When I was in Florida this last spring, we were able to go out kayaking on our own and see the wild dolphins and manatees. It was absolutely incredible. They came up and nudged the kayaks and let us touch them. It's so much more fulfilling to see them in their natural habitat than caged up in a tank at Sea World. I just can't understand the heartless business demons' ability to care more about lining their pockets than pause to consider the welfare of wild animals.

Amazing. These are giants, but they are so gentle and smooth Ppl have to be so much more careful while boating in their territory. It takes long times for them to repopulate so most are in captivityn

Ah, the manatees. They don't eat animals, and animals don't eat them. They have no evolutionary reason to be capable of hostility. As such, it's only natural that they'd be friends to every other species.

Perhaps the reason that we find them so adorable is the same; perhaps we've evolved with an ancient intuitive understanding of what things are tasty and what things will eat us, and when we look at a manatee, we understand that it won't hurt us, nor have we anything to gain by hurting it.

if you guys dont know already. pollution is not the only thing that is killing manatees. in florida, power boats hit manatees without knowing and kills them. a hit from a propeller is lethal. so not only blame pollution but also people who are careless and run over manatees.

You can swim with manatees anywhere. Go to an Indian River in the summer they are everywhere. It's illegal to touch or disturb them. You can also swim with them in Warm Springs, where the water is clear. I've swam with Manatees many times and it's sad that I've never seen one without a Birth scar

I've just came back of Genua (Italy) and they are having 2 manatees at their aquarium.

The animals are in bad conditions!

Skinny and typical cage behaviour.

1 just keep swimming around & around and the other 1 didn't swim normally but just kept making twirls in the water.

It was awfull to watch and made me cry.

@Krentenbolletjes Went to the aquarium last week, now they seem to be much more healty, theyr behavior was a lot similar to the ones in the wild, they also played together. They still are a bit skinny but the guide told me that in the last couple of months they began feeding more and gaining weight, so they hope they'll be fine soon. I don't like wild animals being kept in captivity but the ones in Genua aren't born in the wilderness, I don't know if they could survive if they were released.
