various cultures into the 19th&20th centuryFirst in the Bible in Genesis, Adam thru Abraham&really to Moses Job in the book of Job lived centuries before Abraham but had the same God Cornelius in the book of Acts was neither Jew/Christian nor a pagan, heathen,or infidel but was "devout". This devout monotheism is older than Judaism's 4000 years& it was the first religion in all cultures in early historyFYI.

  • @RonSafreed Why do you keep posting these same, long-winded, grammar-poor, comments over and over again and again and again, on so many religion-related videos? (mine, others, etc.)??

  • Europeans&Orientals have 2 things in common, a high degree of atheism in both populations&a very low birthrate below replacement levels. Both groups are forcast to decrease drastically during this 21st century, especially the whites. Blacks&muslims are exploding&there is not much atheism amoung them&there looks like their is not going to be any mass conversions soon. Why atheist have no large families?Black Africa will be 25% Arabs 10%, other blacks&other muslims will add but whites only 8% by2060

  • John Wycliffe1330-1385 who translated the Bible from Latin to the early middle English in 1382 beleived that the Bible should be in the tongue as well as in the hands of the masses. In 1442 his remains were dug up&a trial was held condemming what he had done. His bones were burned to powder&dumped in a river. I read his lifestory&have the book. Over 1000 years the Bible was under lock&key&many clergy as well as all laity had no access. Evil people in high places were responsible for this thing.

  • The Bible has only been accessible to the common man less than 500 years. William Tyndale 1498-1542 was the first to mass publish the Bible for the masses using the printing press in 1525. He snuggled them to England from Belguim It cost a common man a week's wage He was a wanted man who was caught, tried&executed in Brussels. It took 10 months to handwrite a Bible Tyndale spoke 9 languages I read his lifestory&have the book For over 1000 years the Bible was under lock&key&many clergy no access.

  • Man has 3 parts body/soul/spirit. Man is in a fallen state aging/disease/death works in the body, man's soul is lost&man is spiritually dead. The difference between the soul&spirit is like am/fm in radio. The soul is the am frequency&the spirit is the fm frequency, however the spirit in man is dead so men cannot pick up what lies beyond the 4 dimentions of time/space This is where the Christian "born again' experience comes in, to revive the spirit in man.True Christians are spiritually alive.

  • Hmm somehow I doubt it is water in that bottle.

  • We love ya Hitch, best wishes that you defeat your cancer

  • I'd say he'd had a few gargles beforehand.

  • In the former USSR atheism/evolution was taught nearly 75 years. The Bible was a banned book&parents could'nt teach it to kids. Bibles were smuggled there.Within months of the fall of the USSR in 92 the Bible was reintroduced in Russian schools. A woman Olga Lutsenko was the main one&she was an atheist then. BTWshe is on youtube&I support her financially.I myself studied the USSR 30 years during the cold war era The former USSR was determined to wipe out religion worldwide with atheism.FYI..

  • @RonSafreed The church was reinstated at around '36, though...

  • @RonSafreed You say "atheism/evolution" those are not the same thing, at all. I admit that I am not an expert on the USSR, however, one thing I have to say on the subject in regard to your comment is that in such situations, and there are other examples, one reason religion is attacked is because those in power want to establish the state as religion. This would be a case of atheism used for an external purpose: the establishment of the state as the religion.

  • I've seen this whole discussion it was great.

  • it sux that he dying i just found him

  • @human899 Where the fuck have you been for all these years? ;)

  • I don't think Hitchens took the question seriously. Instead of answer it he asks "do you think love comes from Mt. Sainai..." then he goes off about god telling you to blow yourself up and such.

He didn't seem to address the question at all.

  • @Mujangga

I don't think you've heard it intently. Hitchens absolutely answered it with asseveration and humor.

  • @jefreen12 No he didn't, he said we love DOESN'T come from but where it does. "Asseveration and humor", is that why you follow him, not for the content of his ideas but for the visceral, instinctual tingling in your gut when he makes fun of people or denounces others like a religious zealot?

  • @Mujangga On your point of love, he said: "Love can be felt without any reference to these invocations"--such as Mount Sinai, Preaching of hell, or a supposed prophet's driveling invitations to follow, and so on.He makes fun of people who are impostures and deserve mockery. I understand that he might have offended your feelings by mocking at your so called beloved "people and others,"but these people and others" are not everyone's pet like yours.Sorry!

  • @jefreen12 What the fuck are you talking about? "People and others" are my pets? What the fuck does that mean? Why are you so angry? Is it because I doubted your priest? Is it because you enjoy the feeling of power when Hitch gives you an enemy but he is untouchable and perfect like a god?

"Love can be felt without any reference to invocation..." That still doesn't answer the question does it? Where does it COME from?

By the way "mock" is transitive so no preposition and he didn't mock me.

  • @Mujangga

Your puerile reply and filthy use of language proves the point that you don't have the capacity to understand the meaning of love. It's a utter waste of time to argue with the idiot like you!

  • @jefreen12 Do you realize that declaring something to be "filthy" as proof of anything in order to save face by avoiding a valid point is a cop out and that you have lost the argument and that Hitch STILL didn't explain where love comes from?

You do realize that ignoring the subject and resorting to name calling makes you come off like a child and not like an intelligent adult...? You do know that right?

Way to prove me wrong genius!

  • @Mujangga You're not real bright

  • @Mujangga I agree that he goes a bit off concerning dogma but he certainly answers the question. Where would the love come from, which would battle such hate-- right? From ourselves. It is within our own human capacity. Are you looking for a more biological answer? The origins of altruism perhaps?

The view is simple. We are the creators, the best ones that we're aware of. We are crafting both the hate and the love felt-- the latter being "fragile and inconsistent", perhaps. Are we clear now?

  • Brilliant.

  • hes always drunk or tipsy man all da time lol

  • I find that really offensive *valley girl head wag* haha

  • Hitchens is laughing. *Mind blown*

  • ... Why is it all old people?

  • @Nerd0042 because young people are idiots? just a guess : )

  • @MrTruthAddict lol, Geez thanks. I'm 15. I'm sure I wasn't an idiot when I went to see Christopher Hitchens debate Tony Blair, for example. We're not all dumb you know.

  • @MrTruthAddict I don't think so. Atheism has doubled in those who are 19-25 years old in the last decade. I myself, am 15 years old and started absorbing everything Hitch when I was 13.

  • @Nerd0042 Awesome, that's good to hear

  • "Up with this will not put" brilliant!

  • can someone explain the buddist joke? i didnt get it

  • If you tell people that God has to chose them in order to know Him. It makes those that are not chosen feel unloved. Therefore, a construct is created where love is an invention instead of a revelation. If you tell people one day the whole world will see God in his glory, you create a mystery. And relieve them of their hidden misery.

  • hitchens is cool because he is capable.

  • "Up with this we will not put!" Good stuff.

  • @ashleylovesdaddy originally said by winston churchill :-)

  • Genetic Fallacy.

  • im confused. doesn't seem like he's answering the question the man asked...

    i'll have to re-listen.

  • @Ev3rFl0w There have definitely been times when he does fail to answer the question being asked him, but this is not one of them, imo. I think this was very succinctly put, even for the master of vernacular that Hitch is. And as the high-ranked commenter noted 11 months ago, he seems in a particularly light-hearted mood. One can't help but wonder if he's consumed more or less than his usual nightly allotment of liquid (and entirely non-supernatural) spirits.

  • He's quite brilliant and he knows it

  • 4:25 "The two great emancipators." pause at 4:27 lol

great speech though, Hitchens' always are

  • @AfroDude50 He's counting himself there as well, and rightly so.

  • You know that's vodka in his water bottle.

  • Forgive me if I belabour the point here, but in this discussion of love, Hitchens possesses this overwhelming, smouldering sensuality.

Why? His eloquence, his pose and poise at the podium, the loose tendrils of golden hair, the unbuttoned shirt, and his humour -- while standing in front of a wall of books and discussing love -- it's all just irresistible. And then there's his golden voice...

Smitten am I! (Particularly around 3:44 and 4:50)

  • @Archivist82 Oh holy crap yes. He is a sexy, sexy beast and I am head over heels for him. And I think we're hardly alone:)

  • @magicpony9

"Makes me feel all moist and husky" as he says at 3:25.

We'll all have to learn to share him ;)

    *girlish giggle*

  • The bible was written by numerous authors anyway, I don't understand what you mean by saying it was "manipulated", that implies that bible was written by a "god" and that clearly was not the case.

  • so what does this have to do with origin of love for real? like the plato thing..

  • come again?

  • Probably the best bit from this video. Love is in the air..

  • my god this guy is good at public speaking.

Clear, funny, well paced, eloquent yet understandable, well informed with quotes and facts.

    a modern day Cicero

  • Guys, no joke, my balls really itch. I'm not sure if it's because I shaved them, or if it's because my sister is, right this second, tickling them with a feather.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, i have not laughed so hard in a good few hours, thanks

  • @leave12 brilliant post.

  • i was a fundamentalist (no longer) & agree 100% with the notion 'take the cool aid now,' because if you read the text to a literal context, you have to believe that relationship with your fellow man is seriously skewed or damaged due to 'sin'; the end of the world is tomorrow & life on earth equates to a devised hell on earth. Sinister trap is a kind description. As an atheist now it is nice to have things in my life i love without prejudice, hypocrisy or fear (& i love your work).. thank you

  • when he says "2 great emancipators" he holds up three fingers.... tee hee

  • Hitchens is a wise, decent human being

  • Hitchens in a romantic mood --- lovely!

    =-x

    :-)

  • 'moist and husky'...lol...Hitchens was especially upbeat in this video; it sounds like it was a great talk...thanks for uploading...

  • Great!!!

  • i'm falling in love with hitchens all over again...

  • i think this is the best mood i've ever seen Hitchens in :) nice to see him chat and joke around a bit

not that i don't love him when he's being a bad ass but good to see he can also chill

  • :-)

  • @dosfooll

Maybe its vodka in his water bottle ;)

  • @dosfooll i'm thinking its because the man posted good questions!

  • @dosfooll Agreed.

  • @dosfooll probably cause the venue was relaxed.. No hitchslapin!

  • Do not ignorantly associate anything else with the term atheism other than a lack of belief in god. That is all it is. It should define someone in the same way as being a Christian makes them not a Muslim.

And why would you think that threatening people who are atheists with the thought of hell would do anything at all to scare them? Why would someone be afraid of something that doesn't exist?

  • LMAO

  • Only if you get through me first.

  • Ah come on, admit it, you just don't like him because he used intellect, logic and reason. All those big words and concepts frighten you don't they. Coward!

  • It's difficult to say that any of Hitchens' speeches is better than the others, but I'd put this one close to the top. :)

    Fav'd.

  • Agreed. He packs quite a punch here.

  • Agreed. Hitchens seems to have a slight buzz on, and that's when he's at his best.

  • @dewonthegrass Hear hear. Funny, cogent, essentially flawless. A real joy to listen to.

  • "You might as well take the cool-aid right there."

    Holy shit, fucking awesome.

  • haha, textjoy, me too...

last time I saw you, we just split in two, you was lookin at me, I was lookin at you and in a way so familar I could not recognize you had blood in your face I had blood in my eyes but I could tell by your expression that the pay down in your soul was the same as the one down in mine

  • Oh how disappointing, I thought I was going to get to hear him sing the song from Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

  • @texjoy86 yea me to but instead this old drunk fart talking shit
