  • The tornado was connected to a moving gantry at the top of the stage and a moving, wheeled vehicle across the floor at the bottom. Buddy Gillespie did an excellent job using muslin to make it with. The wind machines were pointed in the correct direction and became stronger as the tornado got closer. It was a long tube of muslin, about as wide as a person. Small holes filtered real dust piped through the muslin tube. When a tornado is "roping out" as the movement depicts, it's almost over.

  • Would it be against the law to use this as projection during the tornado scene for a small town wizard of oz production that I'm doing?

  • @phantasm091 no thats y its kinda unrealistic cuz it moves so fast lol thats like 100miles perhour then in stops all the sudden and 0 mph then it shoots up again lol

  • did you guys know they used a nylon sock to make the "tornado" look real? i thought that was pretty cool..

  • @DumpsteroJunk yeah i know. i saw some of the raw footage of it and it was pretty cool.

  • I saw the first of many twisters on Palm Sunday 1965 form and touch down. North of Knox indiana, at near dusk. It was back-lit by the setting sun shining thru clear sky in the distance. It had rained just before and stopped, so initially it kicked up no filth. This white-looking thing did move like this video. Clear as day. That's what stayed with me always. The top half marching along maybe 30mph, and the bottom end just snarling any old way, even backward! This film in 1939 is excellent!

  • @phantasm091 They can sweep back and forth at the bottom, but usually not at the speed in this old film of an imitation of a tornado. It looks like a sped up film with the way they did this tornado scene. There is a video of the 1981 cordell oklahoma tornado that has the bottom suddenly move with this type of swinging motion. Someone most have witnessed something like this one to come up with the idea for the motion of the tornado in this film which was made in 1939.

  • tornadoes in the reality will actully move as this one did.....back in and forth like that and at that speed too....called a sidewinder what i call them. zigzagger

  • This combined with the opening that MGM cut out are great tornado vids for the time and for today also. 5 star for being classic also.

  • is not a Cyclone. is a tornado!

  • @TstormSardiniaTeam cyclone is a twister dumbass

  • @TstormSardiniaTeam Isn't a cyclone part of a tornado?

  • @binturong1000 but why toranado kept moving and moving? it takes longer toranado used to scare me my job to make sure there s no such thing toranado at 3;00 and between 6;45 my mom is not watching juarssic park

  • This is really good stuff for the 30's!! That tornado always scared me. The sound of it sent chills down my spine.

  • AWESOME!

  • Even if the movement is a bit off, this is still one of the most inventive, brilliant and bloody chilling SFX ever accomplished without CGI!

  • Thanks for posting! Not a big fan of OZ but this is the best part of the movie for me. 32 years ago when I first saw this I was in horror.

  • Got to love the rainwrap on that twister.

  • this has to be the campiest sfx in history of man,

  • @Argocity2006 its damn good. better than that shit digital crap today.

  • Argocity2006@ra86226 not really! I rather see digital then this piece of poor SFX crap

  • @Argocity2006 but it was made in 1939...what's the excuse for bad effects today?

  • Argocity200@ra86226 . It doesn't matter what year it was made in,the sxf is shit compare to the twister in the movie twister. It looks like a panty hose on a top.

i really like the SFX today because people know how to do it right (unlike the horrible muppet wizard of of oz cyclone...(cringe),Your just old fashion to accept the new technology of the new millennium.but that's your problem

  • @Argocity2006 watch out! the twister cant see you

  • Argocity200@ra86226 . It doesn't matter what year it was made in,the sxf is shit compare to the twister in the movie twister. It looks like a panty hose on a top.

  • @Argocity2006 Why don't you keep your negative comments to yourself. You should't have watched the video if you didn't approve of it. Go watch some Sailor Moon.

  • But why the scene was not in the Gale Family's farm?

  • It was projected behind the set of the Gale farm. This particular part from about :30 and on was used during the scene where Dorothy is trying to get into the front door of the house and the screen door blows away.

  • Actually, where did you find this?

  • Its on the 2nd dvd on the 2005 release.

  • I found this too in the first DVD release without sounds and it's all black and white. Even the one that's one in my uploads have it too!

  • Is this from the 1939 film? Is this really the projection for the twister scene? I really don't believe that this is it!

  • This is it! You have the other great one on your uploads! They had to delete that from the movie because they felt it was too scary for children the see the house engulfed by the tornado.

  • The effect is relatively simple though. It's simple a tube of muslin, anchored at the top and bottom of the studio, moved around on a track. With lots of dust and effects it's quite convincing.

  • this footage was also used in Cabin in the Sky and High Barbaree.

  • WOAH! JUMPING JEEPERS!

  • @catherinecartoons1 i m not doing anything the twister or cyclone used to scare me

  • Lol very nice!

  • HOLY CRAP

  • That is one realistic tornado.

  • I KNOW! Most realistic to date...

  • Especially for the '30s. Too bad Thunderbolt sirens didn't exist yet. They would have made it even better.
