My dad was here some time in the early 1960s when he was a little kid. Then when I was a little kid, he and I (as well as the rest of my immediate family) went there two summers in a row! :)
I was told by Mr. Muller him self where he got the water tower from. He told me the water tower came from Wanamaker Kempton & Southern who bought it off Strasburg Railroad for when they replaced it with a larger one.
The railroad loved 1223, but it needed a lengthy and expensive complete boiler overhaul, and the Railroad Museum at the time wouldn't give them any more than a 1-year lease. Not quite worth the trouble, so indoors it sits. I'd love to see it too.
As for 7002, great looking engine, but apparently it was an absolute maintenance nightmare. I heard stories that they spent twice as much time under the engine as they did using it.
Great Video!! However, it must have been taken in 1965 or 1966 as the SRC did not get a lease from Penn Central on 1223 or restore her to operating condition until 1965 (see the 2nd edition of The Road to Paradise Book for more information). In 1961, only 0-6-0 No. 31 (CN 7312)was operable. I rode 1223 many times, espeically when she doubleheaded with 7002 on the main. Miss seeing them in steam, but at least they have been preserved properly across the street at the RR Museum of PA.
There is a picnic area at Carpenters. Also a passing track. When they are running 2 trains during the peak season this is where they meet.
Now this has been the case since I have been going there as an adult since the late 70's. I am not 100% sure if this was the case in the 60's The picnic area has benn there a while.
I think I heard that the parlor car Marian #88 was made from one of those gondolas.

The water tower is now located on the former Blue Mountain & Reading railroad at South Hamburg, PA.

No it isn't. That water tank was in South Hamburg before they replaced this one in Strasburg

Big Jim, they do have an open car.
RobDavisUnadorned 2 years ago
@RobDavisUnadorned It's a regular car with big spaces (where the windows would be). I think Big Jim meant was the flatbed open air cars.
cvspad 7 months ago
I wish they still had an open air car - I would ride it every time I went!

I love the 1223 and 7002, but if strasburg ever leases another RRMoPA engine again, let it be a different one

Wow I've never seen footage of 1223 with the "Strasburg" lettering on the cab. And until now, I never knew the original water tank was wooden! 5*s

it's actually sad that they did not keep the metal coaches

WOW
I NEVER thought to see 1223 operational.
I wish some of the footage could have been more than looking out the window but AWESOME footage.
KZ1993 3 years ago
why is it moving fowards? shouldn't they pull it tender first just like they mostly do?
Strasburg1991 3 years ago
actually they only pull it tender first while leaving the station and Locomotive first on the return trip.

If you want to ride a gondola, you can go to the WK&S, Kempton, PA. They have it on the train most of the time.

Incredible footage. Never thought I'd see 1223's bell being hand rung...

The gondola was, and is to me, still cool. Awsome, awsome, awsome.
