Hi, secretfreq23: For better or worse, the ABDS won't really affect jobs (in fact the NCSU Libraries is going to have real challenges staffing a whole new library with the resources we have). However, it will allow us to use money that would have been used constructing and heating/cooling book shelves on great study rooms and technology for students instead.
I'm looking forward to trying out this system. I like that they addressed the browsing problem by creating a better "virtual book shelf". And, of course, I think use of robots in any application (warranted or gratuitous) should be encouraged and enjoyed!
My Dad, Tom Caldwell of Atlas Engineering, is working on this job, and he told me about the book delivery system. I think that this is an amazing idea and will work well.

Great. Less jobs for librarians and work-study positions.
