  • I think I heard that the parlor car Marian #88 was made from one of those gondolas.

  • My dad was here some time in the early 1960s when he was a little kid. Then when I was a little kid, he and I (as well as the rest of my immediate family) went there two summers in a row! :)

  • love that pennsy 3 chime on 1223

  • i also find it intersting that they didnt use the airrocker on the bell

  • @david245611 The 1223 has an air clapper, not an air rocker. But it is interresting they didnt use the clapper.

  • i find it cool that theres in this vid!

  • what happened to the old wooden water tower?

  • Wow! That is all I can say. Its amazing!

  • Great footage! Looks very different from today! where did the steel coaches and the open air car go?

  • Wow this is pretty cool

  • Its amazing how much has changed i live a couple miles from the station and when you look at this and then now its breath taking

  • 1:38 to 1:41 XO ouch... i'd hate to see the track and the wheels after that...

  • The water tower is now located on the former Blue Mountain & Reading railroad at South Hamburg, PA.

    Len.

  • No it isn't. That water tank was in South Hamburg before they replaced this one in Strasburg

  • Sir ,

I was told by Mr. Muller him self where he got the water tower from. He told me the water tower came from Wanamaker Kempton & Southern who bought it off Strasburg Railroad for when they replaced it with a larger one.

    Len.

  • Sounds like she needs to be quartered, I believe..

  • Big Jim, they do have an open car.

  • @RobDavisUnadorned It's a regular car with big spaces (where the windows would be). I think Big Jim meant was the flatbed open air cars.

  • I wish they still had an open air car - I would ride it every time I went!

  • I love the 1223 and 7002, but if strasburg ever leases another RRMoPA engine again, let it be a different one

  • i wish the camelback was back in operation

  • The railroad loved 1223, but it needed a lengthy and expensive complete boiler overhaul, and the Railroad Museum at the time wouldn't give them any more than a 1-year lease. Not quite worth the trouble, so indoors it sits. I'd love to see it too.

As for 7002, great looking engine, but apparently it was an absolute maintenance nightmare. I heard stories that they spent twice as much time under the engine as they did using it.

  • Great Video!! However, it must have been taken in 1965 or 1966 as the SRC did not get a lease from Penn Central on 1223 or restore her to operating condition until 1965 (see the 2nd edition of The Road to Paradise Book for more information). In 1961, only 0-6-0 No. 31 (CN 7312)was operable. I rode 1223 many times, espeically when she doubleheaded with 7002 on the main. Miss seeing them in steam, but at least they have been preserved properly across the street at the RR Museum of PA.

  • Classic. The sound quality is excellent!

  • What a great video. I like how they had to stop on the return trip at carpenters because of the crossing. What great footage

  • There is a picnic area at Carpenters. Also a passing track. When they are running 2 trains during the peak season this is where they meet.

Now this has been the case since I have been going there as an adult since the late 70's. I am not 100% sure if this was the case in the 60's The picnic area has benn there a while.

  • Great footage!

  • Wow I've never seen footage of 1223 with the "Strasburg" lettering on the cab. And until now, I never knew the original water tank was wooden! 5*s

  • it's actually sad that they did not keep the metal coaches

  • WOW

I NEVER thought to see 1223 operational.

I wish some of the footage could have been more than looking out the window but AWESOME footage.

  • why is it moving fowards? shouldn't they pull it tender first just like they mostly do?

  • actually they only pull it tender first while leaving the station and Locomotive first on the return trip.

  • I took my kids there last year. Not to mention I was there in the 70's when I was a kid. It has changed alot.

  • Nice seeing the area minus all the modern day tourist traps. Excellent video.

  • If you want to ride a gondola, you can go to the WK&S, Kempton, PA. They have it on the train most of the time.

  • Incredible footage. Never thought I'd see 1223's bell being hand rung...

  • The gondola was, and is to me, still cool. Awsome, awsome, awsome.

  • I wish they they still used the gondola too.

  • Too bad they don't have the gondola on the trains anymore... that was a nice car. Amazing footage.

  • Great Footage!

  • Priceless! It's amazing how much the railroad has changed over the past 45 years.

  • B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L footage! Not to mention rare!
