"O mein Papa" is a German song, as related by a young woman remembering her beloved, once-famous clown father. It was written by Swiss composer Paul Burkhard in 1939 for a musical called Der Schwarze Hecht (~The Black Pike), reproduced in 1950 as Feuerwerk (Fireworks) to a libretto by Erik Charell, Jürg Amstein, and Robert Gilbert.
A dedication...to the greatest man I have ever met on earth...my adorable father...he was the greatest...he loved me with all tenure and dedication...he was a great example to me and to whoever he met...he showed me to have hope and faith in mankind...even in the moments that we live today...he was the person we all like to have and to meet...his son JEP San José, Costa Rica
Connie Francis singing in German. song was originaly form a Swiss play, "Festival" sung in Swiss German. The confusion is because Eddie Fisher, who is Jewish recorded it then Connie later recorded it in Yiddish...Because it was such a huge hit with Catskill audiences, every Jewish artist sang it & it became a "Jewish " song...I have seen this song as being declared an Italian song, probalby because of the trumpet solo in the Eddie fisher version.. it is a wonderful song in any language.
Thank you for this video. I used to sit on my Daddy's knee listening to this by Eddie Calvert. My first wife was Swedish, but sadly she is now gone. Brought back many memories. Thank YOu
@RULLIRENDO It was originally in Yiddish, but it's been translated into Neapolitan. Jim Nabors sang that version on an episode of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., believe it or not.
