  • doesn't make sense!

  • I wish it was easier to do it with backgrounds that weren't solid. In my case, a shower curtain with happy faces on it.

  • Sorry, but the result looks as if the trainee has cut the image with scissors. Sure - like on magazines, but no good job at all.

    Thumbs down.

  • This is NOT how professionals do this--look at all the hair that was missed, including the small strands at the top. This guy does not give professional advice and is obviously not a professional. Ever heard of masking?

  • @MrDarcyzPP - Is that a joke? You sir are ignorant.

Mac = Work Windows = Games

  • you and ijustine are?? what??

  • @MrDarcyzPP - nearly all of proffesional image/video editing companies use macs, just because you can't afford one it doesn't mean that they're bad.

  • @SomeTechHelp Yes mac users are so superior

  • @MrDarcyzPP Wow! What planet do you live on?

  • nicee!!

  • tahts ijustine!!

  • well done!

  • Awesome

  • even better if you use the channel's palett to do your selection's

  • -.-" it's MUCH BETTER if you will use the EXTRACTION tool....

  • Which one is the extraction tool?, I'd really like to know.

  • basic and pooly done...

  • Very lazily and very poorly done.

  • Seriously.... erasing the hair?

  • instead of EXPAND and FEATHER at 3:20 it's better to use REFINE EDGE.

You can expand and tweak the selection.

then hit invert selection, copy to new layer

  • i love it! (:

  • Really good, trying to learn everything.

  • CLICK THE THUMBS UP BUTTON (OVER THERE ------->) IF YOU LOVE iJUSTINE AND THESE TUTORIALS!!!

    :L lol.

  • I hate her and I have given you an thumb down.she is just an apple freak.she's advertising apple.screw her and you all her fans.she is getting lots of money from youtube because she is a partener.and she gets money from apple too!

  • dude magic wand tools is for nubs and rushers

  • magic wand tool is exelent tool, just not for this selection

  • iJustine! iloveher :D

  • iJustine

  • when i do this some of the backround colours are the same colour as my skin/hair colour then when i hold alt and click my hair/face the backround comes back! help?

  • iJustine!

  • or you go get sony vegas 8.0 and use chroma keyer and take a sample of the blue and there ya go.

  • that was helpfull

  • ..who?

  • from afar i thought it was ashlee simpson..haha silly me....LOL

  • its iJ!!

  • haha its a Justine :D

  • you should have used color select for this.....i do it all the time for that stuff and you dont have to erase those extras.

  • OMG!!!! IJustine is sooo cool!!!!!

  • lol same intro music as hotforwords -.-

  • It's an apple-song.. So Its not stolen from her

  • it's not copyrighted. it's included within Apple iMovie and Soundbooth and it's under the Free User License. Why else do you think Apple would include it in their software if you weren't allowed to use it?

  • i knew the music sounded familiar! thanks for pointing that out.

  • is tthat justine OMG <3

  • can you help me do a logo ? like a video one ?

  • selecting hair is one of the harder techniques in PS and there are many ways to do it.

However, in this tutorial you're showing us how to select a few strands of hair, just to eraze them later when they didn't come out perfectly... That's not very good. I suggest you do a tutorial about the Alpha method for selecting hair

  • nice job...very interessting....hope to see more of your Videos

  • thank you !! anyone can use a magic tool but now you have given me info on something new!

  • I also looked at this video and i though, wtf is that justine, and i wuz like oh yh

  • lol@ u funny guy!

  • OMG Justine u=your everywhere

  • she's hot!

  • i'D bust a nut in her eye.

  • SO stupid... first you say don't use the magic tool because the hair has blue in it, than even though you use color range you still have to erase the hair..!!!

  • retard its more easy fuking faggot

  • yeah you're right. this tutorial sucks

  • great stuff, thanks Howard!

  • It's iJusine ! ;)

  • Cool tutorial, thanks! Abd the gal is pretty :D

  • i like that pic

  • thx man..i don't have photoshop, but i'd be damn happy if i had it and get this tips^^

  • omg its ijustine

  • you explain very well

  • Wouldn't have been easier to just fill in her hair where there were a few gaps, instead of erasing?

  • 4* for all good

  • Turn off contiguous to fix the magic wand problem.

  • whether thats true or not the girl in the picture is pretty

  • LOL..... Where in Canada have you been?!!?

  • You are amazing

  • not using the mw tool, but still taking shortcuts. why? don't do dope, but ciggarettes are okay??

  • thank you I enjoyed it

  • You deleted the complicated hair area at the end so... why wasnt this possible with the magic wand?

  • Nice method, thanks for the tutorial> To make it easier to work with, make sure your chromakey is evenly lit, no shadows with the subject at least 6 feet from the backdrop

  • the funny thing is .....i only clicked this video because the video thumb looked like Justine i was like "i know those lips ! sure enough it was her lol awesome. good tut also

  • good vid MAN

  • OMG, it's Justine!

  • she's hott

  • i like to use the extraction tool myself

  • Comment removed

  • What about the blue colourcast on the hair and face?

  • Not a bad method, but not going far enough. Fair comment about the blue colour cast, but it's not too severe so easy enough to remove with a Colour Balance adjustment layer working on the blues.

One criticism to be levelled at a LOT of tuts is the use of destructive tools on original layers. That's what adjustment layers and masks are for. Drives me mad :)

  • this doesnt work if i have a background..like a bedroom, and i want to delete it?

    any suggestionS?

  • You may find it useful to use the Extract tool, if you're dealing with a hairy or furry subject, or use vector paths and convert to selection. Paths take a bit of work, but you can get nearly flawless selections as long as you're dealing with smooth objects in a sharp picture. You can also use Quick Mask mode to paint in a mask of the foreground, then convert back to normal mode.

If you have a complex background you may need to use a combination of methods to get the most accurate selection.

  • To all of you who have criticised this FREE tutorial perhaps you would be kind enough to post your own links to a better way of doing things. Thanks to Howard ive learnt a hell of a lot. Keep up the good work. Cheers

  • Use the background eraser tool. This tut's a bit sketchy.

  • ijustine is baggin

  • i pray you meant bangin'

  • how come you spend two minutes explaining why we should not use the magic wand because it didnt select all the blue , then u spend the rest of the time for color range selecting it , but when u see its too hard you just delete the hair .

  • IJUSTINE!!!!

  • I wouldn't use the wand either, but I think it's funny that you you say not to you it because it'll leave some blue in the hair... then you get the same result the other way, and still have to just delete that area hair. You never really proved why one should not just still use the wand... perhaps the next tutorial.

  • You should've used masks instead of direct deletion. :) Anyway, a good tutorial for a beginner. :)

  • Hey! Thats iJustine! =]

  • What's the song in the beginning?

  • It's the intro to "Hotforwords" :)

  • I have a question please. Is there a History tab (in CS4) or something like in CS3 in the right, so I can undo the things that I don't like? Because I am Reverting all the time. Thanks :)

and sorry for my bad language :P
